The insertion sequence at 0:55 (and some others later) were filmed at the Short Brothers and Harland airfield in the Harbour Estate Belfast adjacent to the Harland and Wolff shipyard. The cranes around the dry dock can be seen at about 1:22, including Goliath which was completed in 1969, but not its twin Sampson which was completed in 1974. The Castlereagh Hills can can seen through the murk in the background. The airfield was shared with the military and was RNAS Sydenham for a while. You could see Royal Navy Buccaneer bombers lined up behind the wire fence when driving the Sydenham bypass. It’s now George Best Belfast City Airport. And apparently slates are regularly blown off the roofs of the inner city houses beneath the flight path that were built for the shipyard workers of East Belfast during the Victorian manufacturing heyday.
Other nicknames- The flying milk carton. The box that other planes are delivered in. It's a fun plane to do civilian skydives from, you can throw a 10 person chunk out the door and still keep the CG in balance. And if you know the plane well, the third seat on copilot side is a favorite for the ladies.
That tailgate exit is so much fun, i did a couple jumps with 25 people out of one! Insane experience trying to push someone out that is running toward the exit, and being pushed by the guy behind
My dad was in Oman 🇴🇲 in the 70’s. He said they were effective and versatile, even used as a “bomber”. I have a couple of photos. I was stationed at Aldergrove in the early 80’s, the Skyvan was up against the Islander to replace the Beaver. Sadly, the wrong airframe won.
i was in Oman in the 70s with airwork services and was lucky to be picked to be the flight engineer on a ferry flight from shorts in Belfast back to Oman i may have known your dad
My ex's first flight was on the civillian version from Stanstead. There was an Anatonov, is it that one ? No. There were F27 , is it that one? No. The look on her face when we went around the rest and the Little Frog was sitting there.
Someone commented it's engine - props are very noisy. With current technology it should be possible to make a much stealthier version if this tiny cargo plane. Could come in handy in tight situations.
i have all these info sheets for the sd 330 from farnboro 76 wonder if they have value? and loads on alpha jets .We went runni round grabbing allsorts cas it was last day and closing the booths inside .

Well preserved film with excellent film footage and sound.
Reminds me of my US Army SOF jumps from the Sherpa
Ah yes, the Flying Ticonderoga #2 Pencil
When flown in anger, it sure could stop and go.

Largest selling UK commercial aircraft since 1945 with 496 sold to 77 operators around the world .
Makes an excellent paratroop dropping aircraft.......rear ramp is exceptional for rear jumping.....good to insert special operations troops.....!
280 feet. I wonder how many Sky vans we could have had for the price of one Osprey. Probably a hundred.
Short Brothers is my favourite aerospace company. M.
