Hoard of the Dragon Queen is a 2014 Forgotten Realms adventure module for the 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons, designed by Kobold Press and the Wizards RPG Team.
This video series is aimed at DMs who are about to take a bunch of players through this module and seek guidence and advice. It also might be interesting for any kind of player who isn't going to play it, thus not afraid of spoilers. - เกม
This is great, so many other videos just say "Hoard is bad and you shouldn't run it" but that doesn't help when I'm wanting to run a game about a dragon cult and the other modules don't really fit the bill.
This is the best chapter 1 walkthrough I have seen on TH-cam. Serious and straight forward. Perfect

@@LutesDice Three years later I do this too ;) Well, the problem I have is that although the party has used some of the backgrounds so "the cult" is the obvious suspect... however I am trying to send as many false signals and hints as possible to cloud the real goal behind it. The idea with dragon transformation is a good one and I will definitely use it :)

So question, im currently doing the same as you, im about to do for the first time and im using this campaign, so how did it go
@@calebdoss4590 After several COVID pauses, we're currently coming to the end of Chapter 4. It's overall been a lot of fun but I have had to do a lot of my own world building and research to expand what is a very slimline adventure. It's very railroad-y, which isn't inherently bad, but worth bearing in mind. I've used lots of opportunities for character building and roleplaying, which has made up for many of the books writing gaps. In hindsight, I don't think I would've picked this campaign as my first due to the amount of extra work I've had to put in.

I'm watching this to prep for my first dnd campaign where I'm the DM. I played this with friends years back as a player and now I'm laughing so hard at the combat balance. We bluffed our way through the entire town pretending to be cultists and it threw our DM off so much. It'll be fun to see how my new group of friends handle this. Thanks for the info!
*My hook to motivate players for this adventure;* play Lost Mine of Phandelver first, and replace _Greenest in flames_ for _Phandelver in flames_
I would advise having both Venomfang and Cryovain as part of LMoP so that you have early options to introduce the cult of the dragon.
Additionally, I replaced _The Black Spider_ by _Langdrosa Cyanwrath_
How did you fix the levels? The characters should be lvl 4-5 after LMOP, and if I understand this correctly HoTD starts on lvl 1.
Really appreciate the honesty here. You acknowledge that most people rate this adventure pretty badly, but rather than just saying don't buy it.... You give advice on how to make it better for people who feel like "they are stuck with it" after buying. (I didn't notice this the first time watching cuz I accidentally skipped the beginning 😅)

this is one of the better walkthrough's for a campaign I've found, and I have taken to referring to your videos on this game prior to running it with my players a day or so in advance so the core ideas are fresh in my mind. You touch on the cinematic and really give me a sense of tone to follow, and I really appreciate how you reference the smaller plot points (The importance of Leosin/Ontharr, Lennithon, etc.)

We had our goblin monk die to the half dragon. At the end of the fight he stabbed our monk who was unconscious, giving him one failed death save. My barbarian rushed in to help him but he was too slow to prevent the monk from rolling a critical 1 and dying

I am planning to run this through Fantasy Grounds - glad I found this video as a new (to 5e) DM. I played a lot of 2e back in the day and some 3.5e. I bought a ton of 4e and never got around to one game (lol). Now with COVID on our doorstep, I find I have more time and have purchased a bunch of 5e stuff to get back into this.
That's great. Hope you'll have some fun with it. 4e is very fun too, but you have to be open minded about it. It's a great system, that sadly got a lot of negative response. I've heard somebody say a pretty precise opinion about it, that 4e should have been called something other then "D&D", then there wouldn't have been any expectation issues. Anyways, 5e is a great way to get back into the game!
@@LutesDice - True, I really liked the simplicity of 4e. The whole "MMOing" of an RPG didn't bother me. I just wanted to adopt the system most are playing now. Also, Fantasy Grounds sadly doesn't have much for 4e on it.

I appreciate this video. Im running my own version of tyranny of dragons right now and i didnt like the travel from greenest north felt to long and i didnt want so many random encounter to be the source of my characters levelings. So i ran lost mine of phandelver making the black spider a wyrmspeaker who is looking for a dragon mask not the forge of spells. Allowing the players to help the town of phandahlin and fall in love with it before running greenest in flames as phandahlin in flames

Great video together with the structure helped me out alot. Also saw someone recommand that you should not do a siege on the city but some cult people hiding in the city and try and figuere out what they are doing and getting clues like that could be an option i think from what i have read this opening act is great.

Im about to be running this campaign in a few weeks after my party finishes up Dragon of Icespire Peak. Ive homebrewed some stuff here and here, and probably will continue to homebrew some stuff to fit the larger narrative i have planned. Super excited to run HotDQ!!

Will you come back to doing more episode reviews on the “Tyranny of Dragons” campaign? From what I’ve been told, it’s a difficult campaign to run and because of this not a lot of people cover it, let alone share how they made it more fun for the people they ran it for.
It would be awesome to hear your thoughts on the other episodes and how you believe it can be made more interesting for new players.

I plan to run this for my next adventure. My group already had a run in with the dragon cultists from the Lost mines of Phandelver when they killed Venomfang. I plan for them to meet an NPC needing body guards going to Greenest.

I plan on using this module as a template for a Web of the Wolf Spider Campaign. Basically the masks are replaced by the rod of seven parts and the cultists worshiping Miska the Wolf Spider and the Queen of Chaos. Hoping for good things!

I plan to Replace the town of the first chapter with Phandolin since this will be starting after my lost mines campaign.
I thought about that because I'm doing the same thing. But try this. Send a dragon to burn the town down. If they're invested enough in the city have them rally the townsfolk and go to Greenerst just for that town to be burning too. I have FULLY fleshed out the idea yet. But I'll return one day to lyk when we get there
I too, am planning to run Tyranny of Dragons for the first time and this video was really helpful, but in the book, I can see 7 missions including The Old Tunnel. Could someone explain to me what is the deal with it?

why not make the thunder dragon join the party like how you say it he really doesnt want to do it
my players are getting frustrated that they can't rest! Also, the book says they level up to level 2 when they enter the keep but RAW you need a long rest to apply the benefits of leveling up. That is confusing.

Don't give the suggested backgrounds, such as being an ex dragon cultist, give too much information at the beginning?
Not necessarily, depends entirely on your decisions. The PC could have been an "old school" cultist that had nothing to do with the current course of events. Or a low ranked one, that doesn't know much. Still, it could give some extra tools for blending in and infiltrating the ranks of the cult.
