This was so neat to watch! I missed the 70s, but I've been all about the 60s and early 70s since I was a kid, entirely all of my wall art and decor are from the era, and I hosted some fun 60s/70s parties when I was in high school in the late 90s/00s! What a great collection you've got 🌼

Every inch of my bedroom walls and ceiling had posters covering them. I was crazy about Suzanne Somers (RIP) and Lynda Carter. I had about 3 Ronstadt posters. Also had posters of the NHL Original Six a cousin handed down to me, posters from albums like ‘Dark Side’, sports action posters with Joe Namath and Dr. J. But my pride was a giant poster of Fonda and Hopper on their choppers from ‘Easy Rider’ and a poster of Lenny Bruce in a jail cell giving the world the bird (I think from an album but I don’t remember which one). Thanks for making me feel young right before another year comes around to make me feel older.

You cannot fully appreciate the 70s and what they were like unless you're old enough to remember them as they happened. I turned 18 in 1970 and what I probably remember most is how incredibly inexpensive everything was (except for gasoline). College tuition, rent, food, furniture, vinyl records, electronics, even new cars went for dirt-cheap prices that we can only dream about today. I paid for them all during those years while working at jobs that paid very modest wages. One of the highlights back then was eagerly awaiting the next new Beatles solo LP or single -- at a time when all four were still very young -- though we never imagined for a moment that half a century later we'd still be anxiously anticipating the deluxe anniversary editions of those very same LPs.

Your 8 track spinning container on the couch is bring me flashbacks. My brother had several 8 track containers as he had a red mg car. Had a big set up in his room too. I never went to 8 track, was a vinyl purist. My brother had the bedroom next to me and our stereo wars were epic. He was a Blue Oyster Cult, Robin Trower, Nazareth, Kansas, Jethro Tull kind of rocker. I was a huge Who fanatic, Kinks, Stones, Traffic, Neil Young, Fairport 😢Convention, Pentangle, Blind Faith , Yes, Faces, Humble Pie, Les ZepplinJoni Mitchell, Linda Rogstadt , Chicago ( huge Terry Kath fan) always and forever The Beatles. My posters were black light and rock bands. I still have my Who maximum R and B, the coolest rock poster ever. I think Suzanne Summers died recently. Favorite shows MASH, Barney Miller, TAXi, Bob Newhart and WKRP.

Thanks for the great content in 2023 Matt! I look forward to your videos in the New Year. How about taking a look at the inserts/posters from 60`s and 70`s albums? I had several on my walls as a teenager in the seventies: the giant poster from The White Album (with lyrics on the reverse), the pyramid poster from Dark Side of the Moon, the Marquee poster from Live at Leeds, the Who poster from Odds & Sods, the Goat`s Head Soup poster from the album. It seemed like almost every album came with some goodies you could pin up on the wall. Cheers!

I could never understand "Sha Na Na" because they came along at a time when "nostalgia" to me meant "anachronistic"... of course when I got closer to college I fully embraced all things "old school"... even so, Sha Na Na was kind of a parody of the 1950s rather than an authentic "retro" act -- I think The Stray Cats captured that market in a much more genuine way

For years, a parking spot directly in front of the building you were intending to go to was called "a Kojak" among my friends. My wife once asked if I had a crush on Marsha Brady as a teen because Maureen McCormick and I are the same age. I confessed my crush was on Susan Dey, an older woman. My stepbrother had a full length Peggy Lipton poster above his bed circa 1970 maybe?

What an impressive, nostalgic collection, holy crap. Huge time capsule. Great video,..I had a crush on Debbie Harry and Linda Carter. Your 8 track collection reminds me of my reel to reel collection. I loved Dukes Of Hazzard for the car jumps...later on realizing the plots and the acting was cheader cheeser as all get up. I got such a kick of some of your comments on some of these posters...loved it. I was a child of the 70's and 51 years old so this was fantastic. Thanks Matt and Happy New Year to you and yours.

Got an odd question for you Matt. Or who knows - maybe not so odd. Where would you place the Flamin’ Groovies in your own musical cosmology (odd use of the term, I know) ? Do you see them as a 60s band or just a 70s cover band ? They did start in the 60s and they did write a lot of their own material and even their attire is 60s. On Teenage Head they look like the Stones circa Beggars Banquet and on Shake Some Action they’re wearing those super-cool mobster suits that the Move used to wear (which were in turn inspired by that ultimate British 60s phenomenon, the Kray Brothers). Or do they kind of straddle the decade so much like the MC5 or Stooges that they don’t really fit in either decade neatly enough to call ? There are two bands which weren’t 60s groups but should have been and that’s Big Star and Badfinger but as usual I digress.
I also wanted to rave with joy because I found a true jewel on Bandcamp and that’s the first solo album by Hugh Hopper of the Soft Machine ‘1984’. It is weird, weird, weird. It’s all tape loops and other strange effects but manages to make a coherent and excellent whole regardless. It’s a little like Wonderwall Music by George Harrison or If I Could Only Remember My Name by David Crosby. Nothing remotely commercial about it but in this instance that’s a virtue. As far as solo Soft Machine goes I easily rank it as equal to Rock Bottom by Robert Wyatt or Joy of a Toy by Kevin Ayers. I was willing to shell out big time for it but amazingly it was only 10 bucks.
And as if that were not enough I also found one of the ultimate obscure gems of them all - Voices and Music by Jan Steele and John Cage, fittingly enough on the Obscure record label. As a teenager I was forever seeing it in used record bins but didn’t buy it for the bizarre reason that I believed I wouldn’t ‘understand’ it. At long last it dawned on me that ‘understanding’ music is irrelevant. Like ‘understanding’ the weather. Do my ears enjoy what’s going into them is really the only criteria. So as a result I now have a voluminous John Cage collection because he sounds good. But for other Soft Machine fans who may read this, Robert Wyatt is all over this thing - his damaged and neurotic angel voice singing the poetry of James Joyce and Zen aphorisms of Cage while Steele and Cage do that weird atmospheric thing they do in the background. It’s awesome, believe me. Even that ultimate raging ahole of rock critics Robert Christgau (he who called Jimi Hendrix a ‘psychedelic Uncle Tom’ infamy) gave ‘Words and Music’ an A in his column. Infuriating as he may be, his A and A+ albums are all worth hearing and this is no exception.

Also, the old pinup were not posters as we know them but magazine pin ups no bigger than Life Magazine size.

To display those, you need one of those old K-Mart flip racks for the wall of your playroom. That's how they were sold, for years- in plexiglass flip racks, with a number shown, and when you made your selection they were rolled up in shrink-wrap plastic in stacks below, with corresponding numbers on the ends.

KC & The Sunshine Band were hardly kaput by the end of the 70s. "Please Don't Go" rocketed to #1 on the charts in 1979 while a terrible cover of "Yes I'm Ready" with Teri Desario on co-lead vocals somehow went all the way to #2 the same year. KC&TSB's final hit, the awesome "Give it Up" hit the top 20 in 1983, giving ol' Harry Wayne Casey a full decade of hits.

    • @lincoslam

Thanks for mentioning this....KC and the Sunshine Band often gets shoved into the "disco train" and pushed over the cliff by the anti disco crowd. Of course me being one of those anti disco 'activists" in the '77-'79 period, I will admit that I had all the KC 45s from '75-'79. The thing is, I never really considered KC and the Sunshine Band a disco outfit so much as a funky horn outfit, I think if TK Records didn't go belly up and a stronger label picked them up they may have been able to survive the 80's....or maybe not. Get Down Tonight was like nothing else on the radio in 1975.
