I was so expecting something like the Hangman's athletics check immediately after "I gave you a name! Okay bike, go get them" to be with disadvantage.

I love how there's a running gag of Brennan trying to speed run Gilear's death only for players to wrentch his soul from the inky depths of bottomless pit of the 9 hells

I mean, the players keep bringing him around despite him having the constitution wet paper. Brennan is speed running nothing. It’s on the players that gilear keeps dying over and over and over.
Running gags are the best, and I have several in my games as well.
Years ago, my group became rather insistent that I always have proper names for towns, NPCs, etc. They just couldn't roll with it; had to have a name for the town, no matter how detailed the layout and buildings were. Well, I got so flustered by this that I ended up just blurting out the first thing that came to mind. And so it was that the travelers eventually arrived at the town of Little Consequence. Because it literally doesn't matter. What's in a name, anyway?
I eventually just started doing it by default, because it became clear to me that this was going to be a thing from now on. When the party finally went to the coast to hire a ship for overseas travel, I narrated the scene by saying "You come at last upon the seaside city of Starboard Port."
Wish I could remember some of the others I came up with. One of my NPCs had an alchemically-imbued perfume she would wear that gave her a bonus to seducing others. It was recorded on her sheet as "...a seductive, poppy-seed scent, mixed by the Lady Caraway of Sesame."
He _is_ the Chosen One, after all
I love how aggressively proud Seacaster is of Fabian. He never questions Fabian's sheet dancing, just moves immediately into "look at my son, he's so cool!" Bill Seacaster is a very morally questionable man but he will support his son

To be fair, a dance fight WAS setup up.
It sort of bugs me... not that part, that was good. But the setups that are always there from the beginning to "circle back..." a lot of times it feels too convenient as a way to boost players' abilities.
For example, Fig inheriting ridiculous powers, versus Fabian getting the Hangman. One feels like scripting, the other feels more like a decision that never had to be made, but wound up a good investment by a player wondering "is this possible?"

It’s a good thing they chose not to kill Ragh, otherwise he’d be fighting against them in this battle, not with them. Bud came a long way.
They did kill him, (he failed his death saves) but they revivified him.
Can we get a Gilear death count after they graduate? 😂
I cried with laughter when Riz said: "Remember me, Daybreak? I shoot him." Such awesome delivery.
it's not a very obvious parallel, and I'm pretty sure it's not on purpose, but there's something so beautiful about riz throwing wild theories around willy nilly with kalina and just being WAY off to immediately clicking what's going on when with his dad

His isn't the only card on the table. It is possible several or all of them have them. When they got the pirate sending spell where curses don't count, Emily held up a card that said the same thing.

I want to see fan art of this specific episode because the fight in The Goldenrod as it flies upsidedown through hell with nearly all of the most important characters of season 1 is the coolest fucking thing.
And spoiler side-note: I absolutely imagine that if copyright wasn't a thing the Bond motif would've played during Pok's reveal as an undercover angel.

Brennan dating three of the PCs brings me so much joy. Especially because he made the characters just to date the PCs, technically not Ayde but you know.
I don’t think he made Aelwyn to date Fabian either, just thought it would be a funny gag to have her kiss him, just to show how wild and out of control she was being. And then Lou ran with it.

Allowing romance is a tricky bit of human interaction. Almost none of my players have been able to handle it with any measure or maturity or separation of Character Versus Player.
Rule No. One: You are not your character. Your character is not you. What happens to your character happens in game, not in real life. But people let it stay with them.
I've had to essentially veto relationships in order to prevent players getting the wrong idea about each other...or the GM. It gets weird very quickly for my group. I wonder what rules were put into place here that prevented it with them.
@@OldWayArtisans everyone on D20 are trained actors and comedians, so seperation of character and person just comes more naturally.

@@timothylawrence8929 it's capped at 20 for PCs, but it's not unusual for powerful NPCs or monsters to have stats above 20 (theirs are capped at 30)
It’s d&d. anything can happen! You are only limited by the rules the DM sets forth.
The pure excitement from the players with the reveal at the end is so cute

I just want to compliment how cinematic this episode was. I never created such a crystal clear image in my head of the events unfolding as today. Chef's kiss!
Brennan's ability to manage so many NPCs at once, and STILL find the time to pay enough attention to his players that they didn't get bored or lose focus...is legendary.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I hope I'm lucky enough to find a GM half this good for a local game.
For those liking this reply, I have an update.
I've started using some of Brennan's broad-spectrum policies and methodologies in my own monthly game, and it's WORKING.
One of my players is on the spectrum. A lot. His focus issues tend to lead us on "rabbit trails" that last for literally hours. But instead of ditching the player, I tried making it about them and only being there as a framework to tell the story. My guys...he didn't leave the couch but to get coffee or use the restroom. I had his attention for the entire session, and it wasn't just a couple hours. All day is how we do it.
Since watching D20, I've begun paring down the number of NPCs I use with the party, as well as the number that I have actively doing background plot. I can't believe the difference it has made.
Mr. Mulligan...whatever it is you're doing...KEEP IT UP.
His narration of Ayda casting a huge spell to flood hell with ocean water was just awesome, I'm definitely going back to re-watch it!!
@@anime2012 And it's so in-character as well. I can definately see her going all out for Fig because of a misunderstanding. She is her father's daughter after all!
Lou plays Fabian so well. He reverts a little from his fun-loving, "I believe in you. Spring Break!" new persona and gets more debonair and aggressive in front of his father. It feels like a part of Fabian misses being a pirate swashbuckler but it's played almost subconsciously, just a subtle change in Fabian's demeanor.

This is the best episode of both seasons of fantasy high imo. It's one of the coolest combats in all of dimension 20
I just wish it was a season with my models (either physically or digitally both have pros and cons) so we could see them in full detail.

Honestly, I don't mind the lack of minis and sets. It makes it feel much less strict and regimented and more like a normal ass game of DnD.

I have to say, Dimension 20's Intrepid Heroes has to be one of my all time favorite entertainment in any category. It's feelgood, it's scary as fuck at times, it's engaging and terrifying and absolutely fantastically funny. It doesn't matter how my day has been, it could've been the worst day of all time and I just can't stop smiling when watching this.
100% seriously, the next Golden Record we send into space should be a GoldenRod and contain at least one of the seasons of D20 for aliens to see just how fantastic humanity can be, it might tip the scales for us and make us look pretty good.
I think it would make them have faith in us and our creativity! Also, kudos on the Goldenrod wordplay!

I love how Allie just fully has Pete's spell cards mixed in on accident with their cleric spells. They're just like "Shield" laugh about it and then immediately after "Dimension Door" again so confident.
My fav moment is how Seacaster blasts Gilear and kinda just accepts him right after... like his grudge is settled and he knew the kids would revive him so he just wanted his shot in.

Ayda has 7th level spells so is either 13th or 14th level
My admiration of Ayda Agefort was immediate, but not for the same reason. She's socially stunted, blunt, gruff, and brutally honest, but isn't mean about it. There's something quirky and adorable about somebody so forthright and so willing to eat dirt in the face of attempting to befriend others. I found her to be "unapologetically pure" and I love the places it led her.
Of course...the wonderful social tangles it landed her in were a contributing factor. ^_^
@OldWayArtimisans I'm pretty sure she's coded to be autistic in some way. I relate to her so much, but her confusion around social norms could just be because she's basically raised herself and lives on a barbaric pirate ship island

It's been a while since I watched but I believe the cover makes it +1, not sure if that's the same as magical. Either way it's been a while since the first season when this was recorded and IIRC they recorded a whole different campaign in between so a lot of that stuff is forgotten about. It took half the season to remember that Fabian could have healed the Hangman with his motor wax from season 1 all along.
Its like the universe knows how skilled Murph is as a player, and has to give him shit rolls to nerf him 😅

Y'know... I thought the Legends of Avantris Once Upon A Witchlight campaign was the most chaotic I'd ever seen, but I am now realizing Dimension 20 Fantasy High is true chaos. It comes to these characters like breathing. I need Torbek and Chuckles the Clown to guest star for an episode in Junior Year cuz I need to see how absolutely crazed it can truly get. Also Jester from Critical Roll. Utter chaos crew. I KNOW Fig and Jester would be buddy buddy and Fabian, Riz, and Gorgug would legit be terrified of Chuckles. And have Jawbone and Torbek become best 'bud🍃' buds, if you catch my meaning.

I haven't watched till the end just yet, so I don't know, weather this will happen, but banishing the revived Gilear would have been such a interesting idea. I am surprised that it crossed my mind while Kristin revived him. Looking up the specifics of the spell Banishment I am even more surprised, that it had actually worked. It would have sent him to his Native plain and he wouldn't have returned als long as Kristin would have managed to hold concentration for a minute or voluntarily ended the spell before. There would have not been a necessity to hide him in a safe place.
I wonder though weather Brennan would have put Gilear back into the village (the place where Gilear left his home plane) or into their hometown (where he has his home) or a random place.
I mean obviously whatever they do instead is a great story as well, I just had such a 'think outside the box moment', that I felt like I have to share it.
I think Brennan would have probably made gilear teleport somewhere random but somehow come back more miserable than ever
