Something I wanted to point out about Leonidas is before the battle the Oracle at Delphi apparently said “Either a king of Sparta or Sparta will fall.”
Sparta had a duel monarchy so Leonidas, being 60 years old, decided that he would be the king to fall so that Sparta may live
In my opinion, Sabaton still falls on the underrated list. Glad to see you giving them some spotlight! If I could suggest a song, maybe react to The Carolean’s Prayer? It’s off of Carolus Rex, and not many react to it or talk about it.

the different types of soldiers on the cover of the last stand album serves a purpose, the samurai is for the song "shiroyama" which is about the samurais last stand against modernised japanese soldiers armed with firearms agaisnt the samurais naginatas (japanese polearm) and katanas (the typical curved one sided swords from japan), the winged hussar for the song "the winged hussar" about the polish winged hussar cavalry units that rescued a besieged city at the brink of surrender, the modern soldier in the foreground is for the song "the lost battalion" about an american battalion in the argonne 1918 surrounded by german forces, there is also a swiss guard, a redcoat (imperial british army) soldier and some more different references to the different songs on the album

@@eduardklima5698 possible but to me the rifle looks more like an m1903 springfield which was the most common american rifle in ww1 than an m1 garand or m1 carbine that was more common in late ww2
@@Deilwynna Yes rifle looks like M1903 (and bayonet has ww1 look). Helmet looks WW2 (and unifom as well) but it might also be composite for both songs.
And the rifle together with the katana are making a scythe.

As for the background, that's just the artwork for the album. The Last Stand is a concept album which is based around famous last stands in history, such as the battle of Thermopylae, The battle of Rorke's Drift, and the Fall of Belgrade. Basically though, not a bad track in sight and you should listen to ALL of them!!!

You should check out “The Last Battle” and “82nd all the way.” The last battle is about one of the weirdest battles in WW2 where the US fought alongside the German Wehrmacht against the SS, and 82nd all the way is about a soldier in WW1 who went crazy and earned medals from a bunch of the nations in the Entente

All the songs on The last stand Album are great. Personally would recommend Shiroyama or Winged Hussars, First one being the fall of the samurai to the Japanese government. The second being the siege of Vienna and how the polish cavalry army of winged hussars came at the last possible moment to save the Austrian city from the ottoman empire, The battle was the main influence for Helms deep in the lord of the rings.
Wasn't it more the inspiration for The ride of the Rohirrim at Pelennor Fields. Largest calvary charge in history to free a city under siege defintely hits closer to Minas Tirith than it does Helm's deep

I actually have a fun recommendation probably outside your wheelhouse normally, but sometimes something new is awesome. The song is "Rylanor's Last Stand" by Stringstorm. It's a wholly original song based on a Short Story from Warhammer 40k. It's a song about essentially a crippled old man in a mecha who tries to kill a demigod who is genetically his "father" in a sense that is now a demon and in a final moment of defiance tells him to kick rocks. Absolutely epic, and recommended highly, especially because Rylanor is one badass old man

Also another fact. Spartan hoplites in war has 2 swords. The xiphos a short shord and a knife and 1 spear and shield. Wearing breastplate they are metallic from head to toes. And also they wear a red cloak so the enemy WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO REALISE IF THEY WOUNDED A SPARTAN OR NOT. They march on by the sound of a flute, all spartan hoplites are not talking therefore the historians now called then as "SILENT DEATH"

Dave as a Greek, the name of the TRAITOR of Spartans is Ephialtes. His name lived to remind us HIS SHAME. Also Ephialtes in Greeks has the meaning of the word nightmare in English now

The Greeks at the time had better armour than the Persians did, and their weapons were better too. Persian arrows just couldn't get through it, never mind the shields on top of that. Spartans were warriors from childhood, no other city-state acted in war that way - and, had they not been betrayed and had the Persians NOT found the pass around the Hot Gates... they would have been able to hold the enemy there indefinitely. It was a perfect choke point. Altogether, about 1200 Greeks went to the Hot Gates. If they had had double that number, they could have also held the pass around the Gates. They didn't, so once betrayed, the majority were sent back by the Spartans to warn the rest of Greece, while they HAD to remain. A Spartan could not retreat from battle without massive dishonour at the very least. In fact, they could only earn the right to be remembered after death by dying in battle. The 300 Spartans and their client state (cannot remember the name of them, now) remained and died to a man - with only ONE Spartan surviving who was ordered to return to Sparta with the news. No dishonour to him, for he was ordered by the King - and there was another battle not a year later that he'd get his chance to earn his legend in.

A little hint , the famous ("molon lave" phrase - come and get them), in the movie is not accurate definition , in Ancient Greek that phrase (ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ can be a great tattoo :) means if you're adequate enough try to come and get them

Dude, I'm sure someone has probably already mentioned it, but the art at the end I believe is the album art. They are not referring to Samurai helping the Spartans so anything of the sort. I really did appreciate the quality of the reaction, but gosh, I was cringing so hard at the speculation at the end. Love the Sabaton reactions, just leave a little bit of research time at the end there to resolve uncertainty. Still, fantastic material here, I look forward to more Sabaton in the future, brother!

I was recently looking into the betrayal specifically. The one who "betrayed" them wasn't even a spartan, but from a different greek city state. He wasn't an outcast for having physical deformities or anything like that, but most likely just somebody who saw the Persian system as an improvement over the Greek one. Some historians have pointed out that while the Persians have been portrayed as the bad guys they actually were closer to our modern ideals and governmental systems in many ways than the Greeks.
It should also be stated that the original history written about the battle was written as a play. There have been things found that point to how accurate it is, but even the oldest known story we have of the battle is in a way touched by the Hollywood if its day. So our modern Hollywood version is a Hollywood version OF a Hollywood version.
