My family burned a passport, thousands of dollars (in afterlife money), a mansion, a Mercedes Benz, and a private jet to my grandfather. We gave him a passport so that he can visit his friends there and have a car and jet to go to places and a place for him to invite his friends over.
Every QingMing Festival I would burn a few paper clothes with my ancestor's name on it. They say if there's no name on the clothes, the wild ghost would take the clothes away instead of your ancestor. Some people would say never go near to the Zhizha shop at night, because all the homeless ghost would stand outside the shop and stare all those beautiful hand-made paper Zhizha, just like human we look at the things we wanted. (sorry for my broken English)
That's fascinating yet also sad. You say the items need a name so they aren't carried away. We know in the US it can be pretty hard to identify a homeless person since, most of the time, their families have abandoned them for one reason or another and refuse to come forward. But, of course, the US has all its' high tech identity stuff to find out who someone is. Can they not do that for those people where you are as well, so that they too can also receive a thing or two in the afterlife, even if only from a caring stranger? I know you guys have some crazy high tech stuff too, hence why we asked. Forvive us if we overstepped a line in our comment. But this kind of stuff fascinates us quite a bit and hearing it from someone who was raised hearing those stories and growing up in such a rich culture is amazing :) -Alex

Because in our Chinese culture every July 14(chinese calender) is the ghost festival, the gate of the HELL would open up for the spirit to go back their home where they live before to visit their families. So for those family didn't have a mini shrine in their house, the spirit couldn't go back to the house and so they becme homeless, because nobody is going to visit their tomb either, so we felt sad for the homeless spirit that's why some people would set up a mini tiny shrine on the road side and place some food and incense for the homeless. That's why when July is around we wouldn't go out too late or else something is following you back home.

In the beginning, it was bittersweet but as the living got older each visit became more harmonious as we understand more about each other in relation to how the deceased has treated us. So, this year we burned many things so that grandma and grandpa won't have to bicker to who gets what in the afterlife. I hope they like it. Love ya both, see you on the other side!
