This is a magnificent arrangement of this song! One thing I noticed about Merle, if he isn't playing some interlude he lets his musicians do their thing, and what a great job they do! I always love it when a performer turns the musicians loose and let them play. Beautiful song by a group of people who know how to play, and good old Merle singing a song like he knew it should be sung. There will never be another Merle Haggard!
I think Merle really enjoyed the magnificent piano solo. He walked over and wanted to feel the vibration of the piano strings. ha

That is a masterpiece!! Omgggggg. He really was and is the greatest artist produced by country music. The best writer, the best singer and one of the best musicians. And props to Blaze Foley for writing one of the Greatest songs anyone has ever written

This was his masterpiece. Love this arrangement. Pure and sweet, and so haunting. Country/blues. The very best. His voice and interpretation-phrasing as he got older got better and better.

I have never heard anyone sing this song as good as Merle does in this recording, He puts a lot emotion in singing this. Also, it sounds better with the piano. Merle had it all figured out. Rest in peace Merle.
I've sung this song onstage for a long time now, like " he stopped loving her today " it never gets old, and it always hits home to me and the folks that care. I'm 68 and I'm thinking of hanging up my noise makers for good, if I do those are the last two songs I will go out with , peace to all.

I am in merle haggard no now and wish I would’ve been into him back in the day but it was wearing Country where is not cool, but it really was cool now I love all of his songs and I try to mimic and play on the piano and guitar all that this song, English so cool
My wife died in my arms Dec 12th 2023 . This was her song and it was part of her celebration of life memorial.
Merle was the one who brought us together. We had a beautiful love story and 23 years together. I miss her so much and she was my life....Laurie I long for you every minute of my day and as much as our lives together were so incredible Its hard here with just the memories to keep me going.The thought of all my girl is missing with our kids and grandchildren burns me at every point of my body. ...hope you get to see Merle in concert in your new life my baby.
Merle was how I met my Mark. He is playing piano in the video. We met in 1974 and he passed away in my arms Jan 17 2020. My prayers are with you. I miss my mark, everyday.

This song truly expresses my feelings since I lost my wife of 58 years to complications from cancer. I miss her so much every day without her is just a block of time that passes by with no purpose.

This may be the only time I have ever seen Merle sing without a guitar. You can tell he didn't know what to do with his hands, but he sure did put his all into singing this wonderful song, which may be one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Thank you so much for posting this video !

Yes it was. Hope he doesn't have as hard time as Hank Jr. did finding his way. His brothers seem to have found theirs. Hopefully having had the chance to know him all the way to adult hood, it will be much smother. I can see a big time improvement in just the last five years. My heart is still full of sadness and the awareness of a deep lose, for them and everyone. Be safe and well
