- A year ago jockey Kent Desormeaux lost a bid for a Triple Crown when he had to pull up heavy favorite Big Brown . On June 6 in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), he got his elusive Belmont victory when he guided Summer Bird to an upset in the third leg of the Triple Crown before a crowd of 52,861.
All eyes in the $1 million event were on the other bird in the field, Mine That Bird, but the 6-5 favorite came up short, finishing third as Dunkirk got second. Both Summer Bird and Mine That Bird are sons of Birdstone , who won the Belmont in 2004.

Mine That Bird lost the Triple Crown by just 3 lengths. Most underrated horse!
Calvin took Bird a little too early....but damn did he still run a good race...what a talented horse!!

It was a year of Birds, Mine That Bird and Summer Bird, both of Birdstone's sons won Triple Crown races.
I would have told Calvin Borel to take a hike after he decided to ride Rachel Alexander in the Preakness.
“And it is MINE THAT BIRRRRRRD!” That gave me goosebumps.
Calvin blew it, MTB should be coming late like Summer bird, instead he forgot this was the Belmont, a race 400 meters longer than the Derby..
Borel spent time on TV shows, including a trip to CA, and didn't spend enough time studying Belmont.
That’s the hardest part of being a jockey, if MTB won they will say “what a brilliant ride from CB” if not, either he let go too soon or put the horse in wrong position. But the owner & trainer should be thankful of the whole TC journey. Their names along with the horse have a place in the history book aside from the money it earned.

I thought Borel gave a good trip but the triple crown is an impressive accomplishment. Mine that Bird was a 50-1 six weeks before so I think the horse was an overachiever that did nothing afterwards. Borel is not at fault.

Bird had a great triple crown. A 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I think he could've won the Preakness if Borel had rode him.
Shortly after the Belmont he had epiglottis surgery, then was ripped from is trainer and sent off to Lukas' big barn who messed around with him. Horses know when they don't want to run anymore...

3 Grt horses. Birdstn beat Smarty Blmt Stks NY. I was there so we're 120m. Afleet Alex Another sprklr Jeremy Rose Up & of course Summer Bird a lite Blmt Stks closer which is what I like.
Aside from Secretariat, Afleet Alex was the greatest Belmont runner in history.

Borel moved MTB too early. He is awful except at the Derby. The team of MTB should have left Mike Smith on MTB for this race and made a mistake going back to Calvin. The time was a good time. Nice win Summer Bird.
bnegs521 Mike Smith took Mind That Bird way wide in the Preakness which cost him the race. Mind That Bird stopped running once he got the lead in the Belmont and had no one to chase. Borel thought the pace was slow and he had to make an earlier mover.
Borel completely fucked up that ride. Do not make excuses for that illiterate fool that can barely speak English and cannot do anything outside of Churchill. Borel will not have a ride in this years Belmont again and the reason is because he is pure garbage.
And there is NO comparison between Smith and Borel. That is like comparing a horse to a mule or your horse racing knowledge to mine. Just a joke. Like yourself.
He's won the Derby twice. Yeah, he's a real idiot. Most jocks wouldn't of had the courage to take a mount like Mind That Bird. Plus he is such garbage, he rode on Rachel Alexandra.

Borel probably would of won the Preakness if he chose to stay on Mind That Bird.
CSM1470 No way. Rachel Alexandra was virtually untouchable as a three year old.
Watch the race and keep an eye on Mind That Bird.
CSM1470 Borel did win the Preakness. But they could have gone around again and MTB would not have passed Rachel on that day.
@@charleslockhart6778 you might want to watch the last furlong of the Preakness again. MtB simply ran out of real estate. If Rachel Alexander was so great where was she in this race? Oh that's right, she didn't want to compete, so she didn't run.
CSM1470 - I just rewatched the Preakness and I stand by what I said. Mine That Bird was gaining at the end but still had not gotten within one length of Rachel. She was known to fight when challenged so I doubt MTB could make up the length and pass her seeing MTB came up short at the longer distance three weeks later.
I hate to say it but this one's on Borel. Nevertheless he's still one of the greatest jockey and goodluck on his retirement!
If you know anything about horse racing usually the Belmont is fixed so the jockeys and trainers and owners can make millions of dollars by betting the right combinations this race was no different summerbird had no business being at odds of 11 well Dunkirk and charitable man we're both at 5 they kept putting money on summerbird just to keep him there so the public would not play that horse
