    From superior view, he is very streamlined, great extension of the upper extremities reaching forward and the body rotation and alignment is perfect. Amazing arms flexibilty... great video.

    This is the best swim technique video. I can´t get enough of watching it in 0.25 playback speed. I like to study every nuance of the stroke, and each time I learn a little more. Then I go to the pool (like this morning) and focus on a particular aspect of the stroke for every 50 meters. Today I was noticing the timing between the hands as one spears and the other pushes back. The power hand is just about finishing the catch (at 45 degrees from the water surface) as the spearing arm enters. Sorry if this sounds really dumb since I´m a newbie.

    A truely great video. Thx for posting. Sun Yang technique is so efficient. Indeed, he does not kick a lot and that's why he is capable of spearing lots of energy for the last 100-150 meters. If you take a closer look at his kicking technique, it can be seen that when he takes a breath, he does not kick at all. And when he returns to streamline position, then he kicks but it looks like it was not a powerfull kick. Another interesting fact is that he permorms 26-27 cycles per 50 meters comparing to Cochrane's 35-36. It is so incredibly efficient. It is worth noting that when Sun Yang was beating world record at Olimpics in 2012 he swum lat 50 meters faster than any other swimmer compiting in 200m freestyle final. Thats absolutely astonishing. I hope that his height is natural and he was not helped by medicine to get so tall.

    • @hb950322
      @hb950322 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      He does a 4-beat kick, which in fact is a 6-beat on one and a 2-beat on the other side. His kick-timing is very precise. One kick on the right side helps him turning on the left side to breathe on the right, while on the left side he seems to hold a little bit longer out in front and the three kicks here are helping him not dropping his legs and creating some propulsion. The single "breathing" kick is considerable stronger / more accented than the other kicks. In the final of the races we can see clearly, that he is a very strong 6-beat kicker, too.

      From the place where he was born this height is expected. Just like Canada it is north part of China. There is a old local saying, being short might get buried by snow. He is also very focused on the route choice so very rare you see him off the center line.

    • @ericwan4501
      @ericwan4501 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +jaksosna why do u think that he needs medicine to be that tall? Many swimmers are as tall as him like cesar cielo, Florent manaudou, Nathan Adrian, Matt grevers, Agnel....

    • @jaksosna
      @jaksosna 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Eric Wan I don't think that his height is unnatural, but it is not obvious. I just hope so as many doctors and coaches have been saying that at present it is possible to boost someone's height even by genetic modifications. I just hope he is not the case so he can be an example for young tall aspiring swimmers to practise and aiming at biggest prizes. Olimpics included:) Cheerz!

    Unlike other swimmers who expend a lot of energy pushing water back, Sun Yang uses his arms as anchors in the water to pull himself forward which is further aided by hip driven momentum driving his body forward, resulting in a smooth style with relatively little water turbulence.

    • @FalcoBikes
      @FalcoBikes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So water turns into solids or a hook in Sun's lane??? Seems like semantics to me. It's water, and he is fast. Sure. But pull vs push??? come on .

    His technique which minimizes resitance (Sun Yang glides a lot), is in sharp contract with brutal force technique (Ian thorpe's freestyle comes to mind, he kicks a lot like there is shark or something behind him). It's hard to tell which one is better depending on swimming distance, but Sun yang def. saves a lot of energy...

    • @Unmoved12345
      @Unmoved12345 9 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Grande Garanhao Ian Thorpe was a sprinter; Sun Yang a distance swimmer. Two different kicking techniques are involved.

    • @hoangle2897
      @hoangle2897 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      range of thorpe's event is from 100 to 800 free (obviously his best is 400, after that is 200, 800 and 100 respectively), meanwhile Sun Yang's range is from 200 to 1500.
      Anyway they are versatile freestylers
      Thorpe got combo medals at 100-200-400 and Sun got medals 200-400-1500 at olympics. If 800 free had been added at olympics, both would have got gold medals.

    • @hoangle2897
      @hoangle2897 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Grande Garanhao: Thorpe is middle-distance freestyler not sprinter meanwhile Sun had been ever long distance freestyler but now he is choked along distances increased.He cannot get back his shape in 1500. Sun now is the best in 200 free

    • @peterstone172
      @peterstone172 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually, Ian Thorpe had a very efficient gliding stroke. There is not a lot of difference between the two swimmers in terms of technique. Both almost catch up on their breathing stroke. This video is of a 1500m swim, so it's silly to compare this with Thorpe swimming a 200m. I would say Yang and Thorpe have more similarities in their technique than they do differences. Hackett and Yang have even more similarities, probably because they both had the same Australian coach.

    He seems to have two major kicks coupled with two small ones in between. For instance, as his left arm pushes back he kicks with his left foot. Then he does two small kicks followed by another main kick by the right foot as the his right arm pushes back. His kicks are perfectly synchronized with his pulls.

We are proud to have him represent us, as Japan now has one of the most successful TI programs globally.

    I am no expert but it seems to me that he's barely dragging his feet for balance and to save energy for the final 100 meters in his distance races. Btw, is Sun faster than Cochrane because of his superior technique or does a couple of inches in height have something to do with it as well.
