  • A funny #powerpop song about #college, inspired by #elviscostello

My wife Amy and I were talking about a band mate who had a heavy course load. Amy said Amelia wasn't exactly taking underwater basket weaving. I thought about it and said, "That course actually sounds pretty hard." We laughed and quickly came to the conclusion we should write a song about it.
Underwater basket weaving is a term used to put down colleges not considered to offer serious academics, like "Oh, that school? They only offer majors in underwater basket weaving!"
    Lyrics:
I took a course in underwater basket weaving
On paper it looked easy, but it was so deceiving
I never thought of what it would be
To weave a basket under the sea
Now these are credits I won’t be receiving
I lost my cool when my wicker got all wet
I look back on it now with with much regret
Do you hold your breath down there while you weave?
Or do you use a snorkel to breathe?
If anything’s harder, I ain’t seen it yet
    Underwater basket weaving
The ultimate skill to be achieving
If you can do that, you can do anything
This ain’t no course for no ding-a-ling
My mom would say the course wasn’t serious
I thought it sounded kind of dumb but mysterious
Though It’s not rocket science or brain surgery
It turned out harder than those classes for me
I couldn’t catch my breath and I got delirious
I flunked a course in underwater basket weaving
I thought I got it made but now that’s a grade I’m grieving
We joked about it back in the day
A piece of cake, and an easy A
Now in my intellect I have stopped believing
    Underwater basket weaving
The ultimate skill to be achieving
If you can do that, you can do anything
This ain’t no course for no ding-a-ling
The joke was on me as I would soon discover
I badly misjudged this book by its cover
That impossible course pulled my average down
    At least I’m lucky I didn’t drown
    Underwater basket weaving
The ultimate skill to be achieving
If you can do that, you can do anything
This ain’t no course for no ding-a-ling
I took a course in underwater basket weaving

Good Sunday afternoon, my friend, and I absolutely cannot get enough of this song in all its iterations!! And what a great video, with all the fantastic underwater divers and images and aquatic life beneath the Sea… And this really is a perfect blend of Elvis Costello meets Springsteen (It did occur to me that the quick little electric guitar feel towards the end has such a Journey vibe- at least that’s what popped into my mind); now you know I love all your music, but there’s just something about this song that I cannot get out of my head 🧑🏻‍🦱🎼🎤🎸🥁🎸🎹

Thanks Steve! I'm glad you caught the little Journey quote coming out of the 2nd verse. Amy and I had a good laugh coming up with "In my intellect, I have stopped believing." That's when I thought it would be funny to quote "Don't Stop Believin'." That little solo took quite a bit of practice to get it precise, but was totally worth it!
