  • In this video you'll see three of the top UK triple jumpers compete plus other good standard jumpers. Coach John Shepherd (www.johnshepher...) looks at their technique and draws from recommednations that will apply to all standards of jumpers. The ratio between the hop, step and jump, for example, is considered and recommendations made. Likewise thoughts are presented on how to achieve greater distances in the phases, by consideration of arm action, hip movement and foot contact.

How are hop distances measured, is 6m measured from takeoff to the front of the foot or back of the foot?

Good question, back of the foot, so same as when landing in sand I.e last mark back. Thanks for the question.

@@Johnshepherdtrackcoach and then step phases are measured back of the foot to back of the foot and the same goes for the jump phase as well?

How can I Hop more horizontally, in the hop phase, as I tend to go to vertical and crash down into the step phase. Thanks.

I have had a number of questions on this topic. Here's an answer I gave to a previous jumper: (I'll add a little more - see end)
The free (non-hopping) leg needs to extend off the take-off (there needs to be a large displacement at the hip). The movement is less punchy than the long jump and the angle of take-off lower. It's a smoother movement and the free leg needs to be held in place whilst the hopping leg works around it. So, forward off the take-off - free thigh parallel to the ground - hold - work hopping leg round to a position in front in a slow controlled arc - extend hop leg through hip to make active ground contact. Search for triple jump hop video on the channel for more info. I hope this helps.
      EXTRA
You may need to hop lower, so that you can better maintain your speed through the phases
The ground contact between the hop and the step also needs to be more active to keep that forward momentum - wait for the ground, extend the foreleg and then "claw" the ground to create a "pulling" effect into the next phase.
Hope this helps, all the best!

I went in search of a copy and could not locate one (probably didn't try hard enough!)... have just located a seller on Amazon, so will take a look in time. If you don't mind me asking whats the USP and especially from your point of view?
