  • My basic set of tools for doing boat repairs. There's always more in the pile but I never leave the workshop without these.

I like your use of leather straps and pockets for your tool tote. It keeps tools visible and quickly in reach.
Your getup is easily acceptable for lots of jobs.
    Thanks for sharing.

Yes people, wooden is too lively a term to describe my delivery in this vid but I'm doing my best to loosen up. The camera is rather cold company in the shop.

Nice earring. Steal it from the wife?

I had an old boat builder tell me you can spot an amateur when they pull out a level. Great video. Thanks

If it's on the hard you can use a declivity stick. At least, that's how I was taught 🤷‍♂️

Just found your videos. Great job. How do you clean your tools? The job of keeping the rust off the tools. Your tools look very clean. Keep up the good work.

I use some steel wool or a scotchbrite pad and whatever oil is close at hand. Nothing special.

My home shop mentality is much different than when I'm at the boat shop. My boss doesn't seem to want to have faith in anyone so I don't make suggestions, but I think his boat bag is woefully understocked. At the boat shop, I personally have a decently stocked tool cart. I don't do dockside repair. My home shop's tool kits are all cart contained or box contained. I really should make a wood working "Go-bag" but I already have a full mechanics compliment that rides in my truck. Man, I really need to keep up with your videos!
By the way, if you ever need another narrow brush like that, I recommend a drafting brush. to make the bristles stiffer (If needed) Sandwich them between two boards and saw them on a sharp bandsaw/scrollsaw. Works pretty well. Though I've never used a brush like that on boats, I have used them around the shop on occasion

Captain Ahab the narrow brush isn't for cleanup, it's for painting the seam between planks on a carvel planked boat.

Nomad Boatbuilding oh! Huh. I'd need to see that. Not sure if they do the same at my job, I've never seen it.

Captain Ahab pretty much just on larger craft.

I think the biggest we have might be 30 ft. I don't know. I was priming the "Chesterfield". It's still lumpy. My boss hates it. But the owner didn't want to pay to fix it perfectly. He just wants a canoe to knock around in.

Captain Ahab well that is the way with customers. They don't all want pretty. They just don't want leaky.

great stuff. I am a wannabe boat builder ex-handyman and have most of those tools. The seam brush is interesting. I am assuming you take caulking irons only when you need them? I saw what looked or sounded like your reefing hook for seams. Very cool stuff

The caulking irons as you suspect only come out when specifically needed. The reefing iron, however gets used for all manner of activities. I mostly make use of a very small one which you may see in my caulking video. the proper one doesn't come out to often for me. If you have the tools, you don't have too many excuses to not start building. Best to pick a simple design and get over the hump.

Hi, Very good video! Do you dress up the edge of the scrapper differently when scraping the epoxy (if yes please share!! :-) ) ? Do you use the dedicated burnisher? Many thanks!

misiumalowany I use the same sharpening procedure as with any cabinet card scraper but due to the hardness of the spring steel, in the former saw blade, it will only take a very small hook. This is to your advantage because epoxy will easily clog up a larger hook. I use a high carbon rod burnisher made by Lee Valley Tools. Perhaps I'll do a video on making and sharpening one of these scrapers.
