This is the thing that happens in every D&D game. You hint that the players should run, they don't. An NPC tells the characters to run, they don't. A huge monster arrives that is going to kill everyone unless they run, they don't. Gotta love it
That's bordering on unfair of you how you're framing it like clueless do-gooders ignoring every warning when in reality what do you expect? I mean how fun would D&D be if every PC just ran away all the time?
I mean, they TRIED to run, but it initially seemed impossible to outrun their attackers, who were faster than the PCs. It didn't become apparent until later that there was a "safe zone" or where they should be heading. With the party split, up trees and behind rocks (which seemed like decent strategies at the time), those closer to the "right direction" weren't willing to leave their friends behind. Add some unfortunate dice rolls, you really can't say they weren't trying to get to safety.
@@brockmarie This has happened to me in the past as a player, by the time it became obvious that the only chance we had was to run half the party was cornered and would not be able to get it out, we wouldn't even be able to recover the bodies of the fallen It's tough to handle those situations. As a DM you don't want to TPK the party, but a lot of players will preferr a TPK over a HPK (half party kill)
Thank you for blatantly introducing each Motorhead reference as the Motorhead reference of the week basically, as I know nothing of their music but love you for your bits
That acid attack from Laurie really demonstrated how experienced he is as a player. TTRPGs are all about finding creative ways to combine actions to facilitate the highest group benefit. Kudos, Fakidor!
I love Tom's pre-combat disclaimer, with all the little rules and details it's so easy to mess something up or even to decide that you want to do something differently on purpose because it works better for you and your group. At the end of the day all that really matters is that everyone's having a good time.
The bit I really appreciated was quickly backtracking on the throwing dirt to disengage when he realised that would be OP, but still allowing something creative to happen from it.
I love Tom’s disclaimers. I love that he cares about new people feeling comfortable in his hobby and that he understands even experienced players, including himself can benefit from hearing out loud that it’s ok to get things wrong. It’s such a thoughtful thing to include, and the fact that Holly did a similar thing in the game she ran solidifies my suspicions that Chaotic Evil will be an excellent and welcoming place to direct people looking to learn more about the amazing world of TTRPGs
Yeah. I know rule of cool and all, but I don’t like DMs that let players do what ever they want, because they inevitably win most encounters effortlessly.
@@AzureImperium7701X There's another way to balance that: Rule of Cool + Consequences. Always say yes to what they try to do (within reason), but the crazier they want to be, the crazier the unforeseen consequences are. Like, maybe they're expecting "yes, and... you kill the enemy", but what they get is "yes, and... you kill the enemy, but the magic of your spell -- which wasn't intended to be used this way, and is thus unstable -- infuses the nearby trees and awakens them." They wanted to kill one thing, and they did, but now they have several more enemies they didn't expect because of their choices.
It's really tough for me to get past how much I hate the double movement for diagonals and needing a full action to scramble over a tree or make a perception check.

As a lifelong Motörhead fan, I very much approve of the opening, and would be there for a separate video of just Tom quoting Motörhead. :) The D&D is just as awesome.
Tom, as a fellow DM myself, I totally understand the importance of admin and missing things being said at your table. It's both rewarding and frustrating at the same time!
Very fun episode! I want to note: the DM's handbook itself says that fun is more important than rules, and I love the way you rule things, while still paying attention to game balance (i.e. not allowing a bonus action disengage, since that's a full class feature for Rogues - but still giving a reward for clever ideas!). On that note - per Rules As Written, you can move through ally spaces - but it counts as difficult terrain (in other words, a space that would cost 5 ft of movement, now costs 10!) Excited for more of this adventure 🥰
While waiting for the next ep, make sure to check how Dom plays in The Apocalypse Player(their last series is awesome, I binge watched all available episodes). It's not goofy, as it's call of cthulhu, so it complements this series well.
Slamboar Wilikins reminds me of a joke from my last campaign where my half-orc barbarian (Kars Susailor) temporarily turned into a snail so we proceeded to call him Kars Susnailor
For moving diagonally, can I suggest doing the 5/10/5 rule? Basically, every diagonal space you take alternates between 5 and 10 feet. So it would be 5, 15, 20, 30, ect. That's how I usually play and it makes more sense that way personally.
@1:32:16 A headless figure blowing a horn. I'm shocked none of the players picked up on that one and had a laugh at the idea of it sticking the horn on top of it's neck :D
Awww Blair reminds me so much of my players when we started out with DnD, the extreme reluctance to attack _obviously hostile creatures_ 😂 Though idk if she's even new, some of them clearly have DnD experience, so maybe she's just overly fond of wolves for some reason.
I greatly appreciate the small simple explanations of gameplay! From someone that hasn’t really played tabletop RPGs it super helpful! Plus the dice roll at the bottom that shows what rolled along with modifiers is awesome!
I’ve played with many fully experienced TTRPG groups who don’t know when to flight instead of fight. This group’s first combat and they know the better part of valor. 🥰
People say D&D is a nerdy game, but if it were *truly* nerdy, then diagonal movement wouldn't be double *or* single; it would count as 5√2 feet, or slightly less than 1.5x movement 😁
@@brockmarie This episode, Tom has demonstrated what it means to be a true DM. "Your players forged a connection with a wolf? They used multiple spell slots to befriend and communicate with it? They're all invested in whether this wolf survives and is safe? Then... kill the doggo. And make sure he dies violently. Happy players are for Disney games, not D&D." 😂 I say this as someone who created my current D&D character intentionally to have a happy family, to buck the trend, and our DM immediately said, "Don't worry, I'll fix that."
