The picture of Jim Morrison in their hiding place is quite symbolic. Morrison was only 27 when he died, so he quite literally is eternally young now. However, he is also an example of how eternal youth is not worth dying for.
Also, the name "Lost Boys" is a reference to Peter Pan. In the original play/novel it is constantly hinted that Neverland is a place for dead children. Even Peter himself never touches anyone. The lost boys of Neverland yearn and ache for a mother, just like these vampire kids. Being truly lost also means having no one to guide you or a shoulder to cry on when things get scary or overwhelming.

I thought it was interesting that this movie almost directly mirrors Neverland and the ideas presented in the original Peter Pan story (not the Disney version, but the original book). The Lost Boys never grow up, and while Peter is similar to a "father figure", having been there the longest, they long for someone to love them, a mother, who they seek in Wendy. I think this movie, while obviously twisting it, also follows that they probably just want to be loved and accepted. They're forever teenagers, and that's all that teens really want, deep deep down. Love and acceptance.

90s too, as those of us who grew up on "Goosebumps" and "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" can attest. It's always been a hallmark of horror stories with kids or teens as protagonists. They're very much coming of age stories where kids have to deal with the threat on their own because adults tend to be oblivious, useless or just plan antagonistic.

Stranger Things brought this back in a big way, though other movies and shows did it; ST was a phenomenon, and influenced many shows since.
The ‘Fear Street’ trilogy certainly used this trope, and hardly had any adults do anything until the third movie. I really enjoyed it in the first movie, like a throwback to Monster Squad, and especially with main characters actually getting killed, before the seemingly small victory.
The other two weren’t very good, but the first Fear Street movie was a fun twist on 80’s tropes.

    • @thehitherto5348
      @thehitherto5348 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@CorbCorbin My favorite example of this in newer films is The Babysitter, which had the young protagonist handling the problems (almost) all by himself. It even had that stereotypical surburbian setting. Then there's Summer of '84 which had a GRIM deconstruction of this trope.

It's as if he was seeking out a mother figure to help them connect on some level with the world around them so that they can live a whole life as immortals. I also love the symbolism of the Emerson brothers in this movie and their relationship. Often in cinema you see these sibling relationships types portrayed to resemble light and darkness so it has a bit of a religious undertone; its very Cain and Abel. Good and evil; innocence and sin. A loving sibling rivalry, one popular and cool while the other is a bit of a geek yet intelligent. Younger brother Sam is human, he is the light (his light colored wardrobe reflects this too and he's always walking around in the sunlight) and is drawn to the self proclaimed vampire hunters who are essentially there protect light from darkness. Michael, the older brother (who is slowly becoming one of the undead and found mostly wandering at night and in the shadows), is drawn to Star, David and his group who are all vampires embracing the darkness. Again his black leather wardrobe is a major character detail. But unlike the other vampires, Michael is trying to fight his blood lust and darkness within which he's able to do this because of Sam. The brothers balance one another out and its their love/bond with one another that proves stronger than the opposite sides of the spectrum. For me this was my favorite takeaway of the film even though I'm a sucker for classic horror and the 80s :)

My dad would introduce me to the fun 80s slashers and gems, but every now and then my mom would show me some really good ones, and The Lost Boys was one of the first horror films she introduced me to. It was so much fun watching it at a young age and I still quote it to this day! RIP to Corey Haim, Edward Herrmann, Joel Schumacher, and Brooke McCarter

Lost Boys has always been something of a conundrum for me. I think you summed it up perfectly when you said it was genreless. This perhaps explains my mixed feelings about it. I was born in 74 so I was the demographic for this but despite enjoying it at the time of release, I always felt a bit of hesitation when confronted with watching it again. It captures beautifully the atmosphere and attitude of the 80s and is up front about revelling in it's Goonies approach to handling adult themes, but there has always been something missing and I have never considered it a horror film. For me, the success of Lost Boys is a combination of elements and being released at the perfect time is a big part of it. It was always very popular with all my female friends and remains so, my wife, who has to be dragged kicking and screaming to watch a vampire film, still talks about it fondly. This could easily be explained away by the heart throb cast but I dont think it would have had the same impact without the soundtrack, humour and characters. And therein lies my problem, the Vampire element to this is purely cosmetic, the coming of age nature of the film and the feeling of the end of summer always felt in conflict to a movie that deals with mass murder within a small town. That said, I think foldly of this movie and it is telling that I can rememeber where I was and who I was with every time I saw it.

I have seen The Lost Boys over 200 times, and needless to say-I love it. I wish I could have been there to watch your first watch, lol.
The script originally called for children instead of teens. A lot more trivia is in the comments, so I won't repeat it here.
That being said-movies like this have the symbolism we put into them. I have heard so many theories: a movie about AIDS, a movie about homosexuality(because God forbid a bunch of men just be friends, ffs), a love letter to old tropes, etc.
I just love the movie because it is about people that were my age at the time, liking things that I liked, and being the heroes defeating true evil we all wanted to be at that age. That's why I loved your analysis better than anyone else's. No one has the right/wrong answer. Everyone's takeaway(not the mind game Chinese kind) is the right one. That is why it is a classic.
That and one of the best soundtracks ever released.

The year was 1987. I was 16/17 and it was definitly the year of the vampire flick for me for 2 different reasons.
There was the lost boys which is fun and spoke to me as a teenager, running around and exploring my limits. It has the coolest vampire in Keifer Sutherland, it has Nanook and it has 'Death by stereo'. I also had the soundtrack on tape which I wore thin in my Walkman.
Then there was Near Dark which to this day is for me one of the greatest vampire flicks ever made. This to spoke to me as someone who left home and was vulnerable. It's pacing, the sense of danger, the need to belong no matter the risk. This film truly is 'finger licking good'. I also had the soundtrack to this and still do as I love the music of Tangerine Dream.

Oh man, you have no idea how nice to hear that I wasn't the only 90's-born individual who didn't appreciate earlier movie genres. In middle school especially, as I gained more awareness of my preferred tastes in film, I remember literally telling my mom that I didn't want to watch anything older than the mid-to-late 90's, as I was born in 1999. Of course, silly me didn't realize she'd already been well accustomed to such "distant relics," like how her favorite Beauty and the Beast movie came from 1986, or that her much-loved Scooby Doo Where Are You? aired during 1969-1970. I developed a more appreciative and open taste as I got into high school (like when I saw Dracula Untold back in 2014 and it had me so hyped I told Mom that I wanted to watch the Bela Lugosi classic), but with how much of a film lover I've become nowadays, I was admittedly embarrassed to remember that I used to think that way. But now knowing that *you* of all people Ryan used to have that mindset as well, I'm less so. 😊✨

THE LOST BOYS is a classic.
As Ryan points out, one of the more interesting things about the film is how AMBIGUOUS it is when all is said and done.
Think of the end of the movie, out of nowhere Grandpa drives backward smashing through the wall of his own house, killing the master vampire. Then while everyone else is celebrating, he just walks to his fridge, grabs a root beer and says: "One thing about Santa Carla I never could stomach... all the damn vampires."
    Roll Credits.
That... is ten thousand questions that will never be answered: He knew about the vampires? How did he know? Why didn't he warn any of them? Is there more to this character than we suspected? Et cetera.
And that's one example, the film has a lot that goes unexplained.
Contrast that to today where *Everything* has to be explained to the audience in detail, every point covered, nothing unexplained, nothing left to their malnourished imaginations at all.
Sometimes the best thing to do, is leave the audience hanging on the last word... and let them fill in the rest of the sentence.
    Thank You for Reading.
