I saw this play here in Hungary, and Pasha was my all-time favourite character. Now I see this video and OMG I'm fangirling for this boy :D He's really amazing!
Do you know what happens next?? I´ve been trying to understand in what part does the song "When the music played" sung by lara happens? Im going to sing it and i can´t find it´s context :(
I'll upload more. Stay tuned.
OMG thank u soooo much!!!
My computer went through a reset, and I'm going through a lot of stuff in my own life, so I don't really have much time taking care my TH-cam channel. Here's what happens in When the Music Played and my interpretation:
When The Music Played is directly after It's a Godsend. Lara is newly married to Pasha, as you can see in this scene, but her love for Pasha really is not her entire motivation of marrying him. Before the song starts, Lara asks Pasha that they should be honest to each other. Pasha is confounded, so Lara revealed her secret to him and why she chose to marry him. She has been in a secret affair to Komarovsky, a cunning, opportunistic, and influential Moscow lawyer for years in pursuit of material well-being. In the novel, shortly after their affair started, Lara began to go to school, made friends (which is how he met Pasha), and had the means to start a new life. Yet Karmarosky's presence prevents her from doing so. He even threatened her that if she stops seeing him, he would accuse her of being a whore to destroy her name. He's far more influential than a dress maker's daughter after all.
He forced Lara into a dead end, which caused her to an extreme path. She managed to find a gun and tried to murder Karmarovsky in front of dozens of guests in a Christmas party, which was witnessed by Yuri Zhivago (Another song from the show called Who Is She? is about the aftermath of this event). Ironically, it was Karmarovsky that stopped her from being arrested. So, the only way Lara thought would work to get rid of Karmarovsky is to get married. In this sense, Pasha is merely a stepping stone for her.
In When the Music Played, she essentially explained her affair with Karmarovsky, how desperate she was to escape his grasp, how apologetic she was toward Pasha for being unfaithful to him and using him, and how true her love to him actually is. It roughly fits in the category of "I Want song", but is much more layered in my opinion.
It really is a powerful piece and one of my personal favorite. I hope you find this helpful and have fun with it.
I can´t thank you enough! I would love to see the show...so sad it´s gone..i saw a bit of the russian show where she sang when the music played but she was making love to Karmarovsky and wanting him yet hating him at the same time...it´s so confusing..if you could upload the song befor e 14 april i would be soooooo thankfull cuz i have an audition with that song and would really love to see it.. ur the best! thank you soo much
I may be able to. If you want the sheet music, just leave me an email address. The show is actually quite popular anywhere else in the world right now. It has productions proping up left and right in Europe and South Korea in the recent few years. I'd love to see it receives a second life at Broadway or West End.
