I'm a young architectural illustrator and as someone who was never formally taught clouds, this will help my skyline paintings immensely! (I also loved your commentary, so don't quit that!) I followed step by step and after one practice round was able to incorporate it into my current piece: the UT tower in Austin against a beautiful sky! Thanks!!!!
I tried this and I'm so proud of the result!! I love that you do such a detailed running commentary on what you're doing, I think a lot of proficient artists forget that things like soaking up excess paint with your brush aren't obvious to beginners like me. You're a born teacher, and your cheeriness is infectious!
I have spent 30 yrs as a designer and small scale sculptor for the gift industry. I have employed every media out there as a professional artist but without a doubt watercolour is the most deceivingly difficult. Thanks for your help. Maybe soon I wont have to test the aerodynamics of my fluffy brushes so often. :)
It was a cloudy day here...thunder, lightning and the whole she-bang! It rained so hard the ground couldn't hold it and we found out too late, that it came into the basement. What a mess! I see new broadloom for the family room. Your clouds are really good and natural looking. Thanks for sharing this one...so easy to follow.
You're seriously an amazing teacher!! I watched a couple of videos explaining clouds and yours was by way the easiest to follow! And I love your constant chatter! It keeps my attention and engaged into the video and makes painting along with you a lot more fun!
Agreed. I'm curious as to how my own cloud-making will look after watching this video. Up till now, my clouds were a huge failure. Clouds are SUPPOSED to be blobby and yet my cloud-blobs were... just _blotches_. :/
Fun painting! I'm learning watercolor and your videos have been a great help. You're enthusiastic and fun to listen to. Love the way the clouds turned out. I'll have to try that.
I have just started to do water colors, thanks for the tips. I have tried my hands on two ictures, one glower vase, one landscape. You make it so easy. Nice have one on one teaching. I am a very new person to the class I have had three classes, but We will see. Thanks for the tips and making it seem easy. I will keep practicing.
Your grasses are called "Sea Oats". I loved what you taught today. I have never worked w/ watercolors. I usually use acrylics. This looks like fun. Your narrative made it fun & informative to watch. I have learned a lot. Thank you & God Bless.
Hey Lindsay, just subscribed to your channel. My wife and I have been watching and I for the first time put some paint to paper. I've never used watercolors before but after watching your tutorials I got brave. I love this one as I live a mile from the west coast and since I plan on painting beach scenes this was great. I painted my first sky I wish you could see as one cloud has a big wiggly thumbs up but I give you 2! thank you for inspiring!
Good explanation on the cloud perspective. Alaska is the same way in the Summer. Because of our long winters, we want to be outside as much as possible in the Summertime before it goes away.
These are exactly the type of clouds I love, and this video is definitely one to follow in the development of painting clouds, its straight forward and very uncomplicated.. Maybe you could demonstrate a sky with warm summer colours, of Maybe sunset with those orangey, purple colours? Brilliant work!
You are such an awesome painter Lindsay!!! Thank you so very much for sharing your talent with us!!! I'm learning so much from you...sounds like you've been painting a long time and are quite the teacher...keep up the great work!!!
You are so wonderful! I love the painting, I love your way of talking, and the video is so helpful and inspirational! (I 've been stuggling with clouds for years, thank you!)
Thank you so much!!!! When I was a kid I always dreamed about make something like this, I wanted to paint but where I live there's not schools of arts or paint classes, but now I can learn from your videos, I can't thank you enough!! 😊
Hello Lindsay your clouds are beautiful I wish could bring you to my class and show my students how lovely you make them you are such a Blessing to us have a great day.
Love it and your right you get so zoned in on all that is going on :) more people need to chill and leave their phone in the purse :) I shall paint the skies over Hampton Beach I have some killer shots from past storms :) thanks for the inspiration :)
Great pic as usual, I have a tip for carrying watercolours on the hoof!....I use the tablet/pull holders in a strip marked with days of week, that way can carry up to 7squirts of colour and they seal also. Regards from a drizzly UK .
I love all your painting videos! I am new to watercolor and i am learning a lot from your videos. I look forward to a new one everyday. And decided I am going to try and paint something everyday also. Thank You!
Sometimes I binge-watch so many of your videos that I _increase the speed to max_!! SO HILARIOUS!! 💖💖💖 (and of course I still learn things so it's all good). :-)
I love this, Lindsay, thank you so much! Could you do a scene with a seagull in flight? I'd love to see a seagull right in the middle of that beautiful sky. I'm definitely gonna try the cumulus clouds for my first painting this weekend. Thanks for all of your time and help.
Thank you a thousand times!!! I have been struggling with clouds - your tutorial is well done, well explained, and I actually think I might be able to do some now! Love ❤️ your videos. I have a playlist of Frugal Crafter on my TH-cam. 🤗
I was trying a watercolor technique on a card for the very first time yesterday. I used three colors of re-inkers (Stampin' Up) and when I was done, I was so excited about how well it turned out that I ran down to the store and bought some watercolor paints! Thanks for all the encouragement with watercoloring! I was using the ink over a black embossed tree and it was so fun to see the small design develop with the inks! Question: Should you always completely wet your surface before applying any color?
Thank you, thank you, thank you.....I could watch you all day long. You are so enjoyable and a great teacher. What was the mix you used for the gray....ultra marine blue for the top of the sky and then you touched your brush into perhaps a sienna brown? you also mentioned that if the paper being used was heavier weight - I use 140 cold press, that it wasn't necessary to always wet and stretch prior? I find I tend to not know how much stretching I should do and I leave the imprints of my fingers along the edges.....too much stretch??? It doesn't seem to help NOT make the paper wavey when doing a wash for the sky etc.
My 1st several attempts at clouds resulted in pilling - as a beginner I didn't know that everything labelled 'watercolour pad' at my local craft stores was cellulose paper & not cotton. As a result I have many paper pads I still need to use up, so I've been practising lifting with different things to see what pills least on cellulose paper - my favourite so far is those round, dry cotton disks for removing make-up. They're absorbent, v gentle on the paper & super-cheap & they'll help me progress thru my pile of "watercolour pads". (I've also treated myself to a tiny Arches cotton pad from the city art store, to treat myself occasionally).
Thanks for great video. I'm going to use it for inspiration background for a get well card for my brother-in-law who is seriously ill in I.T.U. after an attack on him at the weekend.
Amazing video & thank you for sharing it with us. You make it look so easy but I haven't even tried my watercolours yet...too much more to learn, & I don't know which type of brushes to buy. Can you please tell me what kind you were using here. I know you mentioned them but now I've forgotten? Also, you mentioned a 'Stretching Your Paper' tutorial you've done. Can you please provide me with that link so I can watch it too? Thank you again. Keep up these great tutorials!
I went along with this tutorial and I painted my first watercolor painting EVER. It's absolutely hideous and somehow turned a purple-ish color. I had to laugh. BUT--I had a blast doing it! Going to do more clouds again and more painting. Thank you so much for the inspiration.
As long as you had fun, that's the most important thing. Maybe you got a couple of complimentary colors mixed together and wound up with a little "mud." You'll learn after a while. Remember to not dip one color into another unless you're intentionally making a new color out of others. It's all just a learning process.
I just love this! Been very frustrated lately with my painting and I keep going over it and over it refusing to let the canvas win!!! I needed the perspective you have shown. Can you show us how to apply light? Shadow and light?
Thanks so much for this Lindsay :) Clouds are not my strong point! I normally paint in acrylics but got some watercolour paper the other day so this will be my first project as a practice!
Beautiful tutorial and clouds. No one else remarked that they get nervous when they see clouds like that. To me they look like the kind of clouds that mean turbulent winds are above them. In Tornado Alley that usually means trouble and I start checking the weather channel. I would have to do the horse tail ones--cirrus clouds, they are nice and safe.
You've made clouds look really easy to paint, Lindsay :). I've been looking at a 'budget' set of Royal & Langnickle sable/camel brushes on ebay for under 5 pounds, not too sure what that is in dollars but not a lot :). I'm thinking they will be just right for the beginner that I am :)
I was going to tell you that the weeds are called 'Sea Oats', but Fuzzybuddy already caught that one. I have always loved your clouds...one can get lost in them.
thefrugalcrafter . Your welcome. No, I didn't, but I'm grateful to whoever did :-).. Have you ever watched any videos on homemade travel paint kits? Not that you would need it, but maybe those who have very restrictive budget would (Cathy Johnson's is my favorite). One more thing...don't throw those clouds into the bin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
I love your channel!!! I has given me a lot of inspiration on my watercolor paintings! I have a question for you........ When u let your paints dry on your pallet when you are re filling, do you leave the pallet open or closed? Thanks so much!!
I have a question, does this work on canvas? Does it give the same result? I haven't tried it yet but I would like to learn. Thanks, your talking is very informative keep it up, and thank you for doing this is AMAZING.
Nice tutorial! I will have to try this...soon. How do you clean the mixed paint off your palette? I saw you make a tag with a puddle once, but what do you to clean it when you can't reuse it?
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich i really love watching you paint you paint such pretty landscapes when i try to paint with you all my colors seem to plend and turn to mush i cant seem to keep things separate or create distance

Well said. My thoughts exactly.

Your happy go lucky personality and skillful tutorials are a breath of fresh air. That's why I keep watching as a beginner.

I enjoy watching your tutorials. You are always such a fun and happy painter while introducing watercolor techniques.
Gorgeous Linds! Makes me want to be on that beach.
Fun painting! I'm learning watercolor and your videos have been a great help. You're enthusiastic and fun to listen to. Love the way the clouds turned out. I'll have to try that.
I love your videos. They are easy to follow. I like that you explain about using paints and tools that one can afford.
Love your tutorials, they make water colors look so simple and fun. Your "practice" paintings are nice enough to frame and hang.
Purely your opinion as to the narration of the video. I value the insight into what Lindsay is thinking as she goes along.
The use of the filbert to create the clouds was a great idea. I loved the finished result. Thanks.
Hi! I'm new to watercolors and this is my first how to video...what a great help this will be for all my future endeavors in water coloring!
Thank you, your style is as refreshing as your talk. Most practical and helpful for me.
Alaudin Osman thank you:)

only if you want blendy colors, you have more control on dry paper and more blending on wet;)
Thanks Lindsay!
When I paint, Silence is golden!

Thanks for the tutorial I've never quite figured out ow to add heading to the clouds I painted.
amazing teacher!

thanks Karen, did you request that one?

i really love your art work! i was also wondering if you ever start out with your paper dry, and not add water before you add pigment.
yes, it depends on what I am painting:)
ok thank you!!
10 gold stars a big thumbs up andvthank you x
I love your channel!!! I has given me a lot of inspiration on my watercolor paintings! I have a question for you........
When u let your paints dry on your pallet when you are re filling, do you leave the pallet open or closed? Thanks so much!!

Great video!!! Thank you
Nice tutorial! I will have to try this...soon. How do you clean the mixed paint off your palette? I saw you make a tag with a puddle once, but what do you to clean it when you can't reuse it?
spray with water and wipe with a rag;)
Very well done and nice clear instructions. Could you please let me know where you got such a deal on the brushes? Thanks for sharing
