      Thanks Brother, I actually watched another one of your vids & saw in the background a can of MH Ready Patch. I have never heard of it but I am curious, does it hold up well to the hot sun, humidity & moisture. I like working with PVC but really I just want to find a product that is a good all purpose hole filler for various types of siding, wood, & PVC etc. @@JonPetersArtHome

    Hi Jon, as someone who works a lot with Azek/ pvc, I see several potential problems. When using pvc, pvc glue should always be used. It is stronger than screws or nails, since the glue welds the pieces together. My other concern is that you e mixed dis-similar materials, pvc and wood. Pvc expands drastically with temperature changes, as it expands it will blow apart your wood joints. Since you’ve introduced pvc into the project, why wouldn’t you do it all in pvc? The pvc holds paint really well, doesn’t rot, and is impervious to insects. Pvc is a great product when used correctly. It’s unfortunate that there is very little training for the material. Dark colors are also a big problem for pvc, it with cause the pvc to expand more drastically than normal. Nice lamp post!

    • @JonPetersArtHome
      @JonPetersArtHome  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jeff, thanks… yes I understand all your concerns with mixing the materials… I think because the Azek part of the lamp post is only 5 1/2 inches wide it should be okay… but I will post an update if not. I have used Azek glue on other projects and yes it works great but it’s also very expensive and I didn’t want to buy it and didn’t really think it necessary for such a small project. Painting it black is not going to help with the expansion and contraction but one thing the lamp post has going for it is that it is in the shade almost all the time.
      I’ll revisit the project this time next year and let everyone know how it’s doing.
      Thanks again, Jon

      @@JonPetersArtHome Having used PVC glue, I will agree with Jeff--it makes a very strong joint. But I also like Jon's approach. He just used up a lot of leftover wood & PVC scraps, and he was willing to roll the dice and see how this lamp post held up (or doesn't) over time. We all do that sometimes!

    You said the cap was white oak but you didn't say what the rest of the face frame was. It looked a bit like oak in some of the shots. I was wondering how you ran wires to the top of the post for the light. From the shot where you are sliding the cover onto the post it appears that you have conduit running up the inner post in a dado.

      A combination of red Grandis and Sapele… just using woods that I had in the shop that can be used outside. Since I’m not an electrician I don’t show any electrical work on my channel

    Jon you didn’t address the lamp install. I was kind of hoping this was a solar lamp install since my property is just to big to run wires. Most of my exterior lighting is some kind of solar because most of my yard has no wiring or old wiring. So I’m highly motivated to go solar.
