    I was lucky enough to see Hoyt live at The Great American Music Hall, in S.F. He had such a wonderful stage presence and personality. His vocal range was outstanding and he had such GREAT phrasing. He is greatly missed. As an interesting side note, he wrrote and recorded the original jingle when McDonald's introduced the Big Mac (which he mentioned at the show.

    I was working at a recording studio back in the mid 80s... One day the owner of the studio asked me if I'd like to meet Mae Axton. He had already set up an appointment with her to seek her advice regarding his career in the music business. She kindly welcomed us into her home one summer afternoon and we talked for 2 or 3 hours. Toward the end of the conversation she mentioned that she had 2 sons... Hoyt the famous singer-songwriter and John, an attorney. She said that John would never have been happy as a singer-songwriter and that Hoyt would never have been happy as an attorney. So... her advice was that every person should follow whatever their heart tells them to do.

      I guess this is good advice. But what of the dreamer that wants to pursue an unrealistic deadend.

    • @Santiago-ov8gc
      @Santiago-ov8gc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@notbraindead7298 That's a valid risk I suppose but there's also a risk in playing it safe. John Lennon's aunt Mimi told him, 'The guitar is alright as a hobby, John, but you'll never make a living at it.' If he would have listened to her then the Beatles might never have existed.

    • @notbraindead7298
      @notbraindead7298 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Santiago-ov8gc I agree with you basically. I would not try to discourage a dreamer. But if it's your child or sibling it's painful to watch them waste a portion of their life. Using the Beatles as an example is like "what are the chances lightening will strike in the same place 4 times!"

    A friend who worked with me for several years was a friend of Hoyt. My friend was a pharmacist in Branson while Hoyt was there. My pharmacist friend explained his medicines to him each time Hoyt got a new one. And he helped him keep them straight. Anyway Hoyt started to come buy to the worksite and ask him to go out for coffee once in a while. He had high regard for Hoyt and grieved when he died.

      We used to go to Missoula every summer where my daughter was in a performing arts camp. We always made the short trip to Hamilton to see Hoyt's grave. The first time we went down there, the workers showed us where it was, they seemed to have an idea that's who we were there to see....

    I think I've mentioned it before- I grew up listening to Hoyt Axton. My mom was a fan. Saw him at the Oregon State Fair in '78.
    Love his music.
    Thank you, Lee 🙏

    You've given me another reason to watch/listen to the Grammys tonight.
    I had the opportunity to meet Hoyt Axton in 1973 in Vancouver at The Egress coffeehouse. He was every bit as big-hearted as he seemed. Thanks for reminding everyone what a wonderful singer/songwriter he was. Thanks for the wonderful music by Hoyt. (youtube ads aside)
    I'll be watching for you on the Grammys. 😉
    On another note, I was saddened to learn of the passing of bluegrass fiddle player Roland White. I first heard his playing on Country Gazette's album 'Don't Give Up Your Day Job', on which YOU appeared! Damn son, your career has permeated so much of the music that I've enjoyed throughout my life. Too many albums to count.

    I saw him several times at the Golden Bear! There was a mural painting on one of the walls there (I think it was titled "The Folk Singer") I always thought it was modeled after Hoyt!
    He was a bigger than life character - already a legend in my High School days. in 67 one of the guys in my school performed "The Pusher" for the Hootenanny audition (He had to settle for Greenback Dollar for the show)
    I saw Renee with Hoyt at The Troubadour doing Boney Fingers on Jimmy Buffett's first early days - Mike Utley was his only accompanist. I mentioned some of this on post #418 (Ironically the day after Leland's first vaccine shot! - ah, "the good old days"!) ;-)

    😲😲. Took us 3 weeks to get to it, but what a video! We always knew you were a rock star, but you were a Rock Star!!! You were a drum major!!!! We figured you'd been in orchestra and not matching band. I did one year in tall flag (behind the band) and 2 in "ID Squad" (in front of the band with the device bearing the name of the school + dance routines for the half time shows). They'd send us to camp at Loyola Marymount U in the summers. Never made it to the premier small flag group because I couldn't make the weight limit at audition final year. More time for academic decathlon and editing the poetry journal....
    Hoyt Axton was a familiar face to 70's era tv watchers, so this was a great memory jogger (haven't heard those tunes in dogs' years).

    On TH-cam there's a Hoyt Axton-Linda Ronstadt video in which they sing Lion In Winter, and Hoyt forgets the name of the tune when he tries to introduce it. Reportedly he fell in love with Linda, and wrote the song "I Collect Hearts" about her.

    Hoyt had a very sonorous voice which kinda raised his songs to a higher level. In the '90s, I had Hoyt doing an a capella gospel song on an old analog answering machine....."Blessed savior..... lead and guide us." There was a lot more to Hoyt than met the eye. His mama was a songwriter and teacher. HIs first cousin was David Boren, Democratic governor and U.S. Senator from Oklahoma.

    I say! I always remenber Hoyt A for his part in the Film, Gremlins. His voice is in the same cubby hole as Randy Travis.

    If you look up "stage presence" in the dictionary you'll find Hoyt's picture. Nobody you can name owned the stage like this entertainer. The first note he struck would bring down the house, EVERY TIME.

      The only way I know is to subscribe to You Tube premium. I did it a while ago. No ads. Love it.

    I swear the more you tube you watch the less ads you get......Mine turn on for a second and then goes right to my video of choice. When I first found you tube during beginning of pandemic they would interrupt every 20 seconds.
