This song is so beautifull. Playing this song is amazing but creating it its just mindblowing, such inspiration and creativity he had when he made this MasterPiece! Thank you.
Thanks for this vid. I started learning guitar at 43 after a lifetime of wanting to, I started the day after I heard THIS song. Ocean is a beautiful gift to mankind. Thanks JB
hey bud hows the guitar going? Ive been playing for 20 years and this song has been the thing that keeps me coming back and continually progressing. This is a master level song, if you havent got the hang of it dont be discouraged. its taken me years.
Daisy Duke all is going well actually. In the last year I’ve been back learning a lot of stuff on effects and gear and actually started up a bunch of facebook groups and now working on, well struggling on figuring out TH-cam. It’s a lot of fun and pretty good pursuit for finding my own voice in all this stuff. Thanks for the reply. I managed to see John butler trio in person finally last summer and It was really amazing.
My all time favourite version of this awesome tune. He manages to play this 6 string just as good as he does his 11 string (from the studio version). The crowd, man, Indian people are a passionate people. They don't just love this performance, they live it, right there in that moment.
I was there my friend! the camera did not capture the sound very well but the place was shaking with enthusiastic students. One of the best memories of my Uni days.
If you don't want to hear the "noise" of the crowd, go to "Ocean" studio version, ppl are living that magic moment, the song makes echoe inside of the person who listening this artwork, if you look at the end of the song, the girl from the background, cry of emotion, man.. just live and let die. I prefer a crowd who express itself with claps and screams, to ppl without a little of emotion, that only record and make selfies with his phones. (Sorry if you don't undestand me jeje, but my mother language is Spanish)
Nestor Romualdo si no nos molesta el público, lo molesto es que haya momentos en que las palmadas tapan la música, cuando se emocionan no es molesto pero el que está detrás de Jhon y aplaude los doce minutos por encima de él si lo es
I just realised that I was acting like the girl sat on the stairs during the whole song, and I don't feel ashamed, not even a little bit. Such a soulful and amazing piece of music that sets itself apart from every other thing
I have a theory that he got so pissed at the octave string on the g [4th] for breaking every 5 minutes he just removed the tuning peg and gave up on it, calling it an 11 string. It's what happened with mine anyway lol
Actually, that day the performance was an impromptu jam session which turned into an actual show. The guitar ( probably a Fender as far as I remember ) was giving some instability issues. It had some nut problem I guess, so that's why he had became kinda hopeless about it and sadly there was no other guitar lying around. I was there that day, one of the best memories of my University days.
You're god damn right, if people are looking for a clean performance from John, they should fucking listen to the studio version, and honestly the crowd only makes it better !
@@bobbyfrank4153 Thats right, and clapping to songs is sucha white man thing and in 9 cases outa 10 its off beat, ruins to performance. Cheering is another thing, thats expressing their love for the performance/artist(s) which is cool, but clapping, just quit that shit :D
Manh ... He is just way too awesome ... It's like reaching the eternity at some spots of the high core stuff ... He does the best the 12 stringed ones.
@@soumyadeephansda1655 it is stained/painted and gloss finished. Doesn't automatically mean laminate and frankly there are some truly phenomenal guitars using laminate sections. The main change in tone, if any, between guitars occurs with a combination of bracing, disparate types of wood, and MOST IMPORTANTLY age. If you take a 30 year old guitar and an exact rebuild of it from last week, there is a notable difference in sound. Additionally, this dude could make a First Act guitar sing.
You guys witnessed something you'll remember forever! Dude's one of my biggest inspiration, and this is the one time I regretted not taking admission in this college lol! Anyways if you've time I've covered this song on a 6 string too.
I don't get why people are moaning about the crowd. They're seeing a rare performance (for them) of an international musician up close and personal. Not that many major artists get to play in India. So, they're clapping along; at least they're enjoying it. I've seen videos of him playing this song at venues in The US and Europe and audience members have been talking all the way through.
Nope, he has a 12 string Maton, just ended up taking off the octave G string and carving a design where the tuner went. Still a 12 string, just uses 11 strings
Oh god I'm seeing this video after so long!!!! I'm so grateful watching John playing on Kolkata's soil, luckier the person whose guitar they are playing. Oh jawn!!!!!!!! (Btw, JU how much did John charge for this concert?)
It was free I guess, somebody requested him personally. That person is an Indian classical instrumentalist, too. The both traded some knowledge, so I know.
The music is spiritual and has deep meaning thats why they are getting into it. Ordinary people living in the moment just for a moment before life takes over again. You people need to get a grip and realize what really matters and yes money can,t fuckin buy it :)
lmao , ik its 5 years late , but if you are still curious the other stings are there to harmonize .so in a 12 string guitar 1,2 are same note but diffent octave , likewise 3-4,5-6 etc.. it makes us feel like there are two guitars being played
I loved the energy of the beautiful people and the vibration of the strings. Just raw.
I remember being here
years later i revisit this video to rewatch a core memory
Wow he can even play sideways, what a legend
LOL.
Lmao great one sir
You sir deserve best comment of the year award
Well he is Australian
Kiwi

Awesome crowd. They made this performance even more fun to watch.
People like John Butler bring us all closer together, no matter where we are from.

This made me cry and I have listened to the studio version many times! 🤎
Is it just me or does the tuning mod-performance just make it so much better
Loved the involvement and energy of the crowd. As a performer you feed off of it.
He doesn't play the music. He is the music. One of the best guitar music ever written. Masterpiece.
I love how they clapped in this clip, great Momment... and love to John Butler as always
With that crowd, this version of Ocean become more alive. Awesome as always!
Thanks for recording that event!

Listen to the Japan Version one of the best renditions
I am from Jadavpur University. Miracles happen here. :-)

The comments are insane. The life of the crowd is what makes this video
I can't believe he came to India... I would trade anything to watch him perform live.,...
What an amazing crowd! Absolutely loving it, such an amazing song.
The girl who gave the capo if already on a hots with John. Never failed to listened to Ocean over and over again. Teary eye as always.
The last 3 mins are INSANE !! And the last 20 sec`s are not from this universe :) ThumbsUp
:) seriously..
Most fantastic song ever, my all time favorite by far, so much soul
Thanks Rohit. The enthusiasm from the crowd was amazing and made something amazing even better. So beautiful. That is a very beautiful girl there..

awesome thanks for sharing. Crowd was awesome! Magic
What an absolute gift... Thank you so much for this video. Now I can finally learn this on my guitar!
Nez949 if you put a tutorial or tablature for a 6 string guitar let me know !
WHAT.THE.FUCK! This man was in Kolkata?? And I just left my home city for Delhi two months ago! FML!
Why are you guys so pissed about the crowd? They're living in the moment, enjoying it.
You're god damn right, if people are looking for a clean performance from John, they should fucking listen to the studio version, and honestly the crowd only makes it better !
Exactly. This a live performance, for the students at the university. It is NOT a performance aimed at a bunch of dickheads on youtube.
They are all clapping off beat that’s why

Because female screeching is annoying as fuck
Wow, I remember visiting Jadavpur to watch this. ❤
Many in the crowd dint know what they were listening to could change their life forever!
My neck is killing me!
so sorry about that :P
Lmfao
Manh ... He is just way too awesome ... It's like reaching the eternity at some spots of the high core stuff ... He does the best the 12 stringed ones.
This is so good even uploaded sideways I watched it all!
amazing people
changed my life man .......changed.....my........life.......
Beautiful! Fantastic musician.
This man made that cheap piece of plastic guitar sounds like heaven.
RockHead TV its still a yamaha :o
it s a decent guitar
Wood. Maybe steel and brass, depending on the strings.

The man carn’t be from this planet. Truly talented & that doesn’t come close 👍👍👍👌✌️👌👍
Never gets old
If JB had synthesized with indian counterpart with the Indian version of instrument, it would have blown the local Indians' mind, anytime. Heavenly.
Love for the audience 🖤🖤🖤🖤
Missed the event and now,i regret it so much...
you shall regret it all your life.
Absolutely :'(
The national anthem of sentience.

sir u r ossam ......happy to meet our kolkatta....
Damn i really want to see John butler play live man
I live in kolkata when the heck did he come??? Can't believe I missed it 😫
Considering this is on a 6, not a 12 string,... this is amazing
Amazing how he still gets that same sound throuhh a six
Obviously sounds better on 12 tho
He usually plays 11 string guitars, not 12 string ones, guys. He removes the higher G string from his guitars.
Pó bácsi he doesn't removes the g string...it actually is a 11 string guitar...!!!

india ?? when ?? i missed it
wow ❤️ nice job bhai
I love the crowd
Amazing song by a great artist.
This was a live performance meaning that a crowd takes part in it. And someone happened filmed it, so don't expect the audience to not get involved.
thanks for your video man
C, g, c, g, c, e thats the magic tuning!
but capo'd to DADADF#. In any case, when you tune to a major 151513, lots of tonics jump right out.
That’s huge because string gauge might not be his, action is not his favorite, 6 strings guitar that is not even his… RESPECT ✊🏼
Divine....
BOW DOWN BEFORE YOUR GOD THE JOHN BUTLER! mere mortals pfft
Wow the crowd was good
It's Kolkata, all the bengali's just make music better and they know what real music is all about.

Guitar God
He actually plays a custom 11 string Maton guitar. Nevertheless, fantastic rendition by the Freo boy.
he removes a string it’s not custom made
WTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE WAS IN INDIA!!!!??!! I am sad, oh but his instrumental Ocean will again cheer me up... Irony.
