I got my first SZ 19 years ago, and since that day have wanted to get a MMM1. I finally found one last week, at a very reasonable price, and it's delivered in a few days. The super 58 pups have way less output than the normal SZ pickups (1st and 2nd gen), so should make those low notes be more articulate. This is my 13th sz though, I still need to get the 1220, the mfm1, and the bright blue 520 to complete the goal I originally set out to get all the versions I liked... it's funny though, maybe it's getting older or maybe it's getting close to completing the collection, but the versions I never really cared about are starting to grow on me. The gold top 320, the amber burst 520, the amber 520fm with the heartbeat inlay, the red/black burst 720. I don't think I'll ever get any if the late models that had the chevron inlays, it makes the neck too busy. I kind of feel the same way about the 720s with the inlays at every usually position but at least they're the original tribal sorta thing. It's too bad that Ibanez ruined the line when they switched to making the SZR versions, they don't hold a candle to the SZs. You know what's surprising, though, is that some of the 320s I have play and feel nicer than my prestige 2020ex and they cost maybe a ¼ of the price. It just speaks to how nice the guitars coming out of Korea were at the time, and still are today. Like I mentioned, there are a cpl of the top end ones I don't have yet but if I had to pick my favourite version(s) so far it would be the 2020fm and the white 320ex, they're both amazing guitars. I didn't mean to ramble this long, I just love these, and it's easy to get carries away. Thanks for the video, and I hope you reach your goal.
Thanks for nice comments! I'd love to have 1220 and one of the 520fm with the heartbeat inlay in my collection. I agree with you on busy necks with the chevron inlays. I'm also not a fan of the 720 with all the inlays. And I'm also a fan of Korean guitars from that period. The quality sometimes varied, but they pumped a lot of excellent guitars. SZs are super cool, very underappreciated Ibanez series.
BTW, I just checked and there's a Bright Blue for sale locally to me for a good price. If you're in Europe, this will be very easy to get to you. Shoot me an email to ibbyhead at gmail if you're interested :)
I AM (WAS, THEY SEEMS HAVE DISAPPEARED!) A STAIND FAN AND THE SAME YEAR YOU DID I BOUGHT ONE, MAN I STILL HAVE IT IN PERFECT CONDITIONS, NOT A SINGLE MINIMUM SCRATCH, ONLY A BASE OIL WOOD FEEDING AND VOILA': IT IS NEW! GREAT MASSIVE SOUND BUT IF YOU WANT PLAY JAZZ SHE DOES PERFECTILY!
Hey man! I have the same baritone. I bought it from a close friend a couple years ago. I'm a very inexperienced player, so the tuning compared to a standard guitar was very intimidating and confusing for me, but it's become quite the opposite. Even if you accidentally bump it, great tones seem to ooze out! I'm glad to find that it's a unique instrument. I'd happy to share some pics if you're interested.
I have similar experience with tones oozing out. I love to just noodle on this guitar in the evening and it gives great sounds. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
@@Ibbyhead What guage strings are you using, or what do you recommend for BEADF#B tuning? When I bought mine, it had flat wound strings which gave it a pretty unique sound and feel.
@@MP_Soundbox I use NYXL 12-60 or Ernie Balls 13-72. Use the same tuning I think (it's "baritone standard", right? basically 5 semitones down from E-standard) .
I have one of these, too, and I find it quite interesting that they pops up in music videos from time to time. Wind Rose and Apocalypse Orchestra have one, for example.
When i bought the guitar it had a SD SH6 distortionset in it. I replaced the bridge pickup for a custom 5 trembucker. I think it sounds better. But it also depends much on wich amp the guitar is played. I started with a marshall code 50, terrible. After that a marschall dsl 20 head that was ok,and now a randall rd20 head, that sounds so much better, the low end does have more punch.
I have the same one as well! changed pickups and machine heads on it to make it into a djent machine, but to be honest tuning is still a struggle. It can pull off stuff like Drop A easily, but tuning it to Drop F with 13-72 strings got me very unstable results.
Can you do a series on the Japan made prestige and joy pistons from 1997-2001? In my opinion the best era of Ibanez guitars. Besides the rg550 reissues I won’t buy Ibanez from outside that range. Some of the spot ,Arlen jcustoms from Japan are just mind numbing!
This era was crazy good! I'll soon cover the RG3120, the flagship of that area. Also would like to touch on the neck-through Prestiges from that period. Awesome guitars, I totally agree that's probably one of the best periods for Ibanez.

@@MP_Soundbox you should grab the ernie ball baritone 6 string pack (13-72 i think) and tune that puppy down to G# like Mushok does.

Interesting, didn't know that! Thanks for coming by and commenting! :)
Wish i could have one..Craving for one for years..
They show up every now and then on secondary market, but prices are more and more crazy. Hope you'll get one someday!
@@Ibbyhead it's super rare, so if you somehow decide to sell it in the future, let me know :)
I’m just bought the MMM1 in damn near perfect condition for 300$.
What a score! Congrats!
@@Ibbyhead thanks
The original prototypes were Radius (Satriani) bodies, bolt on. I’m in the process of having a replica made.
Yeah, there're some photos with him holding one. Really cool project!
Thankx for the video, i got the same guitar for a few years now. Love to play it every time. Mine just dit not have the stock pickups.
What pickups do you have in yours? I'd like to test something else in that guitar :)

I’ve owned a few of these, they are heavy as hell but cool. The bridge is sick. Also owned the sz4020…
SZ4020 is very nice too! I'd love to pickup the Japanese SZ1220 one day. And yeah, they weigh quite a bit :D
Do not change the pickups, these sound way better than any pickup you can think of
I didn't end up doing it at this point, but maybe still consider.
@@Ibbyhead don’t do it

Thanks for the comment! I'm looking into swapping pickups in it. I'd love to try to fit the Fishman Fluence into it!
@@Ibbyhead you should check out bare knuckle!
Yeah, I like some of their models too!
