Tap a hole in the pipe. Use a spacer behind the pipe and fasten it this way instead. Do it on the whole pipe system. Also use a wooden dowel (broomstick or paint roller extension) to connect the pipes. You will be able to roll them from one end to another. Great look!

This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection th-cam.com/users/postUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.

Sweet project!, maybe add some cork to the left door for a place to pin up stuff.
With regards to the conduit. I had two ideas.
    1. Drill a hole in the conduit large enough for the head of the screw on the out/face side and only the shank of the screw on the connection side, then just screw through the pipe. Looks like your wheels wouldn't be disrupted by it.
2.Just face screw though the conduit with a shiny screw and the color will blend it. Like a kreg screw or something.
Thanks for sharing it with us!

Dude, this garage is an O.C.D. dream come true. I love it. In regards to the fix of the midway screw; would just drilling a hole through the center of the pipe and then screwing through the pipe and into wood behind work? You could even put a small washer on the back side if you need the space.

Raynola Dominguez that’s exactly how I’d fix it I drill off center toward the bottom of he pipe. Or cut the claps in half and use a self drilling screw

Drill a hole in the conduit just slightly bigger than the screw you want to use, and then land your screw. Its kinda hidden at that height so it should look good. Hope that makes sense. Nice build! Super cool and looks really functional.

5:14 Drill through the pipe the secure the pipe. Use 2 screws 1 or 2" apart for extra support. To hide the screws, drill a big enough hole for the screw ends to pass and secure against the inner wall of the pipe.

  • @bryantTheFatBadger

A lot of good ideas for the track support here already, I might suggest something like this, staying with the industrial theme... drill a hole for a 3/8 bolt (or 1/2” depending on size of piping used) through the pipe and through the 2x4 behind it. Get a t-nut and hammer it into the hole in 2x4 to receive the bolt that you put through the pipe. The length of the bolt depends on the distance between face of pipe and full depth of t-nut. That would give you integral mounting, allow the rollers on top to move freely, and keep an industrial look. Now, the only potential catch point is how much the head of the bolt protrudes, you may just need to shim your hanging bracket/roller assembly slightly to set away just a touch further that it already was. Just an alternative idea.

Great application of chalkboard paint in the shop. You might want to paint both sides of your MDF sheet. Depending on the humidity the sheet will eventually twist somewhat if it’s sealed on 1 side and not the other. Ideally paint/seal 360°.

I did something similar in my garage (I even have the same storage bins!) but instead of a solid door I did a slat wall. I have all my yard tools hanging on it. Instead of barn door hardware I made a channel at the top out of 1x4's and used small furniture glides on the door itself. I was really worried it wouldn't slide or that the door would come out of the channel but I haven't had any problems. It holds a lot of heavy tools and works really well.

I love the barn door hardware idea! I made a gantry for filming in my shop using similar materials and I just used a coved piece of wood to support the underside of the pipe every few feet. It wasn’t supporting as much weight as this is, but I bet a similar idea would work.

If you drill a 3/8" hole on the outer side of the pipe and a 1/4" hole on the inner side of the pipe, you can secure the pipe without using a screw below the pipe. The outer hole has to be larger so that you can fit the screw bit to put the screw in the inner side of the pipe. This way the screw head will be inside the pipe and it won't interfere with the sliding of the barn doors. I really like your design. Great job!

Since you're using conduit hangers already you could take one and cut it in half to use as a cradle for the middle of each rail. Not sure if you would have a clearance issue but it should be rigid enough to hold the rail up but won't obstruct the roller.

you never put coping on a skate park ramp before? ....drill a hole on the outside so the screw head can go through the pipe then a smaller hole on the inside of the pipe for the screw, this will make it tight without pinching the pipe and no screw sticking out of the outside

To hold up the bar, you could try screwing a screw through to into the wood on the other side. Drill a 1/4" hole in on 1 side of the bar, large enough to for the screw head to fit into. Drill a 1/8" hole on the other side for the screw to go through, into the wood. With this method, you can have screws going all along the bar, without it interfering with the hanging doors.

    • @AdrianDWolfe
      @AdrianDWolfe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Haha was thinking this so I knew there would be someone else with the same idea already. Will have to do it this way and see how it goes for me.
My only concern is the two holes reducing the strength of the bar.. but that probably depends on how much weight you're actually putting on it in between screw placements.. 🤷🏾‍♂️

  • @ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt

Ben, simply drill holes parallel with the floor/perpendicular to the frame through the conduit. Using long pan head screws, insert them though the holes, add washers as spacers between the conduit and frame, and screw directly into the frame. Alternatively, regular screws can be countersunk flush with the conduit. Either way, there shouldn't be any interference as the rollers roll along the top of the conduit.
To drill conduit, cut a V-groove in a scrap piece of lumber and drill a small hole from the crotch if the V through the block. Then, placing the V-groove over the conduit, simply drill a pilot hole through both walls of the conduit. Lastly, enlarge the holes to the desired size utilizing the pilot holes.

  • @chriswearing50

This is a great project and has loads of potential for any workshop. I do have a suggestion regarding the sliding mechanism. Instead of having the doors hang off the conduit you could have doors that are a bit longer with wheels on the bottom which run in tracks secured to the floor. These would bear the weight of the doors and all that you hang on them. Then, you could put wheels at the top of the doors, again in tracks but these would just be to guide the doors. I think doing this would give you doors that are more stable and able to carry a lot more weight.. Hope someone out there finds this of use.

To replace the screw bracket, I would drill a hole through the center, where I want to apply my support component, and use a bolt/ washer/ nut, to fasten the rail to the stud. Im actually going to try your design in my garage, so I'll see if I know what Im talkin' about! Wish me luck

My suggestion would be through screws. By that I mean: drill a hole all the way through the pipe but have the front hole be larger that the screw cap. That way you are screwing the pipe using the inside most hole directly to the wood. However, you might need a thicker pipe for sturdiness.

Instead of clips, run a square strip of wood, or a strip with a routed groove in it, under the whole length of conduit/pipe - supporting the whole thing. You only need the top of the pipe. Or make short “under brackets” the same way and space them out to show off the fancy piping.

This was my suggestion as well... I will be making some verion of this, and will use a strip with predrilled holes, countersunk, and routed with a circular bit to fit the pipe size exactly (at least thats the goal... We used a v-block and some screws to make much longer casters for a sliding rig I built. Just drill through and counter sink the head so they sit flush below the surface. Use spacers as needed on the back side, ideally a piece of notched tube, but just nylon spacers would probably work.

It all came out great. About the screw that you are basically using to support the conduit...maybe you could make a cute little wooden bracket and use that as support by attaching it to the vertical piece of wood or there are similar' L' brackets made of some sort of metal that are small and have pre-drilled holes. I hope you get my drift. (Love your work by the way).

A scrap piece of 1/2 “ emt. Can be used as an coupling by sliding it inside the 3/4. You may have to use some tape to snug it up. If the straps are in the way, use a 1/4x20 hex nut ( or bigger if needed ) between the tubing and the shelf and run a screw directly thru the conduit.

I did something very similar to this in my workshop. The differences between yours and mine is:
    1. I used copper pipe.
    2. I drilled holes in the copper pipe to mount it directly to the frame using screws (with a 1/8" spacer behind for separation).
    3. I screwed a small block of wood below the pipe so the door would be held to the casters and not come off the pipe accidentally (My children were small, so it was safer).
Other than that, a very similar build.

L shaped brackets or U shaped curtain rod holders would be a good alternative to the screws supporting the pipe

They sell conduit mounts that should work for that bar- in the electrical areas of the hardware store.

If it has not been suggested already just use a conduit strap that is cut a little shorter than half the width of the pipe or just low enough that the rollers do not hit it. This will dress up the screw you used as a support and give continuity with the other conduit straps.
    Nice build btw

ey Mike, lovely work. Did you add anything to keep the doors from swinging out at the base?

Great video! I have that same Ryobi chop saw you were using at the 2:40 mark. Do you have video or plans for the mount it was on? That thing is really cool. Thanks!
