David Bowie summed up this song as "a sensitive young girl's reaction to the media". This song is about the alienation caused by the media. The lyric "wonder if he'll ever know he's in the best selling show" sounds brilliant in our times of Facebook, Twitter, TH-cam and so on. Yeah, this man was a prophet !
Or it's about the fact that the Watchers of Mars, are inside each one of us. They have been called angles, demons and vampires. All of these descriptions work.
I do not know why, but this song reminds me of me, well ... maybe it's the fact that I have Mousy hair, but in a way, I fit into a situation similar to that of the girl mentioned in the song
i have a weird tradition of playing this song every time i’m on a flight and so far i’ve only timed it perfectly once to the second we got off ground and when David says sailors and it was really cool, not that anyone cares but whatever
I think it's amazing actually ! I had the same things with a different song. Whenever i entered the tunnel of a highway i used a lot, i would put the song "Obstacles" and when i got out of the highhway, i just dived into the light at the moment the song got more intense and dreamy. I did it for one year.
That's a nice little tradition to have for yourself. I mean that sincerely. Everyone perceives the world in their own unique way and it's always interesting to find out about a person's idiosyncrasies that would otherwise never be mentioned. They give life its flavour. All the best, Adrian. Keep up your traditions.
my parents were lucky enough to be able to see him in concert. He was, as my father put it, "extremely theatrical, to the point some people were a bit annoyed 'cause they expected something more traditional from a live performance". Even in the rock'n'roll scene he was the rebel :°D such an amazing artist
Exis Rodriugez, I feel for you, I'm presuming you are quite young? I'm 55 now and I feel so fortunate to have been born when I was, I've lived through the greatest time for top class bands. 1, David Bowie, 2, Queen, 3, Bob Dylan, 4, Blondie etc etc, I could name dozens, I also had the privilege of seeing all these bands live several times, I saw David Bowie play live 7 times, I can not think of any modern popular bands that I want to see. ACDC is my next one in June, if it's not cancelled.
agstone Yorkstone Yeah I'm 23, kinda young. Sir that's awesome! Did you see Queen live? I would have kill for that :( I was born the year after Freddie's dead so yeah... It's sad being young.
My mom and dad bonded over this song. One of the only things they had common was this song. My dad is an amateur astronomer and my mom is a amateur astrologer. I never had a good relationship with any of them. Dad left when I was a kid and my mom was abusive. Reunited with dad when I was older but it isn't the same. I've cut the contact with my mom and I barely have contact with dad. I usually don't listen to this song. It isn't bad, i just didn't want to listen to anything they liked. But today I just decided to do it, cause I like the song. It brings so much emotions to me, so much baggage that I've hidden. But it doesn't make me sad, I feel like this song is somewhat my anthem. If my mother and father didn't bond over this song, I think there would be a good chance I wouldn't be here. I wouldn't be able to experience all the bad and good things in my life. I often look up to the stars, the stars that my dad and mom love differently and love them as well. I am grateful for them, I'm grateful for this song for in a sense it gave me life. I'm sorry this may sound dramatic but I'm in my feelings today, it's been years since I've listened to this and so much has happened. I just want to say that even though it may feel like life is pain, there is so much for you to experience and love. Thank you for reading.
Probably I’m just not on the internet or looking enough, but your thoughts and way of wording them sound so much like mine and I’ve never seen that before :)
I was 9 years old when I figured out that my Father never wanted kids and my Mother was insane. I quickly learned to take care of myself. Our family moto was “if you fall behind, you will be left behind”. Still, it made me the strong person that I am today. You are probably much the same.

@melaniewood3506 hi! Thank you so much for your kind words. These past two years I've actually gotten in contact with my mom again. I hope the things you have been working through will become better. Take care of yourself
Summary from a critic with a MA in American Literature: A modest girl leaves her home to go see the movies with her friend. Her mother, most likely over protective, says no. Her father, however, tells her to go. A sort of character analysis early in the song. The girl walks to the theatre, but her friend ditched her. She sits in a seat and sees a scene she's seen too many times. Sailors fighting in the dance hall, craziness ensues. Lots of metaphor. The girl sees all of the events going on in her world as the movie plays. She's seen it all before. She wants a change. She understands this is something she's all too familiar with. She has a change of consciousness and wonders, is there anything beyond her life?
So I interpreted daddy has told her to go as he's kicking her out of the house, but in the context of the entire song i think your version makes more sense 😅
It was a god awful small affair... - Affair... the use of that word makes me think that she is pregnant. The song continues, mummy telling her to abort and daddy telling her to leave... Her realization that she is going to raise a child alone is her sunken dream.
I'm feeling so sad because I didn't have a chance to go on his concert, and I started following him too late, now, when he's not with us anymore....now I see that he really was a wonderful man, love him

Well, I'm 57 years old now and became a Bowie fan in 1983 with Lets Dance, at the age of 16! Because of the 'hide' it contains, I got my current name...! I grew up with him and like to refer to him as my 'Dad'. Recently while attending a tribute band, I received compliments from various people on my singing, not ultimately from the band itself!! I was the only one who got a group photo with the musicians! Kind regards, Vivian Hyde 🙂

@@OneFlewOverTheCuckoo1999 Absolutely, I couldn't agree with you more. I have known this song since its inception but now when hearing the lyrics my mind is seeing the instances of mass criminality perpetrated by white vigilantes (sailors) hostile to integration joining together into roving mobs (Congress as a dance hall) that took ‘justice’ in their own hands in an attempt to beat up the wrong guy look at the cavemen (QAnon) go. Its the freakiest show. Its on America's tortured brow that Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow (all the conspiracies). This phenomenal song is having its course or existence altered now when hearing. I love this song...........although it depresses me to hear it. 1973, married with 3 kids, 27 years old and having a wild relationship with another woman. I was crazy about this woman............and she felt the same. Problem was; she had kids..........I had kids, so the overall mixture was wild passion and guilt. Life on Mars was in the charts at the time and the mood of the song seemed to encapsulate what was happening to us. Loved it and hated it. Whenever I hear the song all these years later it transports me straight back to 1973 and the feelings I was going through at the time.
Hunky Dory is my favourite Bowie album. I was a little late in discovering him and began to buy his albums. It began with the release of Let's Dance (now my least favourite) and I quickly started buying his earlier albums, probably the first being ChangesOne just to see what I was about to get into. But Hunky Dory remains my favourite and it contains not a single bad track. Changes is a song that I will never tire of listening to and no amount of radio play it gets it is timeless, feeling just as fresh now as it did on its initial release.
I love David Bowie forever and ever, have loved him since I his 1st song, Space Oddity, shook my world 🌎. I have always loved Life On Mars. I loved it when Jessicca Lange sang it in American Horror Story, it fit perfectly into Freak Show. I mourned so hard when he died January 10th, 2016. I still miss Bowie and I always will.
I love this song now because I first heard it on the TV show a couple months ago when I first watched it and honestly I'm so happy I do cause I've always liked Bowie but he was such an icon
Bowie, at the time of Hunky Dory's release in 1971, summed up the song as "A sensitive young girl's reaction to the media." In 1997, he added: "I think she finds herself disappointed with reality... that although she's living in the doldrums of reality, she's being told that there's a far greater life somewhere, and she's bitterly disappointed that she doesn't have access to it."[

Wolfie D NO, THERE'S NO LIFE ON MARS! THE MOON LANDING WAS A HOAX!
so true
Thats not true
I saw the rocket take off.
What a genius, thank you for the music 🎶 RIP DAVID BOWIE 🙏
I had the great pleasure of chatting to the man himself, at the NEC in Birmingham about 1981. What a guy.
Will we ever grasp the depths of David Bowie's genius?
My favorite DB song 😢
To think this is actually gonna be the first song played on Mars
Lyrics are amazing, mesmerizing. It took me more than a few times to get it. What a story.
I deeply love this song.
I'm here because of the kdrama Life on Mars. I loved this song before but now it means even more to me. Jung Kyoung-Ho is amazing there.
Love the way that trailer used this song! Can’t wait to check out the show
I love this song now because I first heard it on the TV show a couple months ago when I first watched it and honestly I'm so happy I do cause I've always liked Bowie but he was such an icon
I can see Sam Tyler
Bowie, at the time of Hunky Dory's release in 1971, summed up the song as "A sensitive young girl's reaction to the media." In 1997, he added: "I think she finds herself disappointed with reality... that although she's living in the doldrums of reality, she's being told that there's a far greater life somewhere, and she's bitterly disappointed that she doesn't have access to it."[
Its so sad how i dicovered him 5 years after he died😭😭😭😭😭I LOVE HIM SO MUCH
Fantastic lyrics, a song with so much meaning, we bow down to a genious
Outstanding. Love it since then. Outstanding.
That voice. RIP David.
Found this song from American Horror Story: Freakshow. Jessica Lang really sold it, no clue it was actually Bowie :O

“Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids. In fact it’s cold as heck, and there’s no else to raise them if you did.” Elton John
I absolutely love love this song 🎵
Imagine David Gilmour was part of this band and the guitar solo just took off to another planet
“Take a look at the lawman beating up the wrong guy..” - this is what happening to the world now.
Not All But You Are Right
It's always been happening. And it always will.
Funny Name the song is deep, it’s about television and how it warps people’s perception on reality. I think.
that lyric always hits me really hard, for this very reason
One of the best songs I heard so far
Thxs for this vid. RIP David Bowie

This song is more than perfect because David included Lennon into it.
It's a reference to Lenin, not Lennon.
The man had a voice like an angel 👼 😇
Thanks Eli, for introducing me to this amazing stuff. 🤩
This song is so topical to many of our cultural woes. R.I.P David Bowie
