I've been to many beaches along the lake, Presque isle is nice if you enjoy wildlife, bike riding, walking and seeing nature in general, but I don't think it's the best beach, it's pretty rugged, kinda dirty, not terrible, but definitely not the best, it's more natural than anything, which means you will encounter lots of rocks, sticks and shallow shorelines. Headlands is groomed and very large. It's about the closest thing an Ohio person would get for something similar to a popular ocean beach. About 25 minutes east from Headlands there is also Geneva state park beach, which is groomed and also large.
There is no reason to be jealous of the lighthouse owner, you could have bought it yourself. It was 4sale for a very long time. Our family doctor told us if we ever go swimming at that beach, he would refuse to be our family doctor - probably had something to do with Diamond Alkali. Its been cleaned up quite a bit since then. You probably rode by our old house on the way there.
Mentor Headlands is a dirty beach and you can not walk through the sand without tripping over a bunch of sticks or dead fish scattered throughout the beach. lol

I grew up in the Headlands and surfed that beach 1967. And was a Lifeguard there. Great stomping grounds, growning up. Brings back great memories
