  • There are definitely a few things I wished I'd known when I started out as a camera assistant. No one really told me what to do or what order to do it in until I was suddenly working my first job as a 2nd AC on a big television drama.
    So here's a bunch of tips so that your fuck ups may be minimal.

    So useful - doing my first short film as a second ac and absolutely terrified of messing something up, so this gave me a lot more confidence

      Oh that’s so wonderful to hear! I felt the same way when I started out, I scoured the internet to find anything that would help 😅

      Same, except I got put on as KEY assistant camera. I obviously had enough experience to warrant consideration, but man... It just means so much to all of us, ya know? Never had a plan B, so it's ride or die every time.

    Wow, these were fantastic - I work as an AC generally and I hadn't heard of printing out actors names and characters before - really good tip!

    Nice video! For anyone: Use a lanyard tag holder (one of those transparent plastic thinggys) for the cutout of actors' names. Extra level of neat for ACs with OCD :P

    Great tips - thanks for putting this together! As a DP I joke that I shoot everything auto - “Hey, AC....” 😂
    To paraphrase Arthur C. Clarke;
    “Any sufficiently prepared AC is indistinguishable from magic”

      @actodp2576  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I must say a great DP can be just as thankless as a great AC. When it's perfect for the story it draws no attention to itself 😉 magic indeed

    why there is not two different operator in camera team, one touch the camera and second who only focus focus puller work. Because if you 1 camera assist do both work it takes time to training in focus puller work.

      It’s the age old conundrum - you can’t get a job without experience, but you can’t get experience without a job. When I started as a film assistant, I looked up all the AC’s in the 411 directory and called them. I told them what I was interested in, my level of experience, and asked if there was a way to visit them on set. Some were accommodating, and allowed me to hang out while they worked. During down time or between shots, they would explain things and show me the routine. I also went to the camera rental houses where the AC’s were prepping their packages, and did the same thing. There they had more time to talk and explain things. The rental houses will also help you learn the equipment. It is good for them because they want people that are using their equipment to understand the gear. You might try to first get a job at a rental house as a prep tech, which is where a lot of AC’s start. They become experts on the cameras, and gear, and meet many experienced camera people for future connections. You must put yourself out there and let people know you exist - then take every opportunity to learn whatever you can.
