    That's right Dave, you cannot have enough Respighi, and that is why I've just ordered the cd in question. I think Maestro Trevino is emerging as an exciting recording talent - for example his "Americascapes" album on Ondine is marvellously enterprising, especially since it showcases the excellent Basque National Orchestra in what must have been totally unfamiliar repertoire. I'm a Respighi nut, and so am much looking forward to getting the cd.

      MichaelCattermole "You cannot have enough Respighi".
      Indeed, that sentiment should be a test for the trustworthiness and probity of strangers.
      How can you not like this man's music?
      The "Ancient Airs and Dances" is a great anodyne for depression, spiritual ennui, whatever!
      My regret is that this man did not live longer.
      Meanwhile I have a date at the "catacombs" and along the "Appian way".
      Ciao!

    Hi, Dave. I'm an italian music fan who attend to the RAI Orchestra's concerts from the beginning of the '80ies. I really enjoyed the live performance of Respighi's Trilogy last autumn and I'm now so proud that my" RAI Orchestra could show all over the world its qualities and its high level with this remarkable recording. Last week Trevino and RAI "did it again", with a truly terrific performance of Mahler Fifth. I hope to be able to listen very soon to another Ondine tribute to this wonderful Orchestra 😅

    Yes! This was such a great disc. I also have a million of these & was super happy with this one. At first I was a bit bummed when I saw it wasn't with the Basque National Orchestra, who Treviño has done some amazing Ravel with. But this exceeded my expectations. 🥇
    By the by, we could still use repertoire talks for Fountains & Festivals!

    I heard the local orchestra perform PINES several years ago, and when the nightingale solo came in, a woman nearby whispered loudly "A bird must have gotten in here!" (First musique concrete/orchestral fusion, good on Respighi!) This disc looks like a must-own, thanks.

    Thats now two recordings of Respighi's technicolour musical travelogue that I've acquired in a few days. Enjoyed the Neschling and perhaps, even more, the Trevino. Two very fine performances and recordings

    Nice, can never have enough Respighi and I'm glad this is out since I haven't listened to this pieces in quite a while but often think about them.
    Off topic question: Have you considered doing a sorta spin-off series/talk for the Fabulous Concert Program at Home, but with chamber or even piano recital repertoire?

    Only heard of Respighi and Pines of Rome this year, because one of the local amateur orchestras is playing in the first half of next year. I assumed it was a one off piece, so surprised to hear there's a whole trilogy. I normally wait till playing to make a judgement and then get a recording if I need to hear it again after performing it (not all pieces do that, but playing Mahler 2 forced me to buy a recording to hear it again). I'll have to revisit this video if I like Pines. Gramophone record sounds like an interesting innovation.

    the recording of Enrique Batiz and RPO is excellent. it's recorded by Brian Culverhouse. Brian could have helped Toscanini's recording if he was around then.

    Hi Dave - off topic, but any thoughts on Apple's acquisition of BIS? There's a bit of speculation about this and concern that Apple is not truly interested in running a classical record label. If so, what is the purpose of this and what precedent does it set for media and streaming services?

    • @DavesClassicalGuide
      @DavesClassicalGuide  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      As I said previously, I really couldn't care less about it. I think my remarks on Universal snagging Hyperion apply equally here.

    • @paulmiller5205
      @paulmiller5205 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fair point, though I think Apple is a very different company from Universal - thus it's not just another consolidation.

    I have a recording of the trilogy on a hard drive with Antonio Pedrotti and the Czech Philharmonic that I recall thinking pretty magnificent, though as I recall the Pines was really the thing there. I’ll have to check this one out because I agree completely that having them all as one unit is appealing for some reason.

      The Pedrotti Fountains and Feste were recorded in '61, and they are really goofy. Pines was recorded later (I think '73), and the finale is AMAZING..especially the brass and Tam-Tam. LR

    As you say Maazel's Cleveland Festivals is superb and still way ahead of the field. I like his Pines less. Overall I still think the best set is Dutoit/Montreal despite the Appian Way being on the fast side. The Decca engineers do a superb job and having just listened, admittedly briefly, to the end of this new Pines it lacks the sheer panache of the old Dutoit recording.

    • @DavesClassicalGuide
      @DavesClassicalGuide  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh, no, it doesn't. Dutoit is very disappointing, and the sonics are harsh and brittle.

    One recording that seems to have slipped under the radar and one that has been my reference for years is Yan Pascal Tortelier and the Philharmonia Orchestra on Chandos. Fabulous tam tams in the Pines and Festivals and superb recordings throughout. I suspect it's no longer available having been superseded by that dreadful John Wilson/ Sinfonia of London recording. Where are the tam tams at the end of Festivals, so inaudable as to make you wonder whether they were actually deployed.

      Yes, I like that one very much, but the cymbals are off-mike. You just can't win.

    • @stevepillemann9373
      @stevepillemann9373 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I ask myself why today the cymbals are very often off-mike. This is the case in almost every recording of the Digital Concert Hall with the Berlin Philharmonic. One can see the percussionist doing his or her job, but the sonical result is usually very disappointing.

    Not that you're probably interested, but in Italy they just pronounce it "rai" like one word. Nice to see an Italian orchestra excelling in this repertoire!

    The orchestra do play really well but I wish the trombones weren't placed so far back in the mix. The Trevi Fountain has a great, really fun, bass trombone part and I was disappointed you don't hear it and it isn't given its chance to shine.

    I liked the performances, but the orchestral playing wasn't the best, and the recording sounded muddy in the loud sections. Neschling, for example, had much better playing and sound.
