  • The African bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus), also known as the pyxie frog, is one of the largest frogs on the planet. But more than being one of the biggest frogs, it is absolutely the most hardcore of all frogs. These guys eat mammals, birds, other reptiles, and even other amphibians including other African bullfrogs. But is the African bullfrog a good pet? Is it the best pet amphibian for you?

      There’s something about big or fat animals in general that I’m naturally in love with. I can’t help it. Yesterday I saw a picture of a dog who’s legs had been shaved but with some floof just around the paws, and then they rounded out his fur- he looked like a chicken wing if you slid the meat up the bone!!! 🤣🤣

    The African bullfrog is basically just a big mouth with legs
    and according to Attenborough they can be quite the protective father in the wild, creating a stream to connect their puddle nest to the rest of the pond to save the tadpoles from a deadly drought

      Some people here might be joking a bit when saying "he did it on purpose", but with firsthand experience with these frogs I can say that it isn't beyond the realm of possibility. I've been astounded by how smart these frogs are, from masterminding escapes to using body language to get desired food. They are the only amphibian I know of that is more like a lumpy particularly lazy dog than any other frog I've owned.

      I live in Australia and when the spa in my parents backyard broke we drained it, Filled in and removed all the pumps, cleaned and refilled it with fresh water. A few years _(and a few modifications)_ later and it's pretty much re-established half the population of frogs in their area _(nothing rare or anything)_ as well as some other birds and things. _(I don't know all the details, But my parents are old hippys/conservationists haha)_

    African bull frogs are awesome, but they are one of those pets that don't do much unless they are eating.
    This can lead to two common problems: 1) overfeeding 2) being neglected once the owner has got bored.
    If you do wan't one - try to see if there's any adults that need rehoming.

    Y'know, I love rain frogs (breviceps), but I don't know if they're good pets. I've tried to find captive bred ones, but I suspect they're all taken from the wild. I love frogs in general but don't own any currently. I'd love to see a video on any species of rain frog. They're hilarious looking and squeaky.

    • @Axqu7227
      @Axqu7227 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Breviceps are nearly impossible to breed in captivity. Their life cycle is super unique and nearly requires a wild environment. Even with hormones it doesn’t really work

    I love the big fellas, some of my favorite amphibian videos are just about these guys. I had no idea they had bone fangs! That's cool!
    Also, I love the closeups you got of the frog, especially of their eyes. That's really cool too.
    I might consider an african bullfrog someday, because they are clearly awesome.

    Yay a frog video, keep them coming! I haven't kept a frog in 20+ years but I really want to get one soon. It's been too long. I'm probably going to get a fire belly toad because it was my first frog and my favorite but African bullfrogs, Pacman frogs, and poison dart frogs will come soon after.

    I've had my male, Gustaf, for a few years now. He can eat Jumbo mice/small rats, though bugs are the norm. I've taken him with me on a road trip out of state. He "ran" for president last year and I took him out to help him campaign. He'll lunge at cats, not afraid of anything. And he feels like a giant pickle. When he croaks/ribbits, it sounds like a small cow. These frogs are awesome pets!
