@@xplode2006 there are some tutorials explaining how to modify the parameters on the gopro update file to fit the Hero 2018 but I think too risky to try by myself and brick the camera. In order to use the rechargeable batteries of Hero 6,7,8 we need to update Hero 5 balck to v02.70 , But this isn't happening through the app, and to manually install we need to provide the 14-Digit Serial Number and since our cam is actually Hero 2018, I'm not able to download this update. Please help/advise to solve this.

By checking serial number is the only way to confirm that. They are otherwise identical.

It should but I don't have it anymore to confirm. There is a newer hero5 firmware so this will have changed slightly just get newest version to install.

This hack still works. But you can't update the firmware on GPH5. But still works on the standard GPH5 firmware. Anyone did try updating firmware up to date? Thanks.

Have you noticed any difference in battery life after the hack? Do you still have stabilization?
Yes it has a stabilization, the battery drains fast if you record in a higher resolution

I love you, i love you soo much, i got this for my birthday and i loved it but it was missing fetures id like and had a low res (obviously you already know) and went in a drawer for 2 years hopefully when i het home ill do this and be able to use

Can’t test that I don’t own his anymore. It should work I see no reason why it wouldn’t work. The hardware is a Hero5 no differences there, and after the Hero 2018 to Hero5 hack it is fully a Hero5

After upgrading to a 5 yes, you get all 5 black features. All of them. It is a 5 black hardware wise.
I can't even get it to open up. UGH! It says swipe down and tap. Can't get past it. I think I give up.

Yes it’s a Hero5 black now it will accept the update. I don’t own mine anymore to do it.

I have no idea if this still works in 2023. IMO anything below a Hero 7 is now obsolete for action cam. Hypersmooth changed the game. You want that feature.

Ironically a GoPro Hero 5 refurb is actually cheaper than a new GPH 2018.

@@Marinated-js6oc no dude.. Still using as it is.. But its working fine.. But i am worrying about extra batteries.. Some people experience if you use gopro battery it does not work.. But some other generic battery it will work

izhaar izhxxr no since the hero 7 line uses different hardware as compared to the hero 2018, this would not work.

izhaar izhxxr if you want a hero 5 black you’d need to obtain a hero 2018 (which I have found for under $100) or buy a hero 5 black. Since the hero 7 silver has a totally different interface and different chipsets, it means that the firmware most not work. Hope this helps!

and the second question, I see that now 2018 has 12 mega pixels instead of 10, is it nothing to do with a little bit of optics and not just the software? if someone can answer it would be great. thank you
You can find a serial number of a gopro 5 by looking on google images, etc. Not sure about the megapixel question.
jodythomas hey, tnx but i did it already. just download a wholl folder named "update" from somewhere", format my sd, and unzip all files, copy to sd and run go pro, when gopro install that it wake up with hero 5. unboleverbol how it ease and save the mony. great. thanks a lot

Thats cool - I just bought a GPH7, but if I had have seen this beforehand, I might have saved some money and bought two of these instead for different angles. Reminds me of the days I use to hack peoples Ericsson T10's into T18's which unlocked a pile of extra features. Like the 2018 --> GPH5, the T10 was just a gimped version of the T18, the hardware was identical :)
Don't worry about missing out on this deal, the GPH7 is better in every way.

Gopro is not shady, it is just marketing ;) It is cheaper to make 1 product and sell it in 4 different "package" by removing some functionality proportional to the price value. This allow a bigger range of user to get their hand on Gopro's products.

the title of the video is misleading, you didint do the procedure due to "legal" reasons, i can see that, but then again i would have worded the title differently, there are several how to videos on TH-cam for this already, i feel as if this is just a hook for views on a topic well known and publicized .
anyhow, not going to "unlike" the vid, but it was a waste of 12 min of my life when i could have been actually performing the hack rather then have an informational pamphlet about it.

Buy neither in 2023. Much better options now. Get a Hero 8 or newer or an Insta360 Go. Hypersmooth image stabilization changes the game. You want that.
