Commented this on an older video before too but I really like them as a rehab tool. Controllable depth that you can gradually lower to your normal squat height and eliminating the SSC also can be easier on the tendon in case of tendinopathy
I've been experiencing lower back and tailbone pain, no stress fractures on my x-rays, did box squats and I had no pain so I agree as a good rehab tool
I like box squats for exposure to heavier loads, similar to a rack pull. Just like in rack pulls, there's obviously a height after which it's just stroking your ego. Another use case is when my legs are beat up from taking damage, especially with uneven hits favoring one leg, usually the lead. The box allows for a squat pattern on an uneven frame caused by the legs.
I used box squats to acclimate to the weight before heavy days. It's actually programmed in the weightlifting accessories for snatch days to be specific.
Doing them with bands and pausing on the box while maintaining tension! Really has helped my deadlift and overall squat! Ssb bar is my favorite bar for box squats!
I love them for a deadlift assistance movement. I squat to a height that matches the starting position of my deadlift, and I also use a stance that matches my deadlift stance. Even though I'm using much less than my working weight for a deadlift, the additional practice of moving that weight from a dead stop in that position (I also use a specialty bar that moves the weight forward) really reinforces a good break from the floor.
Lol the timing of this is hilarious Will. I was doing 75% 1RM box squats today for sets of 5 and on my ascent off the box my SI joint popped like a shotgun. Needless to say some rest and light movement will be taking place and am going to keep to free squats for a bit.
I use 4-6 of The Step plastic aerobic squares for my box. Its really fun. I like my box squats really low, but I don't know and can't argue any specific benefits for doing them so low other than personal enjoyment.
Is it just me, or does the point you make about box squats having greater carry over to jumps and sprints due to similar shin angles contradict your opinion on dynamic correspondence? Great video as always by the way.
What would you say approaching this question from the other direction, i.e. what does a regular squat do that a box squat doesn't? What are the advantages with regards to loading, movement pattern, etc.?
Will, I messaged you on Instagram but I had a question regarding Hoss Project Is there a way to try and maintain at least a little bit of Olympic lifts during Hoss Project or is that a bad idea all around? Ik there’s Hoss Olympic for that but right now I just want to get familiar with Plyos and also increase size and strength primarily, but on the other hand, I also don’t want to like completely abandon Olympic lifts for 2 months. Should I just be decisive with it and focus on Hoss Project for two months or can I do some technique work here and there with light loads even during hoss project? Thanks in advance coach
Will how often do you clean pull I’ve noticed you pull conventional a ton do you just take your pulls that you get from simply doing cleans as enough stimulus in that position? Do you add them into complexes?
Curious that I received the notification of this video just as I was failing a box squat, stuck with 160kg on my shoulders for 5 minutes in my home gym waiting for my girlfriend to arrive and save me 😂😂
I just box squatted today. As someone who relies on a lot of bounce, the box was a huge disadvantage.
TRAIN UNTAMED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a 100/200m Sprinter Box Squats are one of these most useful tools for us.

As a 100m sprinter, I do heavy pin squats which are sort of similar to box squats. Briefly reset after the eccentric and explode up

For training my gen pop clients, I love it as a tool to give them a tangible depth target. Great vid
Brilliant Will. Thanks!

Yes it does lol I was making an argument assuming the premise of dynamic correspondence
Good stuff dude
❤❤❤❤
Good stuff, Will.

Hello Will! In the launch 2.0 program how high should you set up your box?
I like to set the box at my normal squat depth
How do you program for olympic lifts? When to do singles, doubles, triples, variations, etc
Check out Hoss Olympic
