    EPISODE 114
    In this Christmas special, we have to move 7 tons (14,000lbs) of lead from the old workshop to the new one. The 5-ton original keel is far too heavy to move in one piece, so I have to cut it into smaller pieces - with a chainsaw?!
    We also get a tour of ROEDDA, a beautiful 1931 wood fishing tender, and we meet her new owner and captain Alex.

    I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

    The lead keel story has been a great story in itself. The cross sections of the old keel looked nicely designed even if the pour was a bust. So nice to have talented help available on the next pour, but the new mold and melt will be another huge task.

      A very important part of the process will be getting the new keel positioned precisely underneath the hull & lifting it up to mate w/ the timber keel, w/o bending or deforming the soft lead casting !

    Seriously, look up the recovery prices of "low alpha lead". This could easily finance the entire cost of the recast keel. 10x or more in recovery value of old lead that does not have modern radiation in it. This is a good idea, Leo. You don't need the low radioactive lead for authenticity.

    • @Urd_Voiddaughter
      @Urd_Voiddaughter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I was thinking the same thing during the attempted recast. Lead that old is usually low radiation and can be quite valuable. Selling it and using new lead does add to the Ship of Theseus problem but it might very well be a good decision.

    If you take 5 - 20’ x 1” rebar rods and weld them into a five equidistant polygon formation to be the core of the lead pour you will find that they do not need preheating and that they will act as a heat sink which will cause the lead to harden in place with a horizontal (lengthwise) crystal strand structure giving the keel much greater balance and shape. If you are going to do it in shorter sections the same idea will work. Do not allow any of the rebar to remain exposed after the pour as it will eventually oxidize in place. While this will not effect the overall functionality of the keel it is cleaner and nicer to have an enclosed pour. Also, you can weld-attach to at least three of the rebar rods a ring (or rings) that are integrated into the core of the structure and (if galvanized) can act over the long run as hangers for the moving or removal of the lead. I would recommend creating the precise shape you want in the mold by lining it with Satanite and then chipping it off after the cast. You can get intensely accurate pours this way in much the same as lost wax casting in green sand or plaster.

    We used Lead weights in Race Cars, and about 30 years ago we went to the Shipyard, heard we could get the lead we needed out of old Sail Boat Keels, a friend had done it before using a Chain Saw and I too was very surprised how easy it cut, we melted it down and poured it in weights which other Racers would buy from us, we had a one time 4,000 lbs. of lead. Love this build Leo keep up the good work. Merry Christmas

    • @willrogers5667
      @willrogers5667 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@michaelharris1843 Most classes of auto racing have a minimum weight requirement, the car is built and has weights attached (firmly) to bring it up to the requirement. This allows for variations in driver's weight, different size fuel tank, etc. to be easily compensated. Also, the front/rear balance or weight distribution can be adjusted in this way, where permitted..

    This might not still be an option, but lead that was smelted before the 1950s is worth more than modern lead for shielding. I'm not sure if it would be enough more for it to make sense to sell that lead and rebuy, or even if it's still an option after the attempt to pour new lead on, but it might be worth looking at.

    • @duncanpotter5838
      @duncanpotter5838 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      This is a good idea to look into. My understanding is that any metal melted (smelted) after WWII has radioactive contamination in it making it unsuitable for shielding in radiation detection equipment.
      Since you wouldn't care about this in your keel, you might be able to make some surplus money off the old lead.
      Not an expert, but did work in commercial nukes for over 30 years.

    • @janbane9842
      @janbane9842 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Its a great idea! Its called "low aplha lead" its not because of the radiation from Atomic bomb testing from WWII. The radiation accures naturaly in the lead ore due to the lead Isotope 210Pb
      . After refiniing the lead ore to lead the 210PB isotope slowly decays with a halflife time of about 22 years. So as the lead is aging its slowly loosing its radiation. radiation free lead is also very interesting for soldering in high end electrinics.

    Impressive young woman! Is she using that vessel for fishing in the future? Or will it be converted for another business? My english is too bad that i understood her plans. I wish her a lot of success for that what she wants to achive…

      Sounds like she plans to carry caught fish from fishing boats back to the nearest processing plant.

      @@moltderenou Thank you. Here in Germany the fishing fleets are shrinking and the fishery is in decline. I hope in her area it is better to earn enough money to maintain such a big vessel and have money left for her future…

    I've been wondering how you were going to cut up the lead keel and never thought it would be this easy. I thought of everything from torching it to using an axe. Didn't even think of using a chainsaw. Brilliant! Can't wait to see the new keel poured.

    • @KallePihlajasaari

      Kind on neat really, the lead chips are big enough to manage easily. A fine saw would make dust that is hard to pick up.

    The lead-pouring disaster was my introduction to this channel. I'm a hobby machinist and subscribe to a lot of machinist channels. Apparently the Great TH-cam Algorithm (praised be its name) thought that the lead-pouring video would be of interest to me and put it in my feed. I was totally hooked and went back to watch all the videos from the beginning. I eventually became a patron.
