What about macOS, I did actually do the same steps you did but when I try to login in phpmyadmin with the username and password I created in mysql its showing me this error
Cannot log in to the MySQL server
mysqli::real_connect(): (HY000/2002): No such file or directory

No, in HERD's own documentation I remember reading that there was no linux version because they considered that anyone using linux was a freak who didn't need the help of sophisticated environments, more words, less words :P
