your videos are just as helpful to nursing students as medical students. You teach all the same stuff our professors attempt to teach us but in such a better way!

I THANK YOU so much for these videos and making it so simple for me. I'm not a physician, but the content in my nursing program is made easier because of you. THANK YOU again and keep em coming.

0:34------ just a little shortcut if you want to use it. I was taught the ROME method for quick interpretation of ABG's to tell if patient problem is respiratory or metabolic. Really simple. Respiratory Opposite Metabolic Equal. For Ex: High paCO2 and low ph = Respiratory Acidosis (it helps to use arrows-- ^ -CO2 v-ph) , Ex: ^ HCO3 ^ ph = Metabolic Alkalosis since both of the arrows are ^. just a quick little reference for ya. ROME it lol

Wow great job!! Question: Am I correct in thinking that the Ketone Acidosis part isn't harmful? After all people on no carb diets like Adkins intentionally do it. So the real problem comes from the very high glucose levels? But I still don't quit understand the relative hyper K+. Is it from the higher extra cellular gradient with glucose pulling the K+ out of the cells ? Thanks again great videos......

Thats best way to remember but the actual mechanism is because we have metabolic acidosis, cells eat up H+ from serum but they need to maintain the internal melieu of the cell and hence spit out K+ (intracellular potassium is 140 and extracellular is 4+, so no need of energy to do that (osmosis), we are already short of energy here remember no glucose)

I'm t1 diabetic and I'm still confused. Is it the ketones which cause the acidosis or the combo of the high bg and ketosis? Can I get DKA as a t1 on a low carb diet?

Initially isotonic ns abt 1-2 ltr. Then switch to .45% ns after initial bolus if serum sodium is high or normal. Now if glucose is less than 250mg/dl ,5% dextrose-salune is given
