i am so much glad that people like you share your knowledge and ideas with beginners like me. I like a lot your videos. thank you and greetings from Colombia. Bye.
I finally know what the ruling pen is for! I've had one for years, passed on to me from my grandfather and I never knew what to do with it. Now when I finally need to paint straight lines I find out I already had the tool I needed!
Wow! I bought a ruling divider some time ago but didn't know how to use it. I have quill pens but didn't know to load it with a brush! Your tips are so useful! Sometimes just getting the tool isn't enough, it's not always self evident how to use it well. II also bought a flexible rule and that has a small lip on both sides, it's about 1/4" thick, very soft and bends easily into curves. So technical elements on curves could also work using that.
I know when I need to find an answer to watercolor questions, I can probably find it here. Thanks for covering so many great tips for watercolor students.... Happy for your milestone of 100,000.00 subscribers.... Congratulations!
I have learned so much from your videos. You are very easy to understand and very down to earth. Your honest and you don't make newbies feel stupid like some do. Your work is beautiful and very inspiring. Thank you so much..
I went to school for graphic design and we used to do a lot of posters and illustration with lettering and used a lot of ruling pen with gouche and watercolour.
I have a Graphics background and the ruling pen brought back memories. I did not know about the brush and raised ruler technique, interesting . I liked the artists tape and the variagated band demo... I must give these a go in the future.....thanks...Lorraine.
Very cool. Thx for video. I'm new to watercoloring and need more fine, (but curved lines, like for flower steps and vibes. Maybe I need a higher quality brush or watercolor pen/pencil.
Wow! Your bridge looks a lot like my Logan Team System mat cutter. Granted, that's 40" long but I am tempted now to get the 24" one too for painting. If I put it upside down there's a lip about like your green metal bridge!
Loving your video's and even tho' I have been painting for about 9 yrs. I'm learning lots of tips and tricks from you! And even some tips for my YT video's. Thanks!!!
Really enjoying your videos!! You mentioned that dipping pens only give an artist a fine line, but there are really wide calligraphy quill pens (with exchangeable nibs) that give you a variety of widths. Also, what is "burnishing" the edge of the tape?
I love your videos so much....I learn so much from you and feel that I have really gotten better as an artist because of your lessons. With that, I also wanted to ask, is there a particular pencil artists use to make their drawings before they paint, I've seen most of them in a red color? I was thinking it was just a watercolor pencil but then, why do artist always use red (at least from what I've seen). Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us!! You are so talented and I feel like I'm getting a true art class when watching your videos, so thanks again for your time in helping other beginning artists learn all the tips you have found over the years!! You rock!
Some artists draw with a lighter color pencil to avoid messy erasures. Red, light blue, orange are all common even light gray marker. Animators and comic artists in particular do this. You can draw loosely, correct your forms without erasing and the lines will never darken. They usually will then go back over the colored lines with a final standard pen or pencil to define the final drawing. This is a technique used more with working out a drawing before than what you put down on watercolor paper. For that, I just use an HB pencil or lighter to put the drawing down on watercolor paper.
+The Mind of Watercolor thank you very much, you are absolutely without a doubt my favorite artist on TH-cam!! I learn more from you than anyone else, and it feels like I'm getting the education I would need if I went to school for art....personally, I am 34 (shhhh!!!) and went to school for psychology for bachelors, after working in the field for 10 years I got incredibly sick, I found out that I had SLE Systemic Lupus Erythematosus along with Rhuematoid Arthristis. I had to resign and now I'm disabled. I loved watercolor from the moment I was introduced to it in school. I always painted as a hobby, but now it has become my own therapy and I believe that this was the path I was given and actually feel blessed, bc if I didn't get sick, I wouldn't have become the artist I am today. Sorry for such a long, personal story but just wanted you to know how important your videos are to me. Also, when you say that they use lighter colors to draw, are they using water-soluble pencils? TY
No they are using standard wax based watercolor pencil. But again this is for the sketching part not on watercolor paper. I don't recommend that on your watercolor unless you are intentionally trying to do a multimedia piece. Colored pencil is permanent and not water-soluble.
G'day I use the ruling pen for putting on masking fluid, I think it's great for that. You could try it then show every one if you find it any good. Earl. Australia
Thank you; some of us don’t have steady hands this is very helpful

Robert Sloan Glad this was a help! :-)
Just learning watercolor and this is helpful. Love the last example using painters tape and being able to mix colors.

Sticking an eraser cut like a wedge under the ruler worked really well for me. Love your videos.
👍

Thanks for the encouragement.
I tape some coins under my ruler to raise the edge up... and I can rule with a ruling pen, quill/nib pens, or brush (I draw a lot with watercolour.)
Arielle Lavecchia Great suggestion!
Great video as always. Thank you for sharing.🤩🤩🙏🏼🙏🏼💜💜
I use a variety of nibs on my dip pen to get different lines and effects. I have 12 different nibs. I love your videos by the way.
Excellent how to, this one gave all kinds of ideas. Thank you so much.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Interesting! Hadnt thought to use straight lines in watercolor but now this gives me some inspiration. Thnx!
Can be helpful, I think, too with acrylic as far as the ruler and going along a lifted edge go. I will have to try this.

Wonderful, looking for straight edges to paint now! Happy Easter!

I'm Brazilian.
I'm not very good in English but I can understand your videos.
I love your videos! Thanks!!!

Robert Sloan Yeah thats should work. I have a matt cutter too. Not a logan but has the same lip.
Thank you! Good to know information!!
Perfect. Thank you.

Thanks for your videos they are helping me a great deal.

Thanks Steve
Thank you!
I have used varying sizes of calligraphy pens nibs, much like the quill pen demonstrated in the video.
That was really interesting. Thanks.
Thanks. Will use this for some windmill sails.

The Mind of Watercolor b
good tips, thanks.
I've seen some artists use the pen (2nd method) to apply making fluid to their watercolor!
Loved it!

Cool, I learned something : ) Thanks!
rachelsstudiodotcom You're welcome, thanks for watching!
Good!
Could you talk a bit about the type of tape you use? Artists tape is crazy expensive. Are you using just hardware store painter's tape?
Yes, I use both artists tape and painters tape. Painters tape is great for bordering off a painting.
Just started water coloring, oddly enough, never though of using a ruler to make straight lines :/ just tried doing them myself, hence why im here :P
What about how to draw/paint
a perfect circle? Can you do an episode on that
If you want a perfect circle use a compass.
The Mind of Watercolor Only problem some circles are less than 10 cm! So the compass doesn’t go that small!
You could also put a pencil under the ruler as well.
(Btw the link to the bridge didnt work for me)
Ok, thanks. I'll fix.
Hmmm, works for me. Here it is again. Try it here.

me Ideas !
Where were you during my high school mechanical drawing days, when I made a terrible mess using ruling pens. Oh, sorry, you probably weren't born yet.
