About me:
My name is Mike and I am a hobbyist watchmaker. I am completely self-taught in watch repair and restoration. My channel is all about my journey of hobbyist of watchmaking. I have watch repair tutorials, watch restorations and watch repair videos. Some of my content you can easily follow along to if you are working on the same watch movement. My main focus is to document my journey and inspire more people into this wonderful hobby and demonstrate that this hobby can be very rewarding. I do not profess to be a professional watchmaker and in my videos, I show all my mistakes, mishaps, highs and lows and keep everything as honest as possible. It is easy to edit all the mistakes out and make my videos look perfect but I believe that keeping it real reflects the true reality of this hobby. HI Guys my apologies for the black out part at 37 minutes for around 30 seconds. It was in my final edit and I missed this mistake. Hope it does not spoil your enjoyment.
I was in the middle of restoring one of these when I saw your video. I’m currently stuck on winding the mainspring because none of my winders have the correct combination of small barrel and large arbor size. Could you please tell me what you used?
@@petersmart2894 it’s the opposite way in to most springs so I don’t have left hand winders so I just hand wound it in.
I like your videos, because they show not just interesting watches and repairings, but the person and his efforts too. They are very personal. Thanks for your great work!
Thank you for this comment. I am pleased my efforts are appreciated.
Hi I'm also restoring a ricoh watch. Thank you for your videos they are very helpful to me
Holy springs brother 🤣
Indeed it is!
Watched part one. Had to catch part 2 as well.
Vehicle mechanic for 38 years, and you had me on the edge of my seat! 🫨🫣👏🏻👏🏻🇬🇧
Great looking watch. Keep up the good work. I enjoy all your videos.
Love this style of watch.
You do know that soon enough you're gonna have to get a lapping machine like the Nekkidwatchmaker did after consulting with the 'accountant'.
Beads of Rice bracelet for me! Great job Mike!
YES!!!!!!!!!! my blood pressure was up waiting for the "the moment of truth". thank you for being true to this hobby , No editing.
Thank you. You see the struggle with my videos not the polished performance I could make it
Watching this Ricoh Watch Restoration video struck a chord with me! My mom left me a beautiful gold Ricoh quartz watch that's currently not working, and seeing the meticulous process in this restoration gives me hope. It's inspiring to witness skilled hands breathe new life into timepieces with such sentimental value. Excited to explore the possibility of restoring my own family heirloom. Kudos to the restoration team for preserving these precious memories! ⌚✨ #TimepieceSentiments #WatchRestorationMagic
Didn’t they sponsor your local team/stadium Mike? Probably some subconscious affinity to the brand from looking at your fleet of richos lol. Well done on the perseverance brother, an important lesson for any young, budding watchmaker/tinker. Without this trait, no chance
Hi Joe, until a few years ago yes. Now its the CBS Arena (Coventry Building Society) but we all, of course, still call it the Ricoh! why I never mentioned this on either video is beyond me! surprised but pleased you came over to check out the video.
I think a beads of rice bracelet would go nicely on that watch. Great job.
Loved these 2 videos with all the novelty and issue solving involved. Shame you're halfway around the world or I'd get you as my watchmaker. Thanks
Thank you.
Lovely looking watch.
Don't worry about being a novice to this hobby. You do it WAY better than some people do professional things. Your friend, Jeff.
Thank you very much for the wonderful work you show .you are the best professional amateur every video I learn a lot with you thank you tony your friend
Every watch is sacred, every watch is great.
If a watch is wasted, You get quite irate. :D
Hi, congratulations for your work. It's a lovely Ricoh watch
Excellent work to figure out the problem with the automatic assembly. Really cool crystal. As always, many thanks.
Really liked this strip down and rebuild Mike. Showing the frustration we all experience when things don’t go to plan and the delights of watch repair when have a fully working watch at the end of it all. Great work! 👍
Great job, both with the watch and the video! And it looks fantastic on mesh imho...
Love it with the let.
Thanks Michael, loved it! ⌚️⏱️⌚️⏱️⌚️⏱️
I really enjoyed this video even though I am not into watch repair. Love the problem solving and patience.
Glad you enjoyed it
I bought a 1954 Omega Seamaster that works, but it's pretty nasty. I don't know if I'm ready to take it apart yet, but your channel is helping a lot. Thanks for making these videos.
stunning watch, it really worth the effort
So glad I follow you. I've been learning from your Seiko videos, and obtained a 6119 that needed parts. I purchased an advertised 6119 (Seiko dial displayed) and the case and movement was a Ricoh 610. It needed a ratchet wheel and rotor. The seller did a full refund , but said 'keep the watch'. I've purchased a donor Ricoh watch from India, It's on its way, and then.....? Your two videos of the restoration of the same movement were to be streamed by you. Watched them. Stayed up late. Loved them. All I need now is the donor. I'll never be in your league, but hey, you've introduced me into a great hobby. Good innit?
Thats great Ross. I am not in a different league just further up the ladder. It is a time game (pun intended) takes time to build up your tools and confidence to take on jobs you are faced with. As long as you enjoy it thats the main thing.
A truly adventurous service! Well done, indeed. Try a cloth strap.
i love the commentary, it adds alot
Thank you.
Thanks for part 2 Mike, throughly enjoyed it. Personally I like it when you have to get your thinking cap on to resolve issues, it keeps the content real IMO. I see you've been upgrading some of your tools, would like to see another bench tour sometime👍
A bench tour video will happen soon when I get back from my vacation .
I think it came up really well. Quite like the brown leather strap.. Well done sir.
Great job Mike! I was saying the barring in the rotor as the problem, but you beat me to the solution. I had a lot of thing to say along the way, but my goldfish memory has swam away for now. Cheers!
Fiddly one! Nice watch!
Very but fun.
I watched till the very end. Wow, that was challenging.
I think I prefer the metal mesh band.
Thank you.
Thank you for your videos 🤝, they motivated me to make videos too.
While I do not have such a tool and experience, but I try
I think all three of those Ricohs are terribly interesting and rather attractive watches. They're unusual looking and novel without being weird so I really like them. I actually guessed where the problem was simply because I was so uncomfortable about your choice not to lubricate the wheels. I just had a bad feeling about them. This is purely intuition since all I know about watch repair is what I've gleaned from YT videos! 😉
Fabulous rebuild, I had to watch it in one go, i just had to know the conclusion 👍
Thank you and I’m am pleased you enjoyed this video.
I enjoyed seeing that one Michael, even the struggle with the auto mushins! I think both straps you chose looked good but the leather one had the edge. Be brave and get a dark red leather strap. Look forward to your next one. Well done mate.
Puuuuffffffffff. Por fin que gran trabajo y difícil de encontrar el fallo que estaba oculto en un micro inversor. Felicidades por el logro.
Salú2 desde Puebla.
Hiya Mike. I haven't gone anywhere I'm still watching and was still with you at the end of Part 2. I'm not sure what this watch was trying to achieve, was it trying to design out some of the issues with other designs. The Pallet Fork was a revelation and can see it was designed to be a lot more robust than other pallet forks, but still relied on the same interface points. (Still working out the 'WHY' on that one.) Nice to see your mistakes again and how you tracked down where the error occurred and what it was. I was in Failure Investigations for a number of years in the Aero industry. I have always been more intrested in finding the 'Root Cause' of a issue than passing off a good unit. your approach is good and methodical, excellent. Sorry, age does make one prattle on a bit. Black Leather Strap, defiantly. 👍
I'm hoping you get this comment as I know the issue with that auto wind ratchet wheel. I know the movement well. Ricoh used essentially the same movement from the late 1960s to the late 1980s. Small design improvements were made but most parts are interchangeable. However, the height of those two posts in the middle of the two wheels changed and the depth clearance of the top plate changed. So the piece you had likely was not original to that watch as the two posts are taller causing the wheels to bind up when you put the top plate on. Took me time and referencing multiple examples to figure it out. Also helpful to oil the top of those posts as that half circle shifts in place when the direction of the rotor changes. Hope this helps. Loved your video!!
Thank you. At least i diagnosed it in the end. I still wonder why the plate was blued? I assume you have never seen this either ?
@@MyRetroWatches Indeed I have never come across one that was blued like that. The half circle with the two wheels has to be free enough in its space to flip side to side/rotate laterally depending on which way the auto rotor is spinning. That allows one of those two little wheels to engage the auto rotor regardless of the rotors direction. When those rivet heads are big like that they rub or wedge against the top plate and the half circle piece won't flip side to side without binding. The early Ricohs I have don't have big rivet heads holding those two wheels in place. Rather they just have two posts and those two wheels can be removed. The lack of rivet heads creates the needed clearance. Somewhere along the way they added those taller rivets and must have slightly altered the underside of the top plate to accommodate the rivet heads. A person could perhaps file those rivet heads down if a replacement can't be found. That blue color is a mystery. Again wonderful video it was a pleasure watching!
Well done. Got there👍. Mesh looks awesome.
I watch both videos Mike. You did a great job. It seemed like a complicated movement for what it is. Congratulations buddy for a great two videos.
Thanks. Complicated yes but possibly because its my first time. If I did one or two more of these the process would be much quicker.
Wow nice 2 part video Mike Love the Red Dial and the Facet Crystal on the Ricoh Watch as for the 30 second black out not a big deal anyone can make a mistake ... a Hug Thumbs up 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍from the US
Thanks. When I did the premier of the video it was a big surprise! As long as people keep watching for another 30 seconds then I will be okay.
@@MyRetroWatches Well i did and a zillion other viewers did the same thing just skipped to 30 seconds and watch the ending to your video again Great Video Mr Mike 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Keep it up, Mike! Great videos! I love your style, and it's because of you that I have a love of these retro styles. Don't give up or get too discouraged. YT has become populated with many channels of diy watch guys. But you and Mark are the OG's. Keep going, and I can't wait for the next one!
Thank you. I will never give up as I love doing this plus it keeps my mind focused on positive stuff. YT has more watchmaking channels than ever now. Many far exceeding what I have achieved in a much shorter time. Don't think the algorithm has ever worked in my favour 🙂
@@MyRetroWatches screw the algorithm
preferred the metal strap and a great outcome. watch looks great.
Well done, That was quite a challenge, I enjoyed both videos .
Thank you.
Just love your videos. Gives me more drive to do it. I was actually thinking if the reversing wheels were causing the problem. And an answer to your question no it was not to much for this watch what you have done. If you like the watch / brand why not restore it!
I also have a ricoh with same movement. This is ricoh 61 movement and this has many types the one in video with number on day window is before 1970. This is a good and long lasting movement
Great video lots of twists and turns it happens to all of us, please keep them coming great stuff 😊
I like the Ricoh’s, great job
Thanks!
Nice work Sherlock, I'm impressed. I knew that you could do it. I've never seen a movement like this. Thanks for the share. Let us know how the rotor works out.
Thank you. This one was great fun. Its what I have to keep on telling myself anyway :-) pleased you enjoyed it.
Hey Mike, another good head scratcher. I like how you don't give up on a problem. Personally I think the mesh band looks great.
Intresting. I having one of those comming up on the bench!
Good luck with it. You will be fine.
Wow! Well done. You showed great tenacity. Watch looks amazing!
Excellent stuff, enjoyed those 2
Thank you for watching both!
This was truly epic and a great result! I love how you kept coming back and wouldn’t let the issue go. “Now for the timegrapher… ok one more thing to try”. Loved the video
I could not let it go Chris! It was 1am so I slept on it and the morning it made a bit more sense finally!
I love it, so retro.
Great videos mate! Good work!
Fabulous matey!
Great !
Not too long at all.
Ricoh had a good history with watches in Japan and been quite good quality as well.
I have broken one similar to green you show somewhere.
I like the leather look
Enjoyed this Mike. You might want to do a before and after shot at the end, as I went back to remind myself and was amazed at the difference. Looks great and I like the mesh strap but as some folks have commented, perhaps a dark red might just do the trick.
You know I took all the footage to do it so I could go from one to another seamlessly and forgot!
I’m away at the moment but when back I will make it a short
Lovely watch, great work, thank you.
Many thanks!
I admire your persistence and commitment to this endeavor sincerely ez
Thank you.
wow the indecies were actually hand made by the looks as they were not symentrical. that was so nice to see
its nearly 1am in the morning while im watching this lol
It’s usually that time when I’m filming!
Looks great on the mesh bracelet
Great videos as usual Mike. Really enjoyed the content in them both. Keep up the great work mate. All the best Paul.
Black leather looks great
Great video Mike, enjoyed the journey and the result! Hopefully bump into you again at the watch fair next month.
Well done again with these two vids Mike. I almost bought a Richo the other day at an antiques fair. Very clean movement and plenty to keep you on your toes. Keep them coming 👍👍👍
Thank you. You should have bought it. In the watch world my motto has been from very early on "the right time to buy something is when you see it" basically procrastinate too long and someone else will jump in before you.
@@MyRetroWatches Mike, your an unknowingly bad influence as it is! Got my eye on a 62 MAS and Monaco!!! That footage from your budget microscope is great, things have come such a long way since my early days of digital microscopy.
Good video, the watch turned out great, worth saving a vintage watch so it still exists, and getting a nice watch from it at the same time.
Have you thought of trying a silver expanding metal strap, or a black mesh strap? My gradu-tint Ricoh came with an Allwyn (Indian made Seikos) bracelet on it, I think it looks good.
Thanks . I don’t much care for expani- bands . I’d like to eventually find a Ricoh bracelet that would fit however it’s unusual in its 20mm lug width. All Ricoh bracelets I’ve seen are 18mm
@@MyRetroWatches that would be good, I hope you have some luck finding one.
Good interesting genuine video & thanks for sharing!
Thank you for that . Appreciate this feedback.
lovely dial I like it a lot. strap looks cool however personally brown or tan I would of preferred. great job
Might try it on a tan. For a vintage it has a 20mm lug width
Great videos Mike. Many thanks for sharing
Cheers mate. See you at the fair
The intermittent wheel(pair) between the rotor and first wheel is put upside down. Rectify and the rest is okay.
This is my Master ,My Guru G..
Good observation . MASTER G sir keen observation is excellent .Thank u
Thank Mike love your videos and your enthusiasm. It was worth all the work for sure.
Thank you. really appreciated.
Bellissime immagini. Bravo
great watch nice chat love the channel !!!
Thank you for joining in. Really appreciate it. YT is missed up now with your names. in comments it only shows your handles but in chat your name. Makes it all very confusing.
You're a Genius 👍🙂
I would not go that far!
This was Amazing and fun to watch! The blackout made me cuss my TV. LOL Good times. I have yet to rebuild a watch but I have a collection of a lot tools... yeah.... Anywho, Watching this one made me think a miniature game of Operation. Good Job on not letting one spring fly. Thanks for sharing!
If there was a buzzer that went off every time I went wrong that would be hilarious!! apologies for the "black out" really pissed off about that.
Well done Michael - handsome watch and nice videos
Thank you.
Ah, and I was going to say the green one...that's the doner...was my favorite! I had levels of definite anxiety as that stupid thing wouldn't wind. The troubleshooting is actually a great thing to master, but, not gonna lie, it does raise my blood pressure. 😂
Yes the green one is cool however the dial although looks good in close up its quite poor. Thinking of reviewing all 3 on the other channel in September.
What a dial! Thanks for this video. I love Ricoh’s and have a couple stunning quartzes myself. Cheers!
thanks, pleased you enjoyed this one.
Well played Mike, I was curious about this one, and you did the hard yards so we don't have to. Lovely result. My timegrapher ran by itself for around 5 min this morning, with no watch anywhere near it. Have you or anyone reading this ever seen that? Weird. Thanks again sir.😊
Thank you Keith. I’ve seen my TG run. On it’s one but only for a few seconds so I just assume it’s picking something up and interpreting it as a tick
@@MyRetroWatches this was running at 0 error for ages, leaving little straight lines on the screen, gave me chills. Everything is about frequency and vibration, I feel like I had company, if you know what I mean.
You might try a cordovan color leather strap. It might go well with the dial.
I am on the lookout for a ricoh to restore myself as I like those japanese movements (I started on Seiko and then moved onto Orient which is my favourite). nice job. will definitely be looking at your videos for hints and tips when I get one to tinker with ! thanks
Good luck with your Ricoh. Many are found in India on eBay but be a little weary of those as some are franken watches made up of a mix of parts and movements.
Amazing vid Mike! Loved seeing all your little issues! Well done figuring out the main issue. On day wheels I’ve experienced the issue you did getting it off. I use 2 pieces of rodico opposite each other, this balances out the lifting equally.
I like the mesh strap. If you could find a medium dark red leather strap, that might make it, just a thought.
Brilliant video Mike, thank you for sharing! Wow, a very interesting movement, and a fascinating journey deep into it and...back! Congratulations on your tenacity and attention to detail: really great video!! 🎉🎉🎉
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow fantastic job, pretty frustrating diagnosis
Great video Mike. I enjoy the verity in movements you are showing. The black band would be my choice of the two. I just began working with a similar microscope and find it difficult to adjust to the poor depth of field. It certainly has helped me see that my cleaning system needs work. Looking forward to the Omega. Cheers!
Your videos are great because you leave everything in, don't edit out mistakes etc. How did you polish the crystal, looks great, like the mesh strap??
Thank you. The crystal being acrylic is easy. I sanded it with 1000 grit to remove deep marks and then just used polywatch and cotton wool to bring it back to clear. 20 minutes tops.
Well it's a big thumbs up from me. I love the look of this one. The crystal is great (and I think we need to see facets return too), I love the colour of the dial, and even the standalone quickset pusher adds a bit of mystique (maybe?). I've almost pulled the trigger on a few that've passed by my eBay feed. Now I've got videos to refer to if I find a spares and repairs job! Well done on figuring out the reversing wheels, and thanks for another pair of great videos.
Endy! hope your well my friend Watch fair coming up early September!! Pleased you like this one. Interesting watch inside and out.
@@MyRetroWatches it's in my calendar, looking forward to it. See you there boss.
Definitely worth the effort & a job well done Mike . An interesting movement with some peculiar ideas but a nice watch , looked ok on the leather and maybe a tropics or shark mesh instead of milanesse?
Thank you. Eventually I will find a strap I will like on it but for now its already onto the next project :-)
Great videos, its a good looking watch.
I have the same one but with a Turquoise dial. Mine was purchased as new old stock and it came on a facetted bracelet. It looks really cheap so I fitted a Vario leather strap made for the Casio AE1200. It fits well i think, its thicker where it meets the shoulders tapers nicely towards the buckle. I'll have to post up a photo on watch crunch. 😃👍
Ps I quite like the mesh, I might get one for mine.
What is your name on Crunch? YT only shows your handle
Você sem dúvidas é inspiração para muitos. Como está a saúde? Abraço!
Ramón, SP Brasil
Thank you.
You are a more stubborn man than I :). I would have just pulled the rotor off and had a lighter manual wind watch. That is, if I was crazy enough to take up the hobby.
I think a thicker chunky meral strap would suit the watch better but only because it has a thicker/deeper case.
