Did this announcer do any prep at all?
"You guys are awesome ... you've definitely brought the best capes we've ever had at the studio here... what is that instrument that is blowing my mind? Did you make it?" "Its almost like a lyre." "I have never heard Ethiopian music like this before." "Do people like you in your home country?" "Is most Ethiopian music about love?"

delipark Its a krar or kirar, its a type of lyre, I enjoy the instrument I have tried it before its amazing.

Statoil, delipark knows that. He was commenting on how unlearned the KEXP announcer was.

Hehe. Tbf, I think hosts sometimes must feign ignorance a little bit to prompt basic information for the benefit of an uneducated, unworldly audience. This channel and the coastlines are obviously very hip and appreciate different things.
Most Americans definitely have not heard of the krar. We're not bad people, it's that our media and govt purposely misinforms or leaves us in the dark.

The female vocalist sounds slightly off-key. Is it supposed to be that way? Is it a microtonal thing? How do they tune the krar?
