Yeah, this is just a completely generic and forgettable at best shooter, the only thing I remember about it was the over the top gore. If you just want to mindlessly shoot enemies into chunks with blood spraying everywhere then you can at least have some simple fun with it, but it gets old real fast. There are no set pieces (apart from one very brief on rails section in a mine) and pretty much no gameplay variety either. All the boss fights are absolute garbage and it takes like 10 magazines to take them out. Even though it was possible to customise your loadout before each mission, that ended up being wasted because you never got any more ammo throughout the mission so after you ran out you were always forced to use an AK47 or M16 that you picked up off the ground which just made the shooting feel even more repetitive.
You should try Conflict Denied Ops. I remember it came out at a very similar time and also received similarly shit reviews. Even so good review! Been a fan since your re-review of History Channel Battle for the Pacific.
Conflict denied ops... the only thing i remember of that game was the frustrating level design. i may have to look at that one again. Thank you so much
Personally, I thought this game was forgettable, for the most part. Sure, it's bad but I still consider Jurassic: The Hunted and Shellshock 2: Blood Trails to be so much worse by comparison. I think the only positives I have towards this game are the weapon models and exaggerated gore/ragdoll physics. But other than that, it's nothing all that special. In a way, it almost reminds me of Call of Juarez: The Cartel. Something considered the "worst game ever" when in reality it's mostly a generic shooter that you'd forget after a weekend.
Really the only time you should play this game is grabbing it in the SOF Bundle on GOG for PC (Since the first two games were by different devs and way better so it's more you're getting them with Payback as a bonus.), since it at least has really well-detailed and rare guns in it. (and the PC version at least runs well on modern systems, except your bullets phase through enemies unless you cap the framerate, so it's still a mess but at least you can fix that.) The PC version even has a mod that adds cut-weapons (Weirdly a bunch of the guns were console exclusive but the mod restores them as well.), which is good considering the weapons are the only selling point here. (Like that multi-barrel pistol that's actually real and is in no other game as far as I'm aware.)
Since foxxy is in the midst of tearing the franchise killer a new one, allow me to provide you with links for the original, GOOD Soldier of Fortune games. i liked this game back in the day and still do

@@FoxParasyte It's a shame as the previous Conflict Titles were way better. (and played drastically differently.)
Hope you come back with this

The first soldier of fortune is actually pretty good, the sequel eh not so much.
@@FoxParasyte Yeah, SOF2 was very flawed, but it's still better than Payback.
