You're comment is spot on. There is a visual test of comfort, showing slides of people in various ways, testing one's comfort-zone. Consider a slide of a white person that looks similar to me, especially in build (5'8"), then, similarly, a black guy. I'd pick the white guy, although, if you increased the white guy's height by 6", i'd now prefer being with the black guy. I find size, for some reason, more of an issue than color of skin. Continuing the thought experiment, if the shorter white guy were dressed as a Hell's Angel and the black guy in slacks and polo shirt, i'd pick the black guy in a heartbeat. It seems culture/class trumps color of skin, at least, for me. If presented with a picture of a young black women, not particularly bad looking, but dressed well and that of a white woman with a tooth missing, dressed as a mountaineer, i'd pick the black women in an instant. Color of the opposite gender is of a low priority with regard for to my comfort. Now, if presented with the picture a towering, heavy-weight, black dude of the hood carrying a baseball bat; i'd shutter. Does this singular response indicate racism or of a deep, tribal influence that just may be hardwired into my brain?

I raised my children the same way as that woman’s letter. Although they are not black, and I never had a motivation because I thought they might be treated lesser than others, I read to them daily, sang with them, puzzles, magnetized letters on the fridge, library every week, no tv unless educational, etc. And she is absolutely correct. My daughters were reading and began to spell at age two. Tested higher than all the other classmates. My youngest daughter was the first eighth grader in HISTORY to receive the Presidential Honor roll. Reward after reward. Reading at a junior high level in second grade, etc. This is not to brag, although I am a proud mama. Simply just to say that taking time with your children in the first five years is so INCREDIBLY important for success in life.
Ps yet another reason why its important we motivate the men to be the bread winners and more responsible and manipulate the economy so that one parent may be blessed enough to stay home and do this for our children.
