- The x68000 was a Japan-exclusive personal computer released in the late 80s.
It was known to be quite expensive - but also very, very powerful; this made it a great gaming machine. Of particular note was its ability to run some amazing ports of arcade games of the time - far surpassing the quality of ports for its console siblings.
In this video, we examine 101 of the games that appeared on the system.

Really cool display. The more I have seen out of this PC the more impressed I am. And this is from the 80's. About the same time I was playing Carmen Sandiego on a CGA monitor.
An interesting video, nice to see you give titles to the games, some TH-camrs don't.
I redeemed the Steamkey: this looks like a fun game to spend some hours with -- it's TOWNSMEN: A KINGDOM REBUILT. A medieval town-building sim with a pleasing art style. Cheers, Gary!

So many cool games in this video, and they look great! A lot of ports that look familiar from PCE & MD, but also a lot of games I've never seen before -- shmups, racers, even a couple of platformers that look rather charming. Time to do some exploring...
Now that you've made videos for MSX 1/2 & x68000, probably the two most interesting on the Japanese home computer front -- what's #3? FM Towns? NEC PC's? I love the idea of finding action-game gems on these long lost JP PC's....
It really has an incredible library; not only did it feature best-in-class arcade ports, it also featured greatly enhanced ports from other home consoles; not only that, but it also played host to ports from the IBM-PC world - *and* in addition to this, it's own extensive library of exclusive games...
A great question on where to go next ... some research needs to be done!

The sort of successor to the MSX. Shame a lot of these games are dead with it. I'd buy Nemesis 90 Kai for sure. I think I'm going to have to get Castlevania Chronicles from the JPN PSN for PS3.

Computers didn’t dip below $1k until the late 90s. $3k wasn’t unreasonable to spend on a computer back then.

@@bigedwerd PCs costed a lot more back then. A decent PC went for about $2500. In the early 90s, my parents bought a used 286, which was almost obsolete by then, and it still costed about $800. I’ve got the receipt to prove it.
You can find scans of old computer catalogs on the internet which should give a better idea of what prices were like back then.

It’s a shame the West never got this computer. It would’ve been awesome to have an arcade board for a PC that could play near-arcade perfect ports of just about everything from the late 80s/early 90s. The Japanese always seemed to keep the best stuff to themselves.
If you got money you can buy one on ebay but its not cheap. About $2500 for a complete system. Games are expensive also.

Just found out this system existed. Hard to believe a lucky few had access to that gaming power in the late 80s. I wasn't playing anything remotely close until mid 90s when I got a SNES. Even then it looks like the 68000 had better ports of a lot of console games. Biggest drawback I see is the lack of a hdd. This means some games would have to be on 7+ 5.25" diskettes. Meaning a lot of "please insert disk 4" messages to interrupt the action. Would be cool to see new games developed for this now that retro gaming has made such a comeback recently.

The vast majority of the system's game library will run off of 2MB of installed RAM. The more workstation oriented software (non-games) could vary, and the system could cap out at 12MB of total RAM with the appropriate expansions.
