Disaster! Road So Rough It Broke The Trailer Axles!

- This is episode 156 of Finnegan's Garage and contains Part 2 of Mike Finnegan's cross-country trip from Georgia to California. The plan was to haul my 711ci twin-turbo jet boat, Game Over, to the Colorado River to do a bit of racing and boating. However, when I arrived in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, I quickly discovered that Interstate 40 was so rough that it actually broke the axles on my boat trailer. Lucky for me, Jake Jordan has a fab shop called AZ Freeride/AZ Fabrication and helped me put some tig-welded band-aids on my stainless steel air ride boat trailer. It burned a solid day of my vacation but in the end I met some cool, new people and got the rig fixed up enough to make it to the river to meet up with my friends and family.

Hey Finn! Put an air line between the front and rear bags but leave the two sides separate. It will let the load equalize when backing up hills or out of the trailer.

Yeah but a couple more gussets straight up to the frame on both sides from where that jinky connection comes together is a necessity at least.
@@letzrockitrite8469 you cant put gussets Above it or you risk damaging the bottom of the boat while loading/unloading.

@@warhound7781 I love my state, if the wheels are visually out of alignment, the cops can impound the vehicle and only release it to an approved repair shop. If you want your car back, you will pay whatever they change you, and it won’t be cheap. Second offense is they crush the car. Keeps the stupid crap off the road.

Put the trailer up on jack stands, just to take up the weight and strap it down tight to the trailer floor. This is what we do keep from wearing out the suspension components on the race car when towing.
Thats a good call, also actually strapping the boat to trailer would solve some problems, but people seem to miss that part.
Some point this channel went from cars and burnouts to boats and trucks.

I don't know why the panhard bars aren't longer and tied into the upper frame. It's like they forgot to order the correct ones and bodged something together with the bars they did have.

That's how lots of trailer places do it, if you have a narrower track than normal, cut the tube and butt weld the two parts back together. A good shop would sleeve the butt joint either inside or outside.
that's not really true. it's just shitty welds.
14:23 Engineer here, this is what we engineers call a hard point in the construction. Its a 90 degree angle where the forces basically will be immense around the corner. What you need there is a bracket or soft toe to softly flow the forces around the angle. Basic engineering...

Dude this is how life should be everywhere with everyone. If we all treated each other the way these guys do life would be sweet. We are all the same and what's good for you is good for me so I'll pick you up and you'll watch my back. That's how we managed to get this far so let's not go backwards.
Dang Mike, Im 56 and grew up on the Colorado River 3 months out of the year. My parents leased property from the Indians 7 miles north of Blythe by the land marks carved in the ground that are now fenced. So crazy how the river still flows after all these years. I love it.
As someone that drives across that section of 40 twice a week. MM90 to MM120 in AZ is probably some of the WORST road I drive on my weekly trip from Jax FL to Lancaster CA and back. I am completely not surprised it broke shit.
I spent almost every other weekend of my childhood in Parker with my dad and his 18’ Avenger outboard. I didn’t know it at the time but those were some of the best times of my life. I happy for you that you got out there to have some fun!

Car people often help other car people! I've broken down in the middle of nowhere and always got some help from local strangers, just remember to return the favor if you se somebody stranded by the road!
And if they weren't his friend they are by the time he leaves the next place he breaks down!😎👍

that young welder chap Jake is the business. ive done some welding in my time but he makes my welds look really bad! maybe i should stick to wood, you cant weld it but there are some super strong glue kits out there!

You may be no engineer Mike but I am. That trailer was a disaster waiting to happen. Lucky the suspension didn't fail when you were towing it.

Mike I just finished a move from California to Tennessee using the 40 on the first trip. The road was so bad it broke a strap and threw junk around in my trailer smashing the rear window in my Fairlane. Also had an engine tied down and it broke the casters off the dolly.
The second and third trip I used Interstate 10 to Phoenix and came north on the 17 cutting out the bad section of the 40 from the river to Flagstaff. Much better but added two hours to the trip. Well worth it to save wear and tear on the rig.
I wrote Arizona dept of transpo and told them they should be ashamed of themselves. In recent conversations with other racers everyone confirms it’s a terrible road and has been for a while.

I thought your wife and kids were with you the entire time, which is why u had the curtains pulled behind the drivers seat. She’s a smart lady for flying in haha

Boats have a larger freeboard now and everything is longer...including trailers. Our local parking lots were built in the 70s and everyone had a single axle trailer with an 18' boat. Now people have 23-25' boats with triple axle trailers. Nothing fits in the parking spaces and it takes everyone forever to launch and load. I'm a wakeboarder and this is so true in our boating world. And the boat prices reflect the popularity of surfing $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

This'll probably get buried, but if you were to film through the lens of a spare welding mask, you can video the welds being done. Just something to experiment with and give the viewers a different view of a common sight on this channel XD
That trailer Mfg'r should be making a brand new trailer that fixes all these issues and bringing it to you to swap it out with that pile of crap!

Something we always did with our fuel altered is get a tractor tire tube and inflate it under the chassis to support it when it was in the trailer. Maybe you could do that with the axles? Get 2 tractor tire tubes and put one under each axle when it’s in the trailer… just a thought I figured I’d tell!

When he said he wasn't planning on shooting any video while on his vacation, I felt a little left out. We have only seen test runs by his house but this trip (and the boat drags) is what this boat is meant for.

We only know what he shares and he shared the drive out there and chose to share more since it turned into a bigger work day than he expected. Saying that I felt left out does not imply that he shouldn't or can't do things off camera, or that we have to see everything, just that I wanted to see the boat run. Who knows? Maybe he planned to share a few clips on the river and skip video on what he thought would be little projects. To show the trip out but nothing of running the boat would kind of leave viewers hanging. Often times, his content is just short clips anyway.

I love the fact that he has harbor freight jack stands and not some stuff from snap-on.... Spend your money where you need to folks!
To be fair their jacks are some of the best you can get, especially for the money. Plus the whole jack stand recall was blown out of proportion. You had to have the jacks lightly loaded and slam into the handle.
@@ionstorm66 oh that was all over the handle? I'd imagine never wanting to hit the handle with anything anyways but shit happens.
@@jeffadams4590 Yep you had to have them under about 20% capacity, then hit the handle upwards, and it would skip all the teeth. They wouldn't break or be damaged, but the drop could easily tip over whatever they were holding up.
The only video example i've seen was a dude with a trailer on them, and he hit the handle up with a jack handle several times to get it to drop. Granted his stands might of been better than others.
Realistically there is a roll pin between the handle and paw that should shear before the load drops.
