- The SoftRobot group of Multi-agent System Lab, is focused on making better soft manipulators. Imitating the plants, our team make a pneumatic soft manipulator with structure of Honeycomb PneuNet(HPN). By modifying the movement of nature flexible organisms and using a model-free machine learning method, we aim to develop a suitable control method for the robot, which can suit the different environments and grasp various objects.

Very cool design! But why pneumatic instead of hydraulic? Weight I figure? But hydraulic should be much stronger and probably more precise.
It would be cool to have something like 3D printed valves and actuators to control a large array of chambers. Maybe embed solenoids and pressure sensors and wires. So you'd only need one pressure line and one release line. Or maybe that is not practical.
It is good to try unconventional techniques. Introducing unnecessary and energy-consuming things, such as electronics, will inevitably complicate the system a lot. Personally, I support liberation from the monopoly of electronics and starting to find alternative systems, whether for control, sensing, or other things.
what are the advantages of this design compared with some other pneumatic soft arm
Load bearing capacity.
