    An excellent review, but I have one criticism: I think the video sells Looney Tunes a bit short. Chuck Jones has waxed philosophical on his characters in the book Chuck Reducks, and what drives the humor in each character - like how Bugs is who we want to be, while Daffy is who we are (our ideal self vs. our private self). He has even written nine rules for a Wile E. Coyote and Roadrunner cartoon, which Eddache has discussed in a recent video on the two characters. There's a lot of depth behind the Looney Tunes, even if Warner Bros. hasn't always done the best job of showing it in more recent years.

    • @jccwell
      @jccwell 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      This was my thought as well. Looney Tunes lasted years and years, so it's easy to claim they fall short by making generic criticisms of them.
      But to me, the best Looney Tunes shorts are superior to the best Animaniacs episodes. What's Opera Doc is far better than any Animaniacs episode I've seen. Just my opinion

    • @Mibbitmaker
      @Mibbitmaker 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That's what I was thinking as well. Besides Jones's intellectualizing the creative process, the part of the video about real life people in the cartoons, that ignores the Tex Avery influence (Freleng also loved parodying Hollywood celebrities, even as far back as the earliest era). Tex almost invented LTs & MMs breaking the 4th wall. And World War II forced them to be a bit political, albeit mainly at the enemy, esp. Hitler. Looney Tunes should be seen from the pre-1948 cartoons as well as the later ones... though even the '50s ones parodied The Honeymooners and the Jack Benny Show.

    • @dallisjohnson662
      @dallisjohnson662 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Whatever the thought process was behind Looney Tunes, I've always found it boringly predictable, even if people who worked on it are able to talk it up in post.

      Oh, but hey, me saying "always" goes too far on second thought. There are some gems as you point out.

    • @KhanShotFirst
      @KhanShotFirst 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      In part, that's because looney tunes is kind of the GROUNDWORK for modern cartoon slapstick. Particularly, the original cartoons don't really have verbal or topical humor to draw from, which massively crimps the number of potential gags just as it makes them more universal and less bound by language or time.

  • @maryjoherlihy3156
    @maryjoherlihy3156 3 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    This was a very good video, however I do want to point out that the Pinky and The Brain (both the Animaniacs segments and the spin-off) have a little more depth than simply portraying power and narcissism. Brain’s motives for taking over the world isn’t pure megalomania, but because he believes that he can do a much better job at running the world than the current world leaders and he does want to make the world a better place. Additionally, Maurice LaMarche (the voice actor for Brain) even stated that the moral of Pinky and The Brain is to never give up and to keep persevering in the face of failure. And I think those elements make Pinky and The Brain so endearing.

    • @deevids3349
      @deevids3349 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I always thought that would be an interesting idea. A 2d animated/live action movie, similar looking to Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Space Jam and Looney Tunes Back in Action. And the movie is a parody of just like you said, live action remakes and reboots based off of cartoons. With how meta humor the Animaniacs are, it could work.

    • @galacticglamourgirl
      @galacticglamourgirl 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deevids3349 Absolutely! Cartoon characters coming to the real world is literally part of the premise of the show, so why not?

    • @juliabillman1168
      @juliabillman1168 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It would start with Dot screaming when she looks in the mirror, tells the boys, who just notice once she's pointed it out. Yakko starts tearing into the 4th wall (and something about "I didn't ask for this, I'm not Pinocchio" and "Does this mean we aren't from PENnsylvania anymore?"), and Wakko just keeps eating his waffles and says "these taste even better in 3D".
      Maybe the plot would be them trying to get the animators/studios to change them back because their cartoon powers are limited in live-action. Then, after some hurdles and cartoony stuff, they jump into a bunch of different animation styles, and when they go back to their original classic style the characters from their show are frozen/stuck in time loops and the world is stale/faded/dull, because the original animators aren't working on it anymore, and the world/industry has moved on from that kind of animation. But then, with the Animaniacs reboot, they get a compromise and a happy ending.
      I guess the theme is too serious to really fit with their vibe, but the entire plot would be a criticism of the live action remake trend, as well as exploring changing animation styles and audience tastes, and if the industry should follow the masses, or do something risky like use a unique/new animation style or story/characters.
      Wait, is that (abandoned cartoon) plot from something else? Epic Mickey?

    Animaniacs is definitely a crowning achievement of 90's animation. It was a melting pot of different ideas as it took cues from all over the spectrum, the lowbrow and slapstick comedy from looney tunes, the highbrow comedy of Saturday night live and even things like Rick and Morty, the format of a comedy sketch series such as Monty Python. It did a great job at appealing to audiences of different ages. This show in my opinion is what defined the spirit of Warner Bros., especially in the 90's. It's spin-off was also regarded as a classic and the reboot, though somewhat lacking the charm of the original, still closely sticks to its blueprint while attempting to replicate its zaniness in the 21st century. Great job, Amblin, Steven Spielberg and Warner Bros.

All of the different cameos made me think of this as a comic book when I was a kid. Like the 90s Marvel Shows. Only now as an adult, and someone who likes to write, I think about it as intersecting tales.
    Pinky and the Brain are the misdirection big bad turned ally. Father Time from Histeria! could be the old wizard of the story (Gandalf/Merlin) Animaniacs and Tiny Toons give you variety and color/personality to the cast. And Freakazoid could be your wildcard.

    I watched the reboot when it came out and loved it, so then I watched the original show, and I'm glad I did! It's genuinely one of the best cartoons ever made. Only thing that brings it down are the quality of a lot of the segments. The old show was pretty hit or miss in this aspect, some of them are brilliant (Yakko Wakko and Dot, Pinky and the Brain, Slappy Squirrel) and some are just boring/bad (Hip Hippos, Chicken Boo, Katie Kaboom).
    Honestly I think the old show only has three CONSISTENTLY great segments (Minerva Mink was funny but only ever got two segments and Rita and Runt ranged from just OK to good and both segments are dropped after season 1 so...). I like that the reboot only has the Warners and Pinky and the Brain, there's a reason they're the most popular.

    My sense of humor developed prematurely as a result of watching this show (or clips of it on TH-cam, rather) between the ages of seven and ten.
    From thence I developed also the mixture of all three Warners' persona.

    You will never see a show like animaniacs 1993. The humor alone is enough for animaniacs 1993 to stand out from the crowd

    This is why this show was fantastic while the remake just doesn't understand what made the original so good.
    The writers of the original were men and women who came from an era where talented people entertained the world, dating back decades before in film, tv and stage shows, this is why they were able to apply characteristics to these cartoon characters that gelled with people of different generations, and make timeless jokes and stories in the show.
    The reboot writers didn't understand that, they instead depend on modern day buzzwords, cheap online entertainment that's already become old to its audiences, and having nothing of substance people can find relatable anymore, outside of shallow twitter and youtube demographics.

    The bit at 6:00 regarding the mad-libs style is the same reason the Phineas and Ferb is so great: you never know the structure but not how the writers will fill in the blanks.

    This was one of the cartoons I could watch with my mother, then in her 30s, and we both end up laughing just as hard as each other the entire time.
