  • A day in the life of an Occupational Therapy Assistant college student could consist of researching diagnoses or creating interventions for kids at a horse barn. Occupational Therapy is so broad and exciting. Enjoy this one day in my life as I try to manage a work/life balance.

      That is sooo awesome!!! We NEED more guys in this profession. I have literally only met ONE guy that is an OTA since I’ve been in school and he had just graduated from my program. Oh, and I had one guy in my graduating class. One guy and 49 women!
      How is your program set up? (Semesters, classes, fieldwork) Is it a program where you have a cohort of people that you continue with or do you take the classes on your own time?

      @@carlythecota hi Carly! I am thinking about applying for OTA school as well. Why do you think not many guys are in the profession?

    • @carlythecota
      @carlythecota  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joshuarichardson2045 Hi Joshua!! Yay!! I’m so excited for you!! For starters, OT is simply a widely unknown profession…we are so much more than handwriting, wiping bottoms of all ages, or feeding someone. Because of that, it’s hard to truly understand OT until you’re in the profession. I think maybe the surface view of OT seems to lend more towards women because it is a very empathetic and nurturing profession and focuses on activities of daily living which tend to be seen as primarily a woman’s duty. But what people don’t understand is that OT is truly difficult on your mind, body, and emotions, knowledgeable, problem-solving, and physically demanding. Lots of kids and adults respond better to a man for some reason. For example, at my work, we have only one guy and he is our tech. Sometimes he is the only way we can get some of our kids to participate just by him being in the room! Guys are natural problem solvers and OT is all about problem solving to help people live their life to the fullest of their ability whether that means with rehabilitation or adaptions. :)

    So happy I found your channel. I’m on my last year of my prerequisites and God willing I’ll be ready to start applying for the ota program by spring. Would love to see study tips that helped you in your classes. Also, did your school do any sort interview as part of the application and if so any tips on that?

    • @carlythecota
      @carlythecota  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Elisabeth!! That is SO exciting! One main suggestion for you right now is to go ahead a start studying your bones and muscles. You'll thank yourself when you get into the program. In my most recent video (8 tips for surviving OTA school), I addressed some ways that I studied during school. As I study for the NBCOT right now, I have been using Picmonics which has been SO helpful. I wish I had had it during school. The link to it is in the description of this video.
      As far as application to school, we did not have an interview, just an extensive application. Plus I applied during COVID so everything was different. Keep me updated, girl!

    Hi I just applied for the ota program and I’m kinda nervous about it. Do you have any tips on what to expect from school?

    • @carlythecota
      @carlythecota  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yay!!!! First, naturally every school will be slightly different. Plus, I started my program in 2020 (aka lockdown year) so we had an untraditional experience.
      What I do know:
      - know. your. anatomy!!! it truly is so important and follows you for the rest of your career.
      - expect a work/life imbalance. you learn about this in your course work & it will apply to your life in the moment. since OTA programs are so compacted, your main occupation will be “student.” prepare, be proactive, give yourself grace. realize that you will not be able to give 100% in every aspect of your life. prioritize and stick to it. (make yourself one of your top priorities. it is important to stay sane during the journey!)
      - network network network, make every connection that you can!
      - expect to excel in specific class and not excel in others, everyone has different strengths in OT & that is okay + crucial to the field
      - prefect your elevator speech! be able to tell people what occupational therapy is in less that 2 minutes without fumbling over your words…you’ll get asked a lot
      - explore every single setting! you don’t know until you try… I speak from experience.
      hope this helps!! keep me updated :)

      @@carlythecota aww this was really sweet I’m glad to hear back from you. But yess I passed anatomy last semester with a B + but I would probably need a refresher. And yes taking care of myself is the number one goal and I will do that. Thank you for the wonderful advice. 😊

    What’s fieldwork

    • @carlythecota
      @carlythecota  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fieldwork is on-site experience during school. We had fieldwork level one the first semester - we went to one facility one day a week for five weeks. This placement was just for observation. Then in the second semester we had two fieldwork level two placements. We were at one facility for eight weeks and we treated clients. It was like a full time job! This is where you learn the absolute most. It’s very hands on, you treat patients, and you learn from your coworkers.
