    6. Mike Portnoy - Essentially, an updated, more modern take on the Neil Peart model, adding double bass wizardry to the mix. His detractors are as clueless as it gets. Album picks are Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Liquid Tension Experiment, and PSMS - Live in Tokyo. Track pick is Panic Attack

We are now close to the drummers Top 5, and for today my choice goes to
    6. BARRIEMORE BARLOW, ex-Jethro Tull
Barry had become the replacement of their first drummer Clive Bunker, whom I had much earlier in my list. No disrespect to Clive, he was (and still is) a great drummer. But on my personal opinion, Barry was the best drummer Tull ever had. His debut has been on the “Life Is A Long Song” EP from 1971. In the following year, his drumming on the album/song “Thick As A Brick” was phenomenal. In the years to follow, up to 1979, Tull released seven follow-up albums with him on the drums, plus the live album “Bursting Out”, the latter especially proving that the (back then) 6 men line-up of the late 70s surely was the best, if not the true “classic” line-up of the band.
Highlight albums of Tull with Barry have been for sure “Minstrel In The Gallery” and the folk album trilogy “Songs From The Wood/Heavy Horses/Stormwatch”.
In 1979, it came to a very sad end of the 6-men formation, when their bassist John Glascock tragically died of a valvular heart disease at age 28. Barry, who had been a very close friend to John, was feeling so much devastated when he heard about his passing, that he decided to leave Tull after their “Stormwatch” tour.
He has later played for Kerry Livgren, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Miles and Yngwie Malmsteen - well-known musicians who admired his playing abilities and skills.
In 2008, Barry had a one-off guest appearance with Jethro Tull, playing the drums side by side with Doane Perry on a few songs.
To me, there still remain 5 drummers which I appreciate more, but Barry Barlow always came very close.
    06. Barriemore Barlow
    07. Nick Mason
    08. Lee Kerslake
    09. Roger Taylor

#6...Clive Bunker, Jethro Tull. I think the technique he used on the song Aqualung is among the most innovative and tasteful examples of what a percussionist can do to frame a song without getting in the way, if you know what I mean, that we've ever heard. This band has had some wonderful drummers over the years and Clive is still the best in my opinion. 3 best albums are This Was, Stand Up, and Benefit. Favorite performance is Dharma For One, particularly the live version on the Living in the Past album.

    #6. Mitch Mitchell
It’s said that Jimi had to flip a coin to see which drummer he wanted for his band. I have a feeling he used a two headed coin because Mitch was the perfect fit.
On Are You Experienced Mitch and Noel Redding on bass were restricted as to what they could play. They were nonetheless dynamic still. But Mitch really improvised a lot on Axis: Bold As Love & Electric Ladyland.
He went from a single bass drum to a double bass kit…but his skill was in the snare and tom tom hits very much in the Elvin Jones style. You can hear this so well in songs like “Hear My Train a Comin’” & “Driving South”(from BBC Sessions).
But my song pick is “Voodoo Chile” at 15 minutes on Electric Ladyland. Mitch brings the band back from many stops and starts during the tune. He was described as to the sound of an ax chopping into a tree.
And Mitch reunited with Jimi and Billy Cox on bass after the Band of Gypsys stuff to take Jimi Hendrix back home. Mitch Mitchell…what a talent with the drumsticks. God rest his soul !!

Hi Pete & everyone. Dave here. Excellent pick of yours. My pick today is another jazz-influenced drummer with an iconic rock band. It's CHARLIE WATTS, long-time member of The Rolling Stones (until his death in 2021). Over the weekend I was watching on BBC television a recording of the Stones at Madison Square Garden in 2003 ('Licks Live In NYC'). The whole band was superb but, just like Bill Ward, Charlie's drumming was surprisingly subtle and really elevated the songs.
Albums: Their Satanic Majesties Request (1967); Let It Bleed (1969); Sticky Fingers (1971).
Showcase track: Honky Tonk Women. Syncopated drumming with added cow bells! Mick duetted with Sheryl Crow on the NYC recording I saw.

Nice choice Pete. Bill Ward was a phenomenal drummer. Easily one of the best of his era which features a ton of great drummers. He was a huge part of the Black Sabbath sound and his breaks and fills were fantastic. There are a number of BS songs where Bill Ward could have been arrested for murder as he was killing those drums!!! Very technical with lots of swinging jazz influenced playing, not just heavy drum thunder. Very underrated.

Number 6 is a guy who, despite playing with one of the World's biggest bands for 50 years and having a decent solo career, is never mentioned in any 'best of...' list. But this is favourites and Roger Taylor of Queen has always been a favourite of mine.
From the proto thrash of Modern Times Rock N Roll and Stone Cold Crazy, through heavy stuff like Son And Daughter, Ogre Battle, Dead On Time, Hammer To Fall, through pop, blues and almost jazz stuff to their funk/disco songs, Roger can play it all and more besides. He's an excellent singer and a great songwriter. With John Deacon, he's probably the most under rated rhythm sections ever. Everybody talks about Freddie's voice and showmanship and Brian's instantly recognisable guitar work, but Roger and John provide the space for them to show what they can do. Recommendations? Really, anything. Queen's early stuff is what everybody here will be familiar with, but the Live At The Rainbow 74 live album shows just how heavy they were back in the day. If you are unfamiliar with his solo work, check out Fun In Space, Strange Frontier and his "other band" The Cross, although, he didn't play drums with them that often. He was singer/guitarist, mainly. And I got through that without mentioning Bohe...

My #6 pick is an American musician who achieved international fame as the drummer of the rock duo the White Stripes. Though she typically performed backing vocals for the band, she occasionally sang lead for one song on each album, including "In the Cold, Cold Night" and "Passive Manipulation." I'm talking about Meg White. White began playing the drums on Bastille Day in 1997, and she formed the White Stripes with then-husband Jack White that same year. Their 2001 breakthrough album, White Blood Cells, brought them international fame. Her simultaneous solo ventures include acting, appearing in the 2003 film Coffee and Cigarettes and a 2006 episode of The Simpsons, and briefly modeling. While the band were on tour in support of their 2007 album, Icky Thump, she suffered a bout of acute anxiety, and the remaining dates of the tour were canceled. The band disbanded in 2011 following a lengthy hiatus and she ceased performing.
White is a key artist of the 2000s garage rock revival, and her style of drumming has been called "minimalistic" and "simplistic" by critics. Reviews of her playing were initially ambivalent, but it has earned retrospective praise and continues to be discussed. She is also noted for her elusive media image, calling herself "very shy" and reclusive. With the White Stripes, she won a Brit Award and six Grammy Awards. In 2015, Rolling Stone included her on their "100 Greatest Drummers of All Time" list. She and Jack were nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, but were not inducted.Beginning in 2006, White used a pair of Paiste 14" Signature Medium Hi-Hats, a 19" Signature Power Crash, and a 22" 2002 Ride.[96][102] On the Icky Thump tour, the bass drum head design was switched to a button inspired by the Pearlies clothing Jack and Meg wore for the album cover. She also used Remo and Ludwig drumheads, various percussion instruments and Vater drumsticks.
White's Pearl Export bass drum-complete with original peppermint-painted bass drum that she used with the band's first show-and the Pearly Queen outfit she wore in the photos for the Icky Thump album, were featured in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame "Women Who Rock" exhibition.
Albums- Elephant, White Blood Cells and Get Behind Me Satan
Song- Seven Nation Army Seven Nation Army" played a significant role in the White Stripes' popularity. A writer for Rolling Stone described it as a "career-changing hit",[29] and NME's Daniel Martin viewed the song as the White Stripes' "defining tune", having sparked the band's transition "from their garage rock beginnings to an entirely new level of acclaim".[3] In addition, "Seven Nation Army" contributed to the garage rock revival movement,[8] becoming the first song in the genre to reach number one on Billboard's Modern Rock chart.[73][note 1] After its initial run on music charts, the song-especially its riff-grew in popularity as a result of its usage in sports. In 2012, Deadspin's Alan Siegel described the "riff-turned-anthem" as "ubiquitous",[2] and according to The New Yorker's Alec Wilkinson, the riff "might be the second-best-known guitar phrase in popular music, after the one from 'Satisfaction'".[74] Erik Adams of The A.V. Club attributed the song's popularity to its riff's "simplicity"-a characteristic that he remarked makes the song "instantly familiar" and "instantly memorized"[75]-and Nate Sloan said that the four notes following the riff's first note create a feeling of "urgency that makes [the riff] much more memorable".[15]
The song has also appeared in various other media. On May 9, 2014, during the celebration of the 825th Hamburg Port Anniversary, "Seven Nation Army" was played using the horns of cruise ship MSC Magnifica as it entered the harbor.[76] An instrumental cover of the song arranged by Ramin Djawadi was included in a 2018 episode of HBO television series Westworld.[77] The song was performed during the final task of The Amazing Race 31 at Hart Plaza in Detroit.According to Alan Siegel of Deadspin, "Seven Nation Army"'s riff is "an organic part of sports culture".[2] The riff is commonly used in sports audience's chants, in which each note is usually sung using the "oh" sound.[15] This phenomenon has its roots in a UEFA Champions League football match in Italy in October 2003, during which fans of Belgium's Club Brugge KV began singing the riff in a game against Italy's A.C. Milan. They continued the chant after Club Brugge KV striker Andrés Mendoza scored a goal. Club Brugge KV won the game, and the song subsequently became the team's "unofficial sports anthem"Current WWE commentator Pat McAfee used the song as an entrance theme, including for his match against Austin Theory at WrestleMania 38.

Unlike Pete, I am a BIG fan of the first 2 solo albums by Bill. "Ward One: Along The Way", and "When the Bough Breaks". They happen to be on my desert island disc list. I believe some of Bill's songs on those albums capture the soul and spirit of the first 8 Sabbath albums more than any of the other band members' solo albums. Enjoying this series, Pete!

Again, I always fall back on those drummers musicians/bands in general, who I grew up with.
Music was a massive part of my growing up, and my father drummed, and his choice of music helped to define my tastes.
From my youth, Ringo Starr, John Bonham, Peter Chris, Keith Moon.
My teen years were all about Ian Paice, Bill Ward, Clive Burr, and then Nicko McBrain.
For favourites...Stewart Copeland ranks in my top three. Mick Fleetwood's work on The Visitor, which echoed Copeland's Rythmatist. Neil Peart, again, top three. Nick Mason more for his entire body of work with Pink Floyd. Bill Bruford for Yes, and King Crimson.
Phil Collins work if he had only drummed for Robert Plant, would be enough.
That's fourteen....I need to look at my big band, Jazz, and more Prog to delve deeper.

Good morning (afternoon, evening or night), Pete. A great SOT choice. Personal pick today? The band carried the name of its co-founder, the American drummer Alexander Arthur "Alex Van Halen. The original band and debut album were lightning in a bottle and Alex was a key component of the sound. Perhaps ironically, he and his brother Edward both studied classical piano and then Eddie took up the drums and Alex took up the electric guitar. Obviously time switched those roles. Another one of those drummers whose name quickly popped into mind for this list. Favorite albums for today are all Van Halen band albums - the eponymous debut, Van Halen II and Women & Children First. The third album picked because it includes a favorite drum work of Alex on the great Everybody Wants Some!! Thanks, Pete. Looking forward to your next selection.

    6. Stewart Copeland (The Police)
I don't know much about Copeland's work with Curved Air on their two worst albums in 1975-76 before they imploded, but as proficient as he was, one never would have guessed he'd be a superstar within a few years. Here is a case where punk most definitely saved a prog musician's ass, inspiring him to innovate and create a unique, groundbreaking style fusing reggae, punk and new wave. "Walking on the Moon."

Supernaut!!!-Beyond incredible n also Wicked World of the 1st album which Bill shows his Phenomenal Jazz chops. He really was half along w/ Geezer as one on the Ultimate Rhythm Sections in the history of Rock. Warning is An Awesome example of that as well as Behind the Wall of Sleep where Hip Hop was born! #6 KEITH MOON - The Who Hi Friends Today remember Keith Moon. And the great power and finesse he brought to the stages of his drumming. And added alot to each song the band did. The 3 albums well WHOS NEXT. TOMMY QUADROPHENIA. So many great performances everywhere in studio and live and so on. I was lucky to have seen the The Who in 71 at Hara Arena Dayton and to remember so well. Audio boot album made I have. HMs so many of Baba O Reilly , Won't Get Foled Again Behind Blue Eyes and so much on Tommy too. The Acid Queen. Pinball Wizard We're Not Gonna Take It The Real Me Love Reign O'ver Me and so many off Quadrophenia. One of the best and early ones of Keith to describe as to what he could do and showcase himself is on The track I CAN SEE FOR MILES. From the album The Who Sell Out that I have and the track is on other albums and comps I would have as to The Who. A hit single then in the 60s. And well the rolls and all he gives the song with Roger on the vocals Pete On Guitar and John on bass it as one of the old rock staples of rock classics that stands the test of time of The Who was and would so be for many tears to come RIP KEITH . Thanks for the memories. to John Entwistle as well.
Take care folks. Love hugs and prayers. 🎶🎶🥁❤🤗🙏☮

Hello everyone, hope we all had a great weekend. Back to Monday again, and day 25 of drummers is here already, and my pick today - sadly no longer with us - is often overlooked as a technician because of the seemingly rough and ready nature of the band he propelled with such unbridled enthusiasm for so long...
    PHIL"thy Animal" TAYLOR of MOTORHEAD
With a technique combining the attitude of punk, the madness of Moon and the power of Bonham, he combined with Lemmy and Fast Eddie Clarke to produce some of the most important and influential rock music of their age. Kudos to Mickey Dee for his time in the band, but Phil's oeuvre is where it was at for me...
    3 albums from his tenure:
    Overkill
    Ace Of Spades
    Orgasmatron
Track of choice: "Snaggletooth" from No Remorse
