- January 3rd, 2020 (session 3) -- A somewhat productive AND STRESSFUL fishing session! I went out to catch some cutbait for bigger Species of fish and ended up ranting about one of my pet peeves. Read more about it below:
Did you know that...?
🤬 ...as a responsible angler, you should always manage your fishing line waste! When you get snagged, you should try to get as much line in as possible before cutting it. Never throw your line in the water or on the ground! If you are using monofilament, try to find a line-recycle bin to dispose it into. The bottomline is: don't litter! Fishing line can kill many different types of wildlife out there.

🤬 ...as mentioned in the video, you should use sustainable types of baitfish for bigger species of fish. If a species is vulnerable, threatened, or in decline, avoid harvesting and killing it. Examples of such species include the American Shad, Hickory Shad, Alewife, Blueback Herring, American Eel, etc.

One time I was pulled over by the cops and was asked if I had weapons in my trunk. I soooooooooooo wanted to say, "Not tonight, officer."
EPF, I know the feeling. I used to be a chef and carry around a chef knife. I would get pulled over occasionally and soon as they saw my 🔪 they would call for back up lol. Everyone is so paranoid!!!
God it must suck to live in those type areas, when I get pulled over, I am just an "FYI I a have a rifle under the back seat of the truck and here is my carry permit for my pistol", they do not blink an eye.

Most professional ichthyologists will agree that blunt force trauma is the quickest way to kill a fish. If you're around a hard substrate like concrete, slamming the fish against it as hard as you can will dispatch a fish immediately. A lot of people cannot stomach this so cutting it is fine,,,as long as you do it in the right place.
I love how you're teaching us Latin fish names. Maybe put a reel outside the rod case... to deter the snowflake calls and subsequent piglets.

Good old blue green algae, got to love those negligent farm practices...
And lawn owners who use a lot of chemicals, R T! People love their lawns juicy and green and shiny...but all that chemical runoff goes with the rain and create algae blooms in local ponds and lakes.

Yeah those algea blooms were at quite a few of my Jersey spots last year... nice size shiners too, it takes some serious skill to know how to catch those. When you know how to catch baitfish, you're set for life. Great video - cwlfishing

I hate fishing line being left to. Why can’t they pull until line breaks at the hook. Also pisses me off when people leave line all over the bank and animals end up getting stuck in the line. You the man Leo, keep up the great videos!

You are to be commended for addressing "fish pain". I'm a Florida surf fisherman and have concluded fish do NOT feel pain in a human or mammal way. If one believes in some sort of a grand design then there's no way the design would have birds like Pelicans swallow fish straight into gastric acid or have an Osprey peck out the eyes of a catch while it's still wiggling in its talons. Food for thought ! A pun ! I some times have to explain this to squeamish beach walkers who proclaim "Oh that poor fish" Nah lady it's fine ! lol

Here in Northern California our lake has been infested with blue green algae in the summer time. The Cyanobacteria in the lake could cause flu like symptoms in people if a person were to ingest it. Pets could potentially have seizures and/or die. The hard part is Cyanobacteria is tough to know if it releases toxins when it blooms unless tested in a lab for such toxins. Did a whole college research final presentation for a biology class on the blue green Algae.
I’m always cleaning up line, sometimes there’s a bobber or weights attached that I keep, I also constantly find spilt circle hooks that weren’t picked up. I’ll never buy a circle hook in my life. I like to think I’ve saved some critters some paw injuries

I used to work on McGuire A.F.B. As such,I used to go to the fort dix dump from time to time. I used to pick up empty law rocket tubes from there and would occasionally have one in my truck. Those tubes would have made a fine small rod case😂

I like to birdwatch and it freaks people out to see someone with binoculars, so I started carrying my bird field guide in my backpack, in the outer transparent pocket so random people and cops will see it and leave me alone.

Dude, Those shiners @ 5:50 on a bobber about a foot - foot and a half and you will catch Channel Catties! Live line them next time, it's amazing! Right off that bridge, at night, when the barometer is changing or especially dropping. I learned that from a guy I used to fish Churchville reservoir with YEARS ago.
Hey Leo, good stuff as always. Thanks for all the tips. I know you are interested in getting a musky for your life list. Check out a place called cave run lake in KY. When they dammed the river a bunch got stuck in there, creating a pretty good population. The river(licking) coming from it has an ok population too. Thanks again.

Oh yeah, Tina! Live or cut, Creek Chubs are great bait. The Flatheads, in particular, love a live Creek Chub.

Beware "Killer algae" in that jersey pond. Jersey has issues with some watersheds. They closed Lake Hopatcong down on the 4th last year due the "killer algae". A year or 2 b4 that someone said they saw an Anaconda swimming around as well. Lmao!!! I swear. I grew up there, that's why I live in P A now. :)
