- Act Your Age was one of the most highly anticipated episodes in the history of Phineas and Ferb's original seven-year run. But as the show is now coming back for a fifth and sixth season, does the last standard episode of the show's original run still hold up?

When this episode aired, I feel like most liked it cause it shows what the people wanted, essentially a conclusion and payoff to an ongoing ship. Overall, I still like it, but I totally understand why some feel eh about it. After time has passed, it has become mixed to most when thinking about things for too long 😅
I always thought Night of the Living Pharmacist was a perfect episode to have made Phinbella canon to begin with, and Act Your Age could be about Phineas and Isabella having been dating for a couple of years already, but Phineas fears that Isabella would leave him for not being mature enough, so he tries to act more like an adult but they end up going on a really boring date, and that's when Isabella tells him that he didn't have to change and she likes him the way he is, and the episode ends with them going on a ride in one of their crazy inventions. The moral of the episode would be that you can be mature but still like the things that you liked as a kid.

Regarding the Ferb/Vanessa stuff, I recall Dan responding to someone asking about it on social media stating that he'd dated an older woman when he was at Act Your Age!Ferb's age and thus didn't consider it to be too weird. And that is... also pretty concerning, to be frank
But did Dan know this woman since he was eight???

This episode makes even less sense anytime I think about it, also as I said on Tumblr, the gang are acting like Marinette's classmates which is automatically a red flag. Also Milly's design is horrible.
And Ferbnessa in this episode is legit my least favourite thing in the entire show lmao, should've gone the Dipper/Wendy route smh

on top of everything else making this episode seem OOC for most of the characters, the fact Phineas and Ferb don’t actually invent anything or really do anything besides talk is…? really adding to the fanfic feeling of this episode. it just feels Off.
YES! It feels like they've just become boring and uninteresting. It's like the whole highlight of the characters just made a poof and disappeared. They don't seem so alive when they were shown as children... Yes, it often happens in life that as you grow up you become uninterested in hobbies from childhood, but this is a show! Without creativity and passion for construction, they feel completely empty. We don't need to show the characters "realistically" in the form of serious nerds who only worry about relationships, as if that's the only thing they care about at all!
One of my biggest problems with Act Your Age, aside from *everything* that Ferb and Vanessa comes with... is it requires everyone, and I do mean everyone, acting out of character for it to even happen. I don't buy the crew not intervening sooner, I don't buy Phineas not at least trying something sooner... and I don't buy, given by how he responds when Isabella shows how she feels in ways that are impossible to ignore/miss even for him, that Phineas only developed feelings for her in high school. I always saw it as a more extreme example of the "We're reading the same book, but you're a few chapters ahead" thing.
This episode could have been fixed just by making it take place freshman year of highschool instead of right before college, I can't buy the idea that the fireside girls never tried to get them together before that point. Just make it highschool phineas is nervous to ask her to the homecoming dance. There you go.

seeing characters aged in to adults is a lot of fun especially if it stays canon . I feel that relationships for characters would work better if the characters got to age up slowly on the show at a rate of one year per one to two seasons. Having character age normally would give them time to tell there stories and avoid popular writing traps like "Never get married" and "Don't age in to adulthood" and "Never have kids"
people think Adults are "Unrelatable" for kids that the fun of an episode is "In high school" and that no one wants to see kids grow up. But I feel there are lots of lessons to learn as adults in relationships. Relationships are work there not an ending to a chapter. Your life continues. there is no Happily ever after. Life never ends.
also I wish people would get off stereotypes, tropes and self aware jokes and keep people ion character.
I think the "Age them to adults" thing was to avoid making teens have romances , which isn't realistic.
Another question, Will the new series be canon , retcon, reboot, or canon but before a certain point in time?
I also wonder if there will be a retcon, a reboot, or if we will be given two new seasons, as it was before
I watched the original and commented on it a short while back, and one thing I never replied about that I want to address before anything else- yes, in my headcanon-y mind to make things work a little better (since I never bought them being younger than 10 in the original show), all the characters took a two year gap for various jobs to get a jump start on college funds. Given how Isabella is shown working at her family restaurant, that’s covered. And I would imagine Ferb working with Linda and Phineas with Lawrence, Buford getting a bunch of odd jobs to give him ideas for film school, and we already know Baljeet was a college professor as well.
But to address the actual episode, I stand by “eh, it’s okay” like I said before. I can understand and even agree to some of the frustrations you have with the episode. Chief among them, the conflict and dryness of the Phineas and Ferb side of the story. Heck, even having my headcanon “they’re all actually 20” in mind, Ferb and Vanessa never worked for me. Entirely because one of the few bits of continuity the show had going, Vanessa and Monty, has to be undone entirely offscreen for it to work.
As a whole, one of this series’ weakest points, funnily enough for a show like this, is the continuity for stuff beyond the summer feels muddied up and contradictory to itself a lot. The first Christmas special and the New Years episode only work off Dan saying Doof had a relapse, which feels like it ruins the character development from Last Day of Summer. Or this episode, for a number of reasons, as you said. I know this is an episodic show and they didn’t have a roadmap of sorts for the story like the later series they did, but it feels like in the original run, any exploration of the characters post-summer has a majorly confusing timeline.
But yeah, I agree this isn’t one of their best episodes. Heck, the fact I have to use headcanons to make ANYTHING work further proves it works better as a fanfic. At the end of the day, though, there’s enough good in this episode that I cut it some slack.
Just my personal head canon that it goes like this
Summer 1: Season 1-2
Between summers: Halloween special, Christmas special, the new years special
Summer 2: 3-4
Now, how any of this is going to work after we get the next two seasons, even in my head canon... I dunno
This episode was definitely a fanfiction Isabella wrote about her and Phineas.
I figured that Phineas and Ferb (and Isabella, Buford and Baljeet) are around the age of 10: evidenced in "Phineas and Ferb's Quantum Boogaloo" where they travel 20 years into the future, and future!Linda tells that Phineas and Ferb are 30 now (and since AYA takes place 10 years in the future, that would make them 20 then). I feel that would kinda ease the Ferb/Vanessa thing a little since the age gap would be 6 years instead of 8 (meaning that if Ferb is 18 in AYA, Vanessa would _actually_ be 24, or if Vanessa is 26 in AYA, Ferb would actually be 20).
I think Dan Povenmire had also stated that Ferb and Vanessa begin dating at ages 19 and 23 respectively, so the age gap might even be 4 years.
But if you still think it's icky, that's fair.
Also the Milo Murphy's Law Season 2 situation is so much worse than the AYA early release since OVER HALF OF AN ENTIRE SEASON got released early in Japan, India, and NEARLY ALL OF EUROPE (instead of a single episode in just two countries), which was artificially delayed in the USA for no reason ("The Phineas and Ferb Effect" was supposed to come out in April 2018, but got delayed to January 2019. The Netherlands was also quite late, but even they beat the US by _three days._ How.)
Why would they all be 20 if they’re just going off to college, though? That makes no sense.
@@SunnylandProds I mean, they don't have to go to college _immediately_ after graduating from high school a few months prior. It's possible they want to take it slow and leisurely. And, maybe it's just Phineas, Ferb and Isabella taking it slowly: we know that only Phineas and Isabella will attend Tri-State State, while Ferb will be off to Oxford, Baljeet's apparently graduated from college, and Buford is going to attend film school.

@@SunnylandProds I know it sounds a bit weird, but I don't think it's entirely implausible, especially since Dan had stated in a TikTok reply that Ferb and Vanessa would be dating at ages 19 and 23. That already implies that Ferb took at least one year off.
Then again, I think part of this age confusion is due to the fact that officially speaking, Dan and Swampy have stated that Phineas and Ferb and friends are "less than 14" (14 probably being the bar because Candace is 14 until "Candace Loses Her Head", so it's to make sure Phineas and Ferb are younger than her), instead of giving them a definitive age. This makes the implied ages in things like AYA and Quantum Boogaloo quite confusing and sometimes contradicting, and also have fans disagree about the ages (some people think Ferb is 12 years old, others think he's 8, etc).

Here’s a unpopular opinion . I actually prefer milo Murphy’s law over Phineas and ferb. I think the jokes are a bit funnier , has some better character writing and progression in the story (and I find the songs more memorable) I think phineas and Ferb is solid as I did rewatch some a few weeks ago. But I the episodes I watched did have a few laughs but I don’t really rember what really happened besides the jokes and some basic story beats. But with milo I remember every single thing about it.

Not only is Ferb and Vanessa being a couple creepy. But it doesn't make sense whatsoever. Especially if you seen Summer Belongs to You and Drusselsteinoween.
When Ferb saw Vamessa leaving the Effiel Tower, I always assume that Ferb took it as a sign to move on. Even when Phineas asked Ferb what happened to Vanessa, Ferb's response confirms this. Though looking back, the fact that it implies that Phineas ships Ferb and Vanessa is creepy in its own right.
Even in Drusselsteinoween, when Ferb was singing Haunted by You, he probably knew Vanessa was dating Monty and dancing with him when he was singing the song and he was okay with it. Vanessa is happy and he moved on.
And then Act Your Age came along and goes. "HA HA SCREW YOU MONTY WE GONNA MAKE FERB AND VANESSA AN ITEM" EFF OFF Act Your Age. -_-
I have so many problems with Act Your Age and that Moment with Ferb and Vanessa was the worst of that episode just because of how creepy it was.

The episode needs to be reckoned when the show returns and Phinabella getting a proper payoff and not have the show's best characters screwed over. Isabella deserves better.

If they’re going to college then would make them 18-19 since that most kids start kindergarten at 5-6 years of ages. It also depends on your birthday and if you were held back.

So I was super involved in the deviantart PnF fandom in the buildup to this episode. At the time, I remember there was a group of people complaining about how most fanfics written in the fandom were just romance-centric Phinbella plots, with no actual inventing or summer shenanigans. It was kind of a big debate but there was a pretty strong opinion going around that PnF was not supposed to be romance-centric, it had to have a focus on inventing and enjoying summer, or else it didn’t feel like PnF.
So, you can imagine our collective surprise and disappointment when Act Your Age came out and was EXACTLY like all those dumb fics we complained about. Watched it once, when I was 16. Never watched it again. The only people who seemed to like the episode were the Phinbella-obsessed kids who wrote those fanfics in the first place. Since the fandom was full of those (and the rest were in denial about how bad the episode was), I thought for the longest time that I was the only one who hated it. Glad to see that’s not the case!
(Side note: I remember when Ashley Simpson was hired to do the character designs! She was a popular person in the fandom prior to that, and I personally interacted with her a few times. Super nice person. It was really exciting for all of us when she got to work on the show).
I recently did a video talking about why Hailey’s On It failed, and I talk about how they wanted Hailey and Scott’s relationship to be like Kim and Ron in Kim Possible without a strong understanding of what made Kim and Ron’s relationship work so well in the first place.
The problem with Phineas and Isabella is that I think they were so worried about messing with the status quo in the present because they 100% knew that the show would maintain its’ popularity and end up coming back someday. So now, do you retcon Act Your Age to try and do something more interesting with Phineas and Isabella? Or do you just kind of not address that ever again?

do we actually know ferb's age during most of the series tho? i always just assumed they were like 11 or 12, in which case the age gap is fine by the time he's 18 (only 3 years apart).
edit: nevermind, i guess the 10 years implies they were... eight years old during most of the series? i feel like that doesn't square at all, personally, but i guess it's possible
