Thought it would have gone back into Germany at the end.

Due to its intricate history modern Alsace, with its capital Strasboug, is where the French and Germanic cultures meet and mix. If you have an interest in architecture, walk in Strasbourg, you can guess among classical buildings which ones were built by the French, which ones were built by the German. Alsace was originally a Germanic land with a Germanic culture, a part of the Holy Germanic Empire, until the French conquerred Strasbourg in 1681. Since then the province has alternated five times between France and Germany. French from 1681 till 1871, from 1918 till1940, and finally since 1944. German again from 1871 till1918, and from 1940 till1944. Though I'm not Alsatian I have a special feeling for this province, which I've often visited. Besides the beauty of the area I like to think, as a modern day EU citizen, that this region which in the past it was a source of hatred and wars between France and Germany, is nowadays often cited as a token of peace and friendship between the two nations.
