I started what I thought was my lawn care business this year, but I've been booked for three months with landscaping jobs, with almost no lawn cut customers. So now I'm a landscaping company.
This past weekend I stumbled into a pool-prep job for a great profit, since the homeowner needed it done asap. Worked all weekend through Tuesday am. Made my entire next week a stressful headache, as it pushed my booked landscaping job back a day & a half.
This weekend, we're staying out of the field & working on our own landscaping. Lesson learned: take weekends off! The money will still be there waiting to be made on Monday. You're not living if you're working seven days a week & ignoring your family & home.

I am new and it makes sense why you wouldn't charge the same price because over time cost of materials change as well as labor costs. I guess my questions is is that the reason the quote is no longer valid? I just want to make sure I am understanding and doing things right going forward.

I’ve been watching several of your videos for the past few days. That one video stuck out. The one about going out and doing it. Bills and rent need to be payed etc. so what I do. Yesterday, Thursday I walked into Home Depot and bought my supplies just under $150. Then this morning after my primary job (part time trucker) I decided to go for it and walk into a big time gas station over here in Texas and spoke with the manager. ... well, I freaking got my first job on the first try!! Lol then drove 30 minutes away to another location and spoke with the manager there. Was told they need someone to clean the windows. Will speak with owner tomorrow at 10am. He also owns a whole bunch of gas stations...... This all took place in 3 days since watching your videos! Thanks for the inspiration!

NO is a complete sentence, I’ve been at this self employment for close to 30 years and when you do good work and treat customers right your demand will increase. 5 years back the constant long list of projects I had said yes to brought me to my breaking point where I just wanted my business to become a simpler less demanding stress, so the era of NO began. I put simple guardrails on what I will do, then stopped any request that was beyond the narrow yes zone. I ONLY mow lawns and plow driveways in the winter. I ONLY work within a 5 mile circle of my home.
People still ask me to do many of the services that I used to do, I did painting, carpentry, tree work, pressure washing, every other odd job under the sun, but a simple NO, I’m semi-retired now keeps my life simple. It is inevitable that your business will take over your life, but it’s your business not someone else telling you what they need you to do. I spent 30 years building this, now I;m trying to figure out how to get my life back for travel with my wife.....no is the path!!!

One way I feel more comfortable about setting those expectations or being able drop everything and put my family firs is getting as many “reviews” online as possible. This gives me peace of mind

Why would taking the whole day off be bad? What's the point if your working all the time, I just tell the customer that I am working that day when in reality I'm on my motorcycle enjoying my life. People want you to tell them your schedule, so I make one. Working 24/7 is a slave to your business. Give yourself free time to do other things. That was the whole point of owning a business to get away from the 9-5

I really love this question if you listen to "money master the game" by tony robbins if its not too late and you have 20 years to invest then there are retirement plans out there for people on minimum wage. there is something called compounding interest that can really help. invest in the stock market cannabis is a new product and once the US fully decriminalizes it in the next few election cycles the prices will explode they are already hit their bottom and are on their way up. two companies I really like are NIO and HEXO one nio is a chinese tesla basically and hexo is a colorado cannabis company partnered with coors brewing company right now nio''s stock price is like 6.50 and hexo's stock price around 1.00 good luck.

Good advice. I have been doing this for 18 years and I still say yes knowing deep down it is a long shot. I always think I can squeeze something in but like you said other things happen and it usually doesn't work out. So if you promise something you can't deliver the bad word travels a lot quicker than the good. I think you need that extra free day in case something goes wrong. I still have a problem saying NO cause they want to give you money. but the flip side is if you don't deliver you look way worse than if you just were honest. I think this is the biggest problem in the business. People don't realize how crazy hectic this business is. If you let it become that way.

Keith thank you for all your video's they do help so many people. I have been landscaping for about 20 years now and like you I still struggle with the simple things. Plus I think landscaping is far harder than we realise. The vast amount of knowledge and tools and experience required is crazy. I know a university graduate that calls herself a manager. She works in a spinning class place in London. She earns a packet of money! - all she really does is let people in and wipe the sweat off the seats. She probably earns twice as much as me and yet I'm braking my back and stressed out she has it easy. No capital outlay or liabilities. Very odd how things get valued. My plan is to get out of landscaping asap - just need an idea.. I'll always love it but I'm tired of the fight to be honest. Much easier money to be made out there.

@@Chinothebambino Believe me I understand where you are coming from. It crossed my mind. But the reality of controlling mosquitoes has to be on a strict schedule due to the reproductive cycle. Also, why I only do season contracts is to reduce the possibility of mosquitoes building a resistance to the pesticides. I'm sure other companies will do a one and done, but I want the consistency for cashflow, scheduling, and being in the area all the time to pick up additional clients. Once the neighbors report back, likely thy will do a season long contract.
