    THE INSTRUMENT
Nathaniel is performing on grand piano by circle of Johann Andreas Stein, South Germany or Vienna, last quarter of the 18th century. Stein invented a type of piano that dominated Viennese instrument building from the 1780s for more than half a century. His daughter Nannette, who married Andreas Streicher, became one of Vienna’s most important figures and this instrument bears close resemblance to the diagrams in a manual she published in 1801. Mozart played and recommended Stein’s instruments.
