- Classic Mini Restoration Episode 20 - Upgrades To My Clarke 135 TE Mig Welder
A few improvements to the Clarke 135 TE Mig Welder which Ive found are helping to improve my welding. It just helps to give me a little bit more control over my welds which hopefully means doing a better job at the end of the day.
Thanks to everyone who's helped so far with advice, including the facebook groups Madd Old Minis and Mini Classic 1959 to 2000, another big shout out to Dennis at Classic and Retro Restorations for his help and a huge thank you to everyone who support my channels via Patreon.
Thanks for watching and a special thank you to my Patrons David Shrive, Charles France, Mad Hamish, Chris Gilboy, Barbara Joseph, Neil Hammett, Ryan Davies and all of my other Patrons.

Practice practice practice
And then more practice 😊👍
I was only looking to find out how to change the gas on my 135te, but now im thinking about getting a proper regulator too...
Good video.
Yeah the one that came with it wasnt great. Im not sure why they dont provide a decent one straight from the box, maybe its a way to keep cost down. But a nice little upgrade for sure.
Really helpful video about how to upgrade - thanks for the tip about Welders Warehouse, great customer service from them!
Your welcome. Unfortunately even with all the gear and practice I struggled to do an adequate job on the car 😔 and had to give the shell to a pro. But it wasn’t the gear…it was me 😊 More practice required
Nice video Lee, hope the restoration is coming along well 😊
We see a bit of room on the back of that welding trolley though 🤔😆
Thanks. Im not having much luck with my welding of the bodywork :-) Its not as easy as it looks but its made more difficult that Ive been having to weld outdoors which I think has been the biggest cause go my issues...British weather isn't always so kind.
Do you have a link to the new regulator
I’m trying to think where I got it from. Feels like so long ago. I think it was the Welders Warehouse online?
@@SmugwoodMini cheers I've got a bit of welding to do on my mazda and have read the regulator is not good.
The original regulator seems to be more like on/off…even though it’s obviously not designed that way. When I changed mine I had more control, I could see how much was left in the cylinder and probably saved on gas because it wasn’t on full. The original will work but lacks proper control 👍
@@SmugwoodMini do you know what pressure you set the gauge too please?
@@ddsrkent I can’t remember sorry. I just did some test welds and used what suited best to be honest.
You really need to move way way way slower when doing that plugweld. If that just melts through everything, lower the current.
If you move that fast you just throw a bead ON the panel with no penetration at all.
Also with the example of the shovel: even when it's just a tack, press the button for 2-3 seconds to allow decent penetration.
Thanks. I think part of my problem was changing gas and having the wind on me all the time. I sort of developed a technique that worked in certain conditions then went against me when I’d made changes and the first technique stuck with me. Now I’ve changed gas and hoping to weld under shelter…it looks like I have quite a few changes as like you say…probably a bit to fast. Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of control with the welder settings so a little more practice is definitely required.
@@SmugwoodMini every welder has at least 2 adjustable settings: current and wire speed. That's basicly all a beginner needs to change. Find a setting that works with a slow movement.
Again, if you move fast, the weld won't penetrate and will have no strenght at all.
