SHED/ANTLER DOG TRAINING WITH A PUPPY

Think it’s possible to train a Belgian Malinois/Dutch Shepherd mix to do this or would a Lab be better? PS what kind of lab is yours?

I think any dog can do it to be honest if they have the drive for it. I have a chocolate and a silver lab that both come in the woods with me

Malinois and dutchies are typically super drivey dogs with incredible noses. There's a reason law enforcement use these breeds and german shepherds for tracking. You'll have no problem with your dog.

Yes, there are many blood tracking dogs. I choose to stick with only antlers with mine.

What age did you start your pup to shed hunt I just bought a chocolate lab and I’m working with him to find things and he’s doing good but he doesn’t want anything to do with the little antler I got him

I started her around 5 months old. My older lab was the same way as your chocolate. Took him awhile and lots of treats later to realize bringing an antler was a good thing. After they get it trust me they will get it. Just keep working brother!

Some guys believe it helps but I do not let my dogs chew on antlers. I feel like if they have it all the time at home they lose the drive. But that’s just my opinion on it

Do you put scent on these shed during home training?

After the visual is recognized then I start adding scent to them. Do the same routine for a few weeks before I start hiding them so that they have to use their nose to find them.
