Hey john you could just get a can of fix a flat if your that concerned of a flat tire. They make a mess or your rim though when you go to change the tire
Go tubeless... and get the jerky flat fix for bikes they are small enough to stick into the handle bar.... and carry a bike pump.. I MTB and it's been a savior...👌🏻
just an fyi, the only way a squirrel would have rabies is if another animal gave it to them, and its insanely rare for a squirrel to carry. It IS however VERY common for squirels to becomes very tame very fast when humans feed them. Maybe there arent as many squirels over there so it seems weird but on the east coast, especially in the northern areas its not weird to see a squirrel that close.

At home off work with covid watching your stuff, makes me want to buy a sur-ron myself but its a lot of money for someone who doesn't live in a very bike friendly city. Wondering if you reccomend them even to someone who usually doesnt ride much anymore.
To your question - for 4k, you can get a nice 150cc+ honda/yamaha scooter, that is probably best way to spend the money for commuting realistically. A car like you say is comfort or whatever but slow, costly. Yes its safe but in LA you have such nice weather and traffic is relatively slow, so its pretty good place to ride 2 wheel stuff.

You were talking about people having corn stores in their neighborhood and that you didn't know nobody from New York. But you felt the corner store in the neighborhood brings a sense of community to the area.
Personally, I think surrons are much better commuters than cars. These, even at full speed are not nearly as dangerous for pedestrians as cars and require minimal infrastructure. The real problem is other cars, and you kinda need a metal box to feel safe against those in the US.

Try carrying a small hand air pump with you. So if you do get something in your tire you leave it in and keep it inflated as much as possible while you limp it home. If you ride on a flat tire it will roast the sidewalls and could pop off the rim and damage that.
